In this episode, we address “Back-End Configuration for One Off Corporate Rules“. Everyone who has ever deployed systems understands the need to properly configure the system to reflect today's corporate rules. Additionally, the system needs to be updated to be in compliance with new corporate rules. The real magic happens when these One Off requirements does not impact the vital user experience. Listen to the “How” on this episode of Stratum Radio!

00:07                                   Alright, welcome to Stratum radio. My name is Scott MacKenzie and we're continuing our series on last mile configuration of in-force EAM system and end user adoption. Very important. Last, uh, the last episode that we did was front end configuration. Now we're going to venture on into back in configuration of one off corporate business roles because you know they're one off a corporate business rule. So let's get going. This is featuring a gentleman by the name of Mike Snyder. He's with Stratum Consulting. He's a wealth

00:39                                    knowledge, incredible insight. You can't go wrong. Okay, we're going into the episode of backend configuration of one off corporate business rules. Now you know as well as I do if you've ever been a part of an implementation, there's always unique business rules that have to be captured within the system. Michael Schneider does an excellent job at explaining why that's important and how, you know, once again, it gets down to user adoption. If you don't get the user adoption, if you're not putting able to pull that information out of the system, then you know, it's just a, it's not a good, it's not a good situation to be in. So let's get going with the interview. Let's go get going with the, uh, the backend configuration, uh, podcast. So here is Michael Snyder.

01:28                                   Enjoy. All right, welcome back to Stratum radio. And you know as well as I do because you're listening to Stratum radio right now and you're listening to series that is specifically dedicated to the last mile configuration that supports end user adoption. Big title, very important. And once again, we have a gentleman by the name of Michael Snyder with Stratum Consulting and he's going to lay down some truth bombs here specifically to that topic. So let's last our last interview. We talked about that front end configuration, that creating that user experience, that usability and the importance of that and doing it and, and just grinding it out. And, and removing the, the, the inefficiencies and getting that system. So that me, let's say I'm an end user, I want to use that system. I want to, and I gain that information that it makes my job easier. And that's what we were talking about in the last episode. This episode, we're going to be talking a little bit about backend configurations for one off corporate business rules. Now, right off the bat, define that.

02:38                                    So, okay, so what is, what are the backend business rules? So when you're, um, putting information into the system, you may have some, a different data that needs to be validated based on what, how your business does a process. And whether I hit it with a mobile application or I hit it with the based application or a client server version of the application, I want to make sure that those business rules are enforced exactly the same way. So when I fill in a specific, uh, type, I want to make sure what the status is to go along with that type are I are identical so that they match so that the, uh, the data doesn't, uh, um, violate any of the business rules that we've implemented for our system. I know that sounds a little,

03:27                                    no, no, I, I you got to have business rules. I mean, you can't just have a wild West in your system. I mean it's like, yeah, I completed, got this status. It does. That doesn't work. That makes no sense. And once again, back to the original conversation we had about the usability, the front end, right, well it got to have it, these rules consistently applied throughout your system. How does a company insure these, these backend configuration of business rules are successful and apply and how do you manage that?

04:08                                    So, um, in four has, within its EAM product has the ability to put, um, essentially database triggers on the data in the system. So when you insert data, you update data or you delete data, it's going in force that um, the, the data is, is, is, is correct and proper and um, and, and meets the standards that your organization has asked you to, to implement. Um, you, you can't rely on the front end of you will do that because there's multiple front ends that are hitting the system. You can have data loads, you can have other sorts of things. But enforcing them in the back end through, uh, through the SQL database that sits there is, is very important. And, and what you get for one for an industry may be slightly different than what you have for a specific organization that's trying to implement their tier.

05:03                                    So their, uh, their relationship between their organizations and their divisions in their, and their, um, uh, crews that go out and do the actual work. If you don't have those rules built into the database so that the data's is, is, um, is correct and proper, you're going gonna Mmm. You're going to be violating some of the tenants of how you want to collect that data because you want your reports and your analysis and your and your statistics to be correct. If you, if you're allowing it to be, like you said, the wild wild West, then you know, you know, bad data in you get garbage reports out.

05:42                                    And, and I gotta be truthful. You listeners out there, I've got to be truthful with you. Uh, I've experienced the necessity to clean data and you don't want to do that. You wanted to find this up front. Trust me when you go through that, because if you've ever been a part of the cleaning of data, uh, you know that there are better things to do with your time except for, but you got clean the data if you're going to be doing it. And this is what Michael's saying is that let's get it upfront. Let's do it right upfront. Create those business news. Now, Michael, we talked about, you know, that user experience, what team comprises of this, you know, ability to be able to sort of that back in configuration, business rule approach. What does that look like? It's not me.

06:33                                    So it's the, um, it's the, uh, the project manager and the, and the analyst that's working with the viewer. Um, your business business specialists, the people who understand your business, you know, the, the folks that are going to actually be using the reports and the information that you have. You know, this is not necessarily the end user. These are the, uh, the, um, the decision makers within your organization. Those guys who need to be able to, uh, to, uh, um, show improvement in how they're managing their assets, making sure that the assets are being monitored, monitor on an appropriate basis, that they're being inspected correctly. That we're getting images or pictures of what's happening so that we can, uh, answer the regulatory requirements that come to you with your, say a pharmaceutical or a government agency or somebody like that or, or managing wastewater. If you don't get those, if you don't get the data in there correctly, then when you, when you report out to your regulators, you're going to have,

07:35                                    there's, there's, um, I would imagine a part of the ability to be able to ensure data integrity, data cleanliness. Uh, do you, do you also configure the system with these business rules to be able to auto-populate when applicable?

07:54                                    Oh, without a doubt. That's where the front end, uh, configurations that we talked about before. So those same business rules that you're putting in the backend, what we're going to simplify them a little bit and put them in the front end as well so that, uh, we're getting an immediate feedback when you're violating a business rule rather than waking to the back end. What's going to happen is you're going to get that feedback when you save the record because it's hidden the database. But when we deal with the front end, what we're going to do is as soon as you tap out of that field, we're going to run that same business rule validated and give an immediate response back to the user. So the same business rule, it just exists to different places within the system and they've got a,

08:33                                    yeah, so when I, uh, so when I draw the data from the database, right, and I'm, I'm, I'm pulling information that's relevant to my decision making process, whatever that interface looks like, how am I as an end user are assured that that data reflects it. Accurate information. How, how do, how do you do that?

09:01                                    Well, you've got to have done the work upfront to make sure that when that data got put in there, it was validated before it actually actually hits your system. If you don't validate it before it hits your system, then you're going to end up having, having garbage. And by being able to create additional fields on the screens, by being able to create additional columns in the database, by being able to create additional tables to be able to store some ancillary information and having actually a good sound data model, then you're going to be able to run reports that are good sales and realistic and inform EAM gives you that ability to be able to build extra columns into tables, build extra fields on the screens, be able to build those additional tables that you need. Um, all the things that you need to be able to create a, a, a correct and proper database. Third normal form if you want to get geeky.

10:00                                    Yeah, yeah, yeah. I like, I can understand database, but third normal form, well that went right over my bald head. But, but here's the funny thing. [inaudible] same discipline that you'll applied to define the business rules at the beginning of this implementation and through the implementation can be applied. Uh, when you're, you're looking at new business rules and that has to be applied because it's not a S business is not meant to be static. So I would imagine, correct me if I'm wrong, Michael, that there will be a necessity to sort of apply the same logic throughout you

10:45                                    the tenure. One of the things that, uh, that, um, stratum does is when we build these business rules, we build them in a very consistent way and we store them in a library. So if you're going to enforce this same similar pattern of a rule in one place in the application, you can use that same pattern over again when you apply a rule elsewhere within the application. So we build, we build on that capability. And when we, when we deliver the products to the customers, some of them, you know, will actually take the code that we built and extend it out themselves with a little bit of support, a little bit of training from, from stratum so that they can save them some of those consults.

11:25                                   Because listeners out there just recognize if you compromise that, that discipline, then all of a sudden, then you begin to impact in a negative way the database and the data in general and the integrity of the system. So it's imperative that, you know, once again, we're gonna, we're gonna wrap this up, reach out to the, the Michael Snyder of the world at stratum to ensure that that doesn't get compromised. It's not a big deal. I mean, come on. It's just, it's, it's professionalism in a system that you've got to be able to be able to pull that information out. So, okay, the first one, the first series that we did that, uh, that configuration, that front end configuration, we've talked about, the backend configuration, the data, and now we're going to, in the third of this series, quick and easy, easy integrations for saving time and data entry. Big. I like the flow. So stay tuned. So glad that you are here. Once again, this is the number one industrial podcast in the galaxy. No, in the universe. It's even bigger than the galaxy. So thank you very much for joining. We're going to be having a great, another great conversation just because we can, and once again, maybe one of these days, I'm looking out on the video and I'm gonna get some makeup so that I don't look like a full moon, but that's not not a big deal. So we're going to be talking to, here we go. Here we go. We're going to be talking again to a gentleman from [inaudible] for, his name is Ruben Ruben. Stan Stancel. That's right. Stancel. [01:16]                                    I was all tied up in knots about your last name and I can't even pronounce the first name, so pretty much I just butchered everything about you there, Ruben. That's a good start. That is. It's a write off into the gates, man. I'm going to happen and baby. Okay, Reuben, but listeners want to know and they do because in fact I'm receiving tech. No, I'm not receiving texts. I would like to say that I am receiving techs right now, but they want to know a little bit about your background, where you come from. Just bring out the human element in you. Ruben Stancel Stancel,

[01:46]                                    Stancel [inaudible]. No Stancel got it. Stancel. I got it. thanks Scott thanks for having me on. Take that Mark. I'm trying his name. You're not even trying anymore, are you? No, you don't. I mean I gave him the, the easy way out. I said, just say, stands on now, but he insisted, so here I am. So let's go. So we had a name like that, right. Uh, originally from Romania, right. Got Off the plane about, uh, 25 years ago. Right here in Atlanta. I actually was a summer day, uh, went to school over here in the United States. Um, and then, um, then started with data stream really to kind of bring it into the, uh, the industrial talk round. Um, uh, been with a company with a data stream for about 20 years subsequently being acquired by [inaudible]. And I could say that, you know, I, I've, I've grown up, I grew up in, in my professional career in the, uh, in the asset management space, uh, where a couple of hats, if you will, starting from a technical support services, implementation training, um, all the way into sales. And currently I, uh, my role is a director within the sales organization focusing on expanding and growing on our energy business. Uh, I have to ask the question, where did you go to school? So the name of the school is Bryan College and Dayton, Tennessee. Okay. Okay. And the funny thing on that is a, that's where I met my wife, right. So here's a Romanian kid going to school in the United States in Tennessee and guess who he meets?

[03:10]                                    A Russian. How'd you know? Yes, yes, yes. So, uh, yeah, that's kind of a funny story, but yes, that's right. Wow. And your degree is in what?

[03:22]                                    So I'm a double major in business admin and computer science.

[03:26]                                    Very good. That's the link to a data stream and 20 year career there and then into info. It's just a natural fit.

[03:34]                                    Yeah, it really was. It really was. Right. Yeah. I did take a business degree as a kid that grew up in the communist times of Romania and then opening up to the west. That is so cool. Um, you know, everybody was like, oh, business, business marketing, you know, we didn't have any of that. So obviously that was my first choice. But as I came over here and I kinda started learning how the real world works, you say, well, you've got to supplement that. Probably something more, more, more defined. And computer science was a natural fit back home in a, in high school you have majors. My Major was math, physics and uh, and uh, and anyway, that's, that's kind of the explanation on how those came together

[04:10]                                    now. That's cool. I mean that, that is, and then you just stayed over here and then here you are and you're having a grand old time here being at this beautiful location in, in for here, there's this, your, is this your office? I'm actually based out of Greenville, South Carolina. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah.

[04:25]                                    A lot of the folks that that became in for through the data stream acquisition are still, uh, based out of the Greenville Office. And we have a fairly large office over there. They still hoses

[04:35]                                    a lot of our development and, and support folks like it, like it a lot. So let's get a little bit, uh, now your role with in four is what outside of the sales marketing, expanding what, what, what does that mean?

[04:50]                                    So what we're doing right now, we are continuing our momentum of growth, uh, in, in the energy sector. And what do we mean by that? What do we define as energy here in for? Uh, it's, it's the utility space is the oil and gas and it's the mining

[05:02]                                    a utility like water, a power, that type of power gas,

[05:07]                                    transmission, distribution. Yep. And then in New Orleans gas sector, you know, uh, we serve as customers in the downstream, midstream, upstream, as well as some of the oil services organizations that provide support into those. Uh, those things.

[05:20]                                    For our listeners out there that need to understand a little bit about the difference between midstream, downstream, upstream, the, the, the VI, the what you're, you know, laying out. Can you explain a little bit about that? Sure. Just for the listeners, we, we, we work with our customers to optimize their processes starting from the exploration production, right? You're, you're, you're finding the resources you're extracting, uh, what does that defined as? Uh, it's, it's the downstream that's statutory. That's right. Uh,

[05:49]                                    and then you've got the mysteries that transportation, and then you're right back with the refining and the distribution or the finite product, right. And then the field services organization is those folks that provide support in each one of those sub industries, if you will. Yeah. In terms of, uh, optimizing the operations, some of what some of those, the majors or even some of those players in those sectors do not want to staff or build their own B use.

[06:13]                                    So That's interesting. So, so that's, that's a whole line, right? It's, you just got up mid down. All the, everything does, does inform, provide a seamless solution for that.

[06:26]                                    That's right. So we do okay. And that really is, uh, what we preach. We, we, we implement, right? And what I mean by that is build solutions, optimize for the industries that we serve. Uh, now, one, one natural fit with my background in asset management was that a lot of those sectors are heavy, heavy asset intensive industries. Uh, they have to want, they invest a lot of money into procuring, building or, or completing some of those major assets. And then they are, make gotta make sure that they optimize the use of the assets. Right? And each one of those sub sectors have their own tweaks. And, and, and, and, um, uh, they, they, they typically pay attention to, right? And yes, we do optimize our solutions and our approach, uh, to each and every one of them.

[07:12]                                    What happens in a, um, in a situation where you've got, uh, your, your downstream market is, is acme and then it goes into the midstream, which is a different company, which, and then it goes to the, the, uh, upstream, which is a different company. How do you create a seamless solution there?

[07:37]                                    So if, if those three components are controlled by a parent company, say one of the majors, right? Right. Again, absolutely optimize the entire chain, right?

[07:46]                                   Because you're at the corporate level. It's just an easier,

[07:49]                                    right? Now what happens if you're dealing with three entities, each one of those servicing each one of those aspects. Now obviously beneficial to us if they're using our platforms. However, in the interest of optimizing the use and a connectivity between within different application that those folks are using, we are building platforms that optimize the integration of our own solutions into a third party, let's say a financial analyst or human capital management solution or supply chain, whatever the customer has.

[08:17]                                    So you're creating sort of these API APIs, these ability to be able to sort of plug and play tasks. Right? That's right. Well that's good. That's good. And then, and then hit their tables correct. The whatever data that they're looking for. So that's new, right? Normally it would, it in the past it just, it would never happen.

[08:36]                                    That's right. Right. So it's quite, it's quite, uh, exciting really to kind of see the customer faces and, and that we talk in those industries when we actually present some of the alternatives to the status quo, if you will. And some, some of those things that we have done as a, as a software developer right. To, to, to answer the market requirements. And that's what I would tell them. I look to those who, the comedy that, hey, we didn't know you have it. Well, please challenge your vendors, right? Bring your vendors to the, make them part of the process

[09:07]                                    that the pushback I have is sometimes I don't even know what to ask. All I'm dealing with is the pain. And I have no idea that there's even a solution out there to make me feel better and sleep at night a little bit better. You've got to educate.

[09:21]                                    That's right. Because they don't even know. That's right. It's just like, okay, I got it here. I'm doing it to go. And that's on us. That's very much on us in terms of getting the word out there. Right. And being proactive, getting engaged with a, um, would many organizations, industry, organization, industry events, um, we actually have an event coming up this fall where we bring all of our customers in one spot and, and we, we basically showcase our vision for the future. What we've done, where we see the trends in the market, or how do we answer this, how do we align with our customers? So you're absolutely right now being that, uh, we are, uh, still somewhat that challenger, if you will end in, in some of those industries. Um, what I ask customers, like, look, bring us to the tables, let us have a sit in the conversation and you might be surprised, right?

[10:06]                                    Because we definitely bring a different perspective. And you know, I'm somewhat of an anomaly many when you think about it. I've been with the same company for about 20 years, but I'm here for a reason, right? Some of the things that, that, that our leadership has brought as we continued to build our organization, uh, in terms of servicing those industries that we play in are just phenomenal. And I see that in, in my day to day interaction with our customers, right? When, when they share with me some of their challenges, some of the frustrations that they have today, and we're actually able to actually partner with them and in the real sense of partnering, right? And the examples are out there. So,

[10:41]                                    so with that said, where do you today? I hear what you're saying. Uh, Ruben, you're, you're saying, hey, we've got, we've got the ability to be able to sort of streamline that whole flow, whatever that is, that we can streamline it through, uh, solutions that would make your life easier, don't get me wrong. And then you can extract the information that you need, the data that you want to hear or see and be able to do some really decent tactics. What's been a big, I mean, you can't ignore the fact that the energy, the oil and gas market in general from a macro point of view here in the United States, let's just say any, you know, globally, but in the United States is just exploding. Correct. How are you sort of, what does the future look like there? Yeah.

[11:30]                                    So, uh, yeah, absolutely. Right. So where we're seeing the trends that we're seeing in, in, in, in the, in the space is a lot of the companies are still on the, on, on, uh, on legacy systems. We're calling them that, right? And typically the status quo of those systems is, hey, you get a blank sheet of paper and then your write your story on it. You either do it with internal assets, external assets. There was a bunch of uh, uh, consultant outfits out there that can help you basically build it for you. Now the position that we're taking is, hey, let us be a part of that development of that solution. Let us at least configure, optimize the use of our solutions for your industry. Right? And that should speed up adoption and ultimately the ROI in ends, the ROI. Now,

[12:12]                                    sorry, go ahead. No, no, no. It's, it's an interest because you know, the market itself, that the oil and gas market is justice. It's going so fast. Do you, can you even get people to stop for a moment and think about the pain that they're dealing with? Or is it just like, okay, let's keep going, let's keep going, let's keep pushing, let's keep going. There's a con and then if it slows down we'll have a conversation or something like that.

[12:35]                                    Interesting point, right? Because when the price of oil is extra high, the money flows, right, the projects are going on right. There a be more fun. However, in the downturn is really when we see those companies reach out to us for help. And that's very interesting, right? Yeah. Um, yeah. So to the question is do they stop and think we're seeing more and more of that trend becoming prevalent, right? There are taking a look at SAS, the cloud, how can the cloud impact their operations? A lot of those folks have actually build without dropping names, it organizations that arrive with some of the largest software developers in the world, right? And then they are the point where they ask themselves, what business are we in? Right? Do I want to have 2000 it professionals on staff, right? They created custom software applications or, or do we go with somebody that can provide an off the shelf solution, right? With some of the features functions that we need, right? So to that point, we are seeing a lot of that right now, right? So you combine the cloud with a design build for your industries. And, and I believe that there's a tremendous momentum to open up the door and engage in those conference

[13:39]                                    because there's two components. If I went down, the first one that you discuss about are going to have a bunch of coders in here. We're going to create a custom solution. It's time and money and it's going to take forever. And then there's the, there's this, the, you know, functionality, user friendliness, all of the things that make a system successful is also compromised. So you're saying, hey, we can, we can address that time, we can address that money because it's still, if I can get it up and running, I can definitely save you time, money and effort. And then the usability of course. That's right. So that's an adoption issue too. I'm not, I've been in systems where it's like, Nah, I'm not going in there. I'll keep it on a piece of paper and I'll, uh, maybe I'll come back and I'll upload it some way, shape or form. You don't want that

[14:25]                                   and, and think about it. Look, I mean, what's, what's also very prevalent in the industries is the mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, stress, just by the nature of those activities taking place. There's a lot of systems that get ascent, assimilated into an organization or pushed outside of our organization. How do you mitigate that? You see customers that literally have hundreds if not thousands of applications that they have to maintain. And I think they rich in a point where even by virtue of the sheer volume of work and the impact that that has in terms of like is that a solution still supported was the road-map. It just becomes impossible to, to govern if you will. So, so you get into those situations and I'm telling you like more and more people are actually reaching out for help. At least engage in the conversation. Is there an alternative to what we call, I call the status quo. So yeah, it's, it's, it's pretty exciting.

[15:14]                                   So where do you see it going? Where's this future wizard's bright future taking us? So I'm fascinating and exciting right now. Kind of like a technique. Oh by the way, thank you very much. Here. Let me make sure he's got notes. So I want to make sure I spell my name right. It's not mc and it's MacKenzie mic. If you want to try to say it's MacKenzie, that's an a, there you go. And I tried, I tried. Now I feel better and I go, I'm going to sleep better at night. He, Reuben, no one that I've just, no, I am.

[15:48]                                   So here's where we are seeing, right? Leveraging, hey, making use of your data, right? How do you use the data to make decisions and can you capitalize on, on, on real life data, capture a analyzing of this data and then turn them into business decision that actually impact the bottom line, right? So how do you do that? Right? You need systems, you need solutions, right? Um, and that's, that's truly, I think what the future is going to look like. It's going to be heavily, uh, incorporating the principles of the IoT Internet of things, right? Every device, every equipment that you buy nowadays has a sensor or some sort of a tag that, that collects data and pushes it. Where does it push it? Right? The question goes and what do you do with it? Right? That's number one. Number two, uh, mobility, right? Um, if, uh, if you're like me, you know, I mean it's actually scared of the amount of time that we spend on those devices. I actually get a report per store to me every week on the, uh, the, the number of hours daily.

[16:45]                                    Uh, I stopped looking at that because I, first off, I there's nothing I can do about it. And secondly, I don't want to be embarrassed. So it's all about me Ruben.

[16:54]                                    So w yeah, but on that point, right, it's another concept, right? That um, uh, that we've actually coined a about six or seven years ago, I want to say work the way you live, right? So we are, it's a fact. We are spending our lives connected using those, those uh, those pocket miracles, right? Cause there are beautiful for you. They make our lives easier in our personal lives. Now, can you transform that into the business life? Can we build solutions that are truly our solutions that are intuitive, easy to use, that the folks like to use that are going to be part of their daily, uh, activities. And we believe we can, right? So implementing mobility and make it meaningful. Right? Um, and then another interesting concept, uh, following up on the IoT is can you bring your assets into the conversation? Right? Can you give your assets a voice? And I think that's very important. It's quite exciting, right? Because the data that they're pushing to you is their voice. Now are you listening and now you're taking action

[17:49]                                    and, and, but, but the, the, the next level of, of I guess thought here is like, yeah, I got all this data, but what does it mean? How do I, how do I w I mean, it's just, it's data. And unless you have some sort of meaning behind that data, it's just data that's just no rush.

[18:05]                                    So then the question becomes why do we have the right analytical tools? Do we have the right criteria? There were there were watching or paying attention to? Are you empowering your folks in the field to tell you, hey, this is what makes sense to me. Give me this data and if you can make it available, I can improve my day to day performers. I can improve your assets performance.

[18:29]                                    Yeah. See for me personally, I'm excited about the technology. It's just a neat thing because you got to do more with less. But then there's this abundance of information out there to make you even smarter, more intuitive and insightful into your org and make it just, it impacts your bottom line and in a very positive way. And then to your example of when the oil prices low, that's where they're trying to figure out greater ways of optimizing, greater ways of being able to extract value. And that's a technology solution, whether you like it or not, it's just, it's a beautiful, bright, wonderful, exciting time. I'm telling you that and I, so I'm going to summarize it real quick. Is that okay? Can I do that? He said yes. So here's the deal. Technology, whether you like it or not, whether you, you rail against it, whether you are fighting and you don't want to do it, it's going to be with you.

[19:32]                                   It is what it is you either begin to embrace it but you guys and and the people who develop technology or are in a position to be able to make it easier, more accessible and, and back back, way back, it was something like a, you know, you had to be a computer person to be able to even access that information, but now it's not the case. So that's real important stuff. And you guys are developing that platform. That's right. That's right. I just don't believe that that's the future. [00:21]                                    All right, let's go. Welcome to the industrial talk podcast. My name is Scott MacKenzie, so glad that you are here. You industrial juggernaut. You have joined the number one industrial podcast in the universe. I'm pretty confident about that as I look at the guest here and Martin. Anyway. Yeah, thank you very much. We're going to have another wonderful conversation with a gentleman by the name of Kevin Price. He is within forum. We're going to talk, we're going to, of course, we're going to talk about the future. We're going to talk about the past. We're going to talk about the solutions that in four camp provide and why he is such a spectacular resource, so hang on. It'll be a great conversation. All right, Kevin, it's all about you right now. 100% and now you're going to have to make me work for this because this is the Mike and you're about five feet away from it. No, I've got to work with professionals, Kevin, and we're going to have to work with that. I get it. So Kevin, now, how long have you been with [inaudible]? Tell us a little bit about your background, where you come from and why you're such an incredible professional.

[01:25]                                    Absolutely. So I started in the enterprise asset management space in 1997 so 22 years. Geez, that's uh Huh.

[01:34]                                    Hey, it wasn't a pretty system back then. Oh, of course. At least challenges to say it as best. Yeah. When I came into the market, we're

[01:41]                                    still actually working with DOS systems and there was a system out there that we had called maintenance pack running on Dawson. It was with data stream at the time and we started working with some Microsoft development funds and they said, man, it would be great if you took the application and put it into this thing that we have called windows 95 and 98 and would be wonderful for us to do that. So we did, we upgraded it from what we had in dos, we put it into windows environment and we were going to call it maintenance professional again. But we already did that. We needed a two somethings. So we shorten it down to two and launched that out a long time ago. And then more money came from Microsoft. We did some things on the active server pages that were popular at the time and did the thing.

[02:21]                                    I was mobile and just kept moving on and on and on and any brought it here pretty much 2006 when we were acquired by n four. So it was an interesting day. It was itchy from the standpoint of back then. Uh, we were in the process of doing things on the web because in 2001, we took our applications, we modernized them and then made them available on the web. So we were one of the first people to offer a multitenant SAS product at the time. And Oh, absolutely. It was wonderful because we were thinking this is going to be the wave of the future. This is an opportunity for us to be able to take it application, make it available in a subscription way so that we could take the onus off of somebody installing it locally. So we did that a while. We kept developing that and it was because of the architecture that really got us there. We decided to make a database, do what a database does and store information. We decided to take the presentation, do what presentation does, and just make it look good and integration and built out in a big way. And for lucky, for us, it really worked out. The architecture proved positive.

[03:17]                                    Well, I'm telling you, you are, you're ahead of your time because now that's what everybody talks about today. In a sense that SAS at that solution, that cloud, all of the steps associated with that and you guys were ahead of it,

[03:29]                                    you bet. But it was a bit of a gamble because at the time a lot of people were tarring their horse to different types of structure, different types of architecture. They were going against the oracle model or they go in against the Microsoft DNA model and all these other types of things. We just wanted a way that would make it available for many different platforms, meaning browsers, whether it's going to be chrome or internet explorer or safari or what have you. We didn't want to be tied to the front end and the back end. We wanted to scale in a big way. We want it to be our own. We wanted to though, important factors. We want it to be a product. We didn't want it to turn into a bunch of platform development pieces. So to do that we had, we had a modernize

[04:06]                                    like a just a cohesive product. It's like, yeah, or here it is. Not exactly, we didn't want to be similar. That was a project. We always call it our product versus project because we don't want you to have to be in a situation where we give you a code set right now. You gotta develop it on site and then you get to have certain types of resources available. We wanted it to be a cohesive set of product. And you know that, that, that, that mindset that what you just described is why people have a sour taste in their mouth. You Bet. When, when you go to a potential client, a prospect and say, hey, we've got a great solution for you. What is it? Oh, it's the, oh no, thank you. We went down that road a couple of times and, and uh, I've, I'm balled because of it, so I don't, I blame you. I'm ugly because of you and it's not, has, it has nothing to do with you. It's just that's the experience that people,

[04:53]                                    well, you bet. In the competitive space. It also meant that they would focus on certain areas of the product but not others. As an example, you'll find mobility was an external add on. It was an external thing for us, man, mobile is is who we are. When you go out in the field, you're doing work, you need something with you. If I can get that technician to actually record as they work instead of workforce and den record, I immediately say them between 45 and 50 minutes a day.

[05:17]                                    It it, it, it makes complete sense. There was no argument to say no. I'd like it the older other way because the, the technology, the ability, the hardware that is there ready to go and if I'm at the asset or whatever that thing is and I start got that done. Real time visibility into whatever you're looking at. Absolutely. Yeah.

[05:40]                                    Be able to do a lot of things. I mean just because it's a digital component now you have dropdown selection, you have radio button selection, you have complete audit trail support for it. Now. In the past, it used to be really seen as a big brother type of thing. We were doing an implementation long ago when we did mobility, we did it an old windows format, and we would document where that technician was because we would say, okay, it was done at this particular location. That means it was done here. Well over time, what we started noticing is that a lot of technicians were doing work at the same location every Thursday. And we're like, oh my God, why is that? Why are they doing it every Thursday? The reason why is because the guy that was there, he also had a kitchen. He had really good Chili.

[06:18]                                    So we had a bunch of technicians that were bushing in their time at that particular location. And then all of a sudden we found that out when we reported it and we let them know it was big brother and now all they're not going to touch this piece of equipment, not gonna touch this mobile device anymore. So in the past it used to be, it used to be seen as a game, as a tool or a big brother aspect to their lives and now it's expected, especially as you get people out of college and they're used to using

[06:43]                                    the solutions are ready. Yeah, and that, that, that ability to adopt quickly. You Bet. I mean, ed, let's say a few years ago, let's say five, 10 whatever years ago, it's that adoption it maybe the technology was pretty superior at the time. It's still, I don't want to go down that road. I don't want to do that.

[07:03]                                    It's tough to find trades that are coming out of school right now. It really is. It's a lot of industries, but the ones that are coming out, they're coming out with the expectation that I can do this and mobile already, that I can do this in a tablet already that I don't need to have to go back to another. The last thing you want to find out. It's coming out of school where you have all these advanced techniques and you come and a guy goes, yeah, I realized he'd been doing things on mobile. We get this green screen that I want you to be able to type everything in. It's just not gonna happen.

[07:26]                                    It isn't and it shouldn't because I don't think that, I mean, come on, if you have a green screen, I think there's other problems we've got to sort of address because that does it

[07:39]                                    thing of the past or, yeah. Yup. The other thing too, there's a focus on the past that we really didn't focus on, but we do now is usability. The idea of usability. To give you an idea, just on the mobile concept and usability, back in 2012 we were rolling out our first iPad application. Now we've done other ones before. We've done windows environments. We've done the big bricks that used to be used. We should call them a long time ago. Okay.

[08:00]                                    Didn't like, uh, was there, there was a PR Panasonic tough book. Tough book up. Oh yeah. Those. Those things were amazing at one. Those things are military grades here, brother. So what happened is this

[08:14]                                    is, we were going through it. We're like, we're going to make this, we're going to relaunch it. We're going to do a new code set. We're going to make it highly usable. I want to get it to the point where it's just like an ATM. I can be able to put my card in. I get them. I didn't have to be taught that. I can just pick it up. I want to do that with work management applications. So we rolled it out. You log in, it's the same login that you have when you log into the browser. You download your work for the day, you can update your activity, book your materials, do different things. This is going to be great. It's easy. So I was thinking, you know, my daughter right now is eight years old. I'm going to take it to her if she can use it.

[08:44]                                    If she can pick it up and use it and understand what I'm talking about, then I've won. Right. So I walked in, I saw I had to translate a little bit for the eight year old. I had to say, okay, let's just imagine that Mama's car breaks down. I have to go out and fix it. So I'm going to, I've walked her through it. I said, I'm going to open it up, opened up the work order. I went to the piece of equipment. I said I'm going to get a new tire. I'm going to put it in. And then when I got to the, to the, the comments, I'm going to write notes. I'm going to tell her what happened so that she can come back and see it. And then the first thing I started pulling up the keyboard started typing it in. The first thing she said was, Daddy, why you gotta type in your iPad?

[09:15]                                    I don't have to type my iPad. And I thought for a second, you're absolutely right. You shouldn't have to type it. You should speak to it and it should hear you and it should write down the words that you're saying. And at the time this was a thing that was just expected because she could do it in her application, and this is a thing. At the time though, it was a Siri control and you had to put the development framework and you had to roll it in. Right now these types of things are commonplace. You're right. I should be able to open up now. I can open up my phone, I can go to my work order, I'd go to my comments, I could tell you what's wrong with it and it just automatically types of donuts. It records it. So a lot of these feature functions that are just nuances that you're not expecting or demanding, they should be there.

[09:52]                                    They should be already there. You don't think about a lot of those things. When I log into the application, I should use my face. I should have face Id. I should be able to eventually get to the point where I can tip, pull my watch out, my apple watch and look at the piece of equipment, tell it what's wrong and it responds back to let me know what it does. We're getting there. That's the future. That's what we're trying to get you back to document and on paper, putting it into a mobile device, make it a to where it can transcribe to ultimately in the future these types of mobile solutions, we'll be capturing the condition of the data, but also prescribing to me what I should do. Tell me what actions I should take in detail because today you know, tomorrow we'll be able to do that.

[10:31]                                    Absolutely. There's no question. Absolutely not sitting there like in the past where change just sort of lumbered forward. You're right. Speed is just everything tight tied to get it to market in a jet second and you know that that's going to happen. It's going to come. So what we have to do now in the present is we have to modify the application to get prepared for that. So to do that we have to look at the asset registry in a different way. We have to look in condition monitoring in a different way, condition assessments in a different way because we have to get all those materials and those components in so that the processing of that data from a machine learning perspective can spit me back actions that I want to do. That makes sense because in a sense, you know when we start talking about machine learning, AI, whatever you want, it's just a defined parameter.

[11:15]                                    It is. And to get to that defined parameters you have to do the upfront you do, you know, Herculean lifting you do. But once that's done, Yup. That's when it becomes really simply in efforts or doing failure code analysis that have always been the principles of RCM that have always been the principles of asset performance. But thou are putting in a scenario where they can be automated. So in time I should be able to subscribe to a preventative maintenance measure that I inherited a system and then over time gathered the data so it can prescribe me what I should do. It should tell me how to do it. Just the same thing that happens with your printer at home. It gets a paper jam. It tells you which drawer to pull down. It tells you where to go. It tells you to pull it out.

[11:54]                                    It's still very hard, Kevin. I still, I mean you make it sound like it's a what Paducah did, but it's like I'll start to break out a sweat no matter how, how big that number is. Go there first. I know you'll start beating down the machine. Yeah. This happened to that same child that thought I should say

[12:11]                                    speaking to it now. She's excited that she can change it. It doesn't work. She gets pissed off and calls me, but I ended up fixing it. But these will still happen because you need, you need us gray hairs to help you out. Every known. Yeah,

[12:20]                                    that's right. You're listening to it on the podcast. It's don't ever forget about us pretty wise

[12:27]                                    and that, but at the same time that's, that's another problem to be another grain workforce that's out there. We got a lot of knowledge in the Noggin now. How do you take that out? How do you got there? There's framework. Well, I mean it's not as tough as you think. It's Herculean effort, I'll be it. But the ideas behind it is those workers, those condition monitoring, the gray hair is going to tell you when it, when it looks like this, it feels like this and it measures like this. This is what you do, that this, this, this, the right parameters. Those are things that I can pay attention to.

[12:53]                                    But you got to start doing that now because what happens, and I've been on a number of projects where, Hey Scott, ah, we got this big old tsunami of individuals that are getting ready to retire. What do you think we need to do? And it's like, you know, this is going to happen but you're not there yet.

[13:09]                                    No. What do we need a assist them to be able to support that. So we've done a lot is we've expanded in this asset performance management evolution that we're doing. We're expanding to condition assessment, collection process. So we have more checklists. We have more derivatives that come from checklists. We have a lot more failure detailed. I go through it, all those types of Datas that are in people's head, we want to be able to put it as much as we can to institutionalized in the system so that they can then pass that on to a more automated way. Now, what I've always viewed off, and I'll ask you this question because I'm curious to what you think, oh, let me start doing that. Do we actually dumb down the future mechanics?

[13:42]                                    Okay, so here's, here's my big beef. First off, you're trying to create a situation where you, in essence the organization is boring. And the reason you see that because it's your system, your, your, your technology will always tell you, yeah, you, it's getting ready to sorta have a problem going out there. Nothing fails the world today. Just FYI. People make a lot of money on catastrophic failures. Absolutely. And, and I want to come in and I'm riding my white horse and I'm going to be the hero of the day, man. But [inaudible] that's got to change. And that's, yeah. And even though you think you're dumbing down your, your, you're changing the focus today. Transfer of knowledge. It's all it is. I think so too. Yeah. I, I, it has to happen. You're not dumbing it down because you'll still have to have that innate ability to be able to understand what's going on. You still need to turn around and you still need to do some [inaudible]

[14:35]                                    gonna be out there. Um, I think I've told you the joke before, but the joke goes along where there was an actual, um, guy that had a ship that was at a dock and nobody would fix it. And you tried forever. Today, try to get all these people to come and look at it. No one would come fix it. Volleyed Code. You just listen. I've got a friend that knows how to do this. I know a guy. He's going to come up fix it. What's his name? His name's Jim. Jim comes out and he's old, backs up all bent over. He has a small tool bag. He lays it down and um, he, he reaches into his bag. He looks, he decides not to bring anything. He goes into the boat, he goes to the engine room, spends just about an hour looking around trying to inspect it, comes back out to the dock, opens up the bag, grabs the hammer, goes inside, takes a good look and smacks it on the side and then tells the guy to start it back up and to start it up and he said, I can't believe you just did that.

[15:18]                                    He said, we've had like 10 people come look at this boat. Nobody can get that done. He said, I'll send you a bill. Don't worry about it. You go on your trip, you come back. He said, okay. The guy came back, he saw a bill, it had two lines on it, it was $10,000 and he'd look at the lines and I had one line in there that was 50 bucks and that 50 bucks was for the Hammer. The rest was $9,950 for the knowledge of knowing where to hit it. Yeah, so being able to transfer that knowledge of that guy had is the most important thing. Now, how do you capture that? How do you bring it in? Just like you're saying, this can be a Herculean effort to do this, some of these things, but if you don't do that and prepare for the [inaudible] yeah, the technology will come. You've got it. That sounds like a uh, LSU type of guy wasn't a Clinton guy was [inaudible].

[15:57]                                    Oh, that's, that's, that's, that's funny. Oh, that's funny. My buddies is the voice of LSU, so we need to talk about that. I grew up with, his name is Christopher Blair. Yeah, we'll talk about that. Yeah, I like him already. A is a wonderful guy. It's a great organization. He came from Georgia Southern, no one over there. So they received them really well. Alright, good deal, Micah. Okay, so let's, let's shift gears a little bit and we've talked a little bit about the past president and where we're going in the future and, and how your organization is trying to recognize what the future is and then be able to build that in, into the, into your system slowly, slowly. I understand you gotta do it in a very methodical way. You can't just sort of, yeah, I'll pencil whip it and get it on out there.

[16:43]                                    So one of the biggest, what are your challenges? What are your, you know, things that are, it's like, okay if this, just, if we could deal with this man. Oh Man. So one of the difficulties we have, because we decided to be a product versus a project solution, it is making a one size fits all work. So if I were to go into the food and beverage industry and understand what those problems are and develop a judge for that industry, I would succeed really quickly. It wouldn't be that big of a deal. But we have that application in 16 languages, single and double bite. We have it around the world. It's hosted, it's locally installed, it's under different verticals. We have people that are using it for the large Hadron accelerator in Geneva. We have some people that are doing it for automotive. Very cool stuff.

[17:22]                                    Very cool. We have people that are using it to sweep the floors. We're having another. So we have to develop these as objects that work under any circumstance. So when you're doing the idea, we'll we want to gather data to understand it. How do we do that? Well, condition assessments and checklists and these types of tools that we have helped build that as a data source that they can be pushed forward. Now that'll work. And Duke University, that'll work concern. It's a challenge. It's a really difficult thing. If I, if I were to draw a picture just because I'm a visual guy, you've got this sort of, and we talked about this, this sort of generic backbone functionality. It is just, it's there and I can, I can move it around to different companies, but then I have these specific objects that object is, is focused in on that industry, that that's rich industrial, whatever, that, that industry capability and then it just clicks to, to a certain extent that generic framework does.

[18:21]                                    I mean, you can't, like, you can't expect, um, a linear asset needs that happened in a transit organization to be the same linear asset needs in a utility. You can't, you can't. So, but you can, you can be able to set a structure that can handle any, your asset management that, that then goes into the properties in the principles of transit and then apply those. But the difficulty comes into play where, what are those uniqueness, how much are they unique? Do I need to put him as part of my magic object model? Do I need to put it in extensible framework? And what partners do I need to look to? We, one of the, one of the God's sense that we have in our organization is we have tremendous partners. These partners are able to take our application and scale it in a huge way.

[18:58]                                    Um, one of our partners out there Stratum Consulting and they even took the application to be able to create a craft brew configuration. So it's amazing they can be able to take the application, configure it ahead of time to be able to do craft brewing, to be able to do processes for around craft viewing. And you would think that, you know, that can be applied elsewhere. But it really, it's, it's really unique to their organization that brings it out, but the uses our application, all the objects underneath it to get there. But see what, what I hear you saying, and correct me if I'm wrong, one of the big things that used to bother me is just time. Yup. And, and there's, there's time and complexity. What you're telling me is that there you, you sort of removed the, to a certain extent, complexity because you're, you're, you're married, you're, you're, you're diligent about that structure.

[19:43]                                    And then of course time, if I have an object that is dedicated in the case of Stratum Consulting, then my implementation time is reduced dramatically. That because I have this already, I plug it in here. Typically Click, click, go, and we call those implementation accelerators. As a general rule, that's exactly what it is. So if you take the application as is general sense, it's called the CloudSuite am enterprise edition and it's basic raw vanilla. But when you bring somebody into has that best practice expertise, they apply configuration on top of that. Yeah. It doesn't mean it's customized. It doesn't mean that won't be patched. It won't be upgraded, it won't be moved forward. But it means that all the nuances that they have experienced in their best practices as applied on top of that, and they can bring out their principles, they can bring even prepackaged computer based training ideas to be able to help you move quick. It can have prepackage prevented schedules that you may already know. It can have a lot of different types of details on the steps to be able to go through a preventive maintenance package. There's a lot of things that it can bring. I'll tell you one thing, uh, when I would implement these systems, right, I would one, it would be a minimum of 18 for whatever

[20:48]                                    reason, everybody talked about 18 months, but it would always go a little bit beyond that. La is always click, click, click dollars. Cha Ching, cha, Ching, Cha Ching. In that mindset, in that reality, what are we talking about now? Well, it's interesting because the conversation we just had with him before the stratum, they said their average is nine months, not 18 come on. Oh, it's amazing. It can be a lot faster too, depending on the industry of what you're trying to do. Because [inaudible] take it even a step further in saying that we have cloud suite for different industries that are already built. So klutzy facilities management, we already built it out to be able to do a lot of the Philips facilities functions to be able to do space movement, work, move, and to be able to do allocations, to see graphical imagery, to be able to do mobility.

[21:30]                                    We do a lot of that already for some of those two. And then they take it even further. See this is interesting. You listeners out there in industrial talk, what we're talking about is you've got this generic backbone, this, this framework. And then, and then if I have a, I don't care what it might be, I might be manufacturing widgets, uh, informed. I'd have an object that is specific to best practice in, and correct me if I'm wrong, manufacturing of widgets, we can pull it off the shelf and then stick it and collect it and then make some minor modifications because we're unique. Maybe. But it's not, you're not sitting there trying to recreate the wheel and it just keeps, it keeps grow and grow. Adding it allows me to do with its configuration sets on top of the application. It doesn't sit with an end or an end to it and restricting it.

[22:13]                                    So allows me to be able to apply patches about right. And then everything moves forward and that's why I mentioned the architecture. We spent an inordinate amount of time on the architecture and then you have to, we did all this work because we wanted the database and do what a database does. The presentation, your presentation does reporting and so on so that I can scale. See that's just spent, it's it. It's brilliant in its simplicity. We think, well I'll God being from the other side when I've, I've done this stuff either. I see the, the, the brilliance of it. I really do. So you, you are a rockstar man. I and, and we can, I mean we're just constantly, we can talk forever, but we don't have time. We really could. Well, we're not going to talk about LSU and Clemson though. We did have different opinions on that and from the crowd, we've got a very heavy heavy from the crowd. Yeah, they're a good team. Yeah. You guys are the national champions, right? You beat Alabama three times. Well, at least. What's that? Well, yeah, but we have to play Alabama every year. We only play them when it matters. That's it. Well, every time we play it matters and we, we fail miserably. Tiger, come on, we're tigers. We'll talk cabinets. You know, it's just a better color. Oh Man. That's called podcast trash talk

You know this is where the industrial professionals come to talk. We're going to have a great conversation because we're going to be talking to a gentleman by the name of Mark Ford and he's within four and we're going to be talking about the future. So stay tuned. [01:04]                                   And if you're out there on the video, if you're looking at it on the video, you can tell that I'm bald because the glare from the lights are just shining off my forehead and my forehead goes all the way back to my back of the neck. But it is it. I'm just not going to have that hairband. I'm just not going to have it just between you and me. It's just not gonna happen. So how are you doing? Well, thank you. We're here. We're here in Alpharetta right now in their beautiful corporate room because this is what podcasts could do. We can go pretty much anywhere and be able to do this with a level of confidence. That is a pretty surprising. And once again, I got you off on that one there, mark. Yeah, Dude. Yes. You're welcome. You're welcome. So anywhere, yeah, we're broadcasting from a in foreign Alpharetta and we're going to be talking right now in specifically, we're going to be talking about, uh, in [4:00] AM and the utility side. And that's what Ya, that's what you're all about. So for the listeners in the, uh, the industrial market industrial talk market, give us a little background on who you are and why you're so spectacular there.

[02:10]                                    Yeah. Well, uh, so I've been doing, you mentioned e a m or f for a long, long time, which is one of the things we're doing. I've been doing this for years and years. Uh, it's a, it's a great place to be just asset management across a variety of marketplaces. Right, right. So today, um, what's most exciting for us is the way that it's now making its way into a lot outside of just pure industrial places and more into utilities in oil and gas and some of the other, the other industries that have typically haven't done a lot in, just know how long you've been with the [inaudible] I've been within for almost eight years. Eight years. Yes. You're back. Oh, where'd you come from? I came from a company called Mincom. C. O. O. That's right. That's exactly right. That's an interest passport company. That's exactly, yes. Exactly. Very good. It's got a funny cause. A men calm, really stiff for mining for long, but really heavy

[03:00]                                    assets and all of that. Yeah. They branched into a lot of different things. Yeah. I think at that time when I was implementing the, uh, we tried to deploy it in a utility setting, but there was a, a, a, the way it was structured as a whole that the system as a whole, it was you, you really had to sort of boot shoehorn it on in some way, shape or form into a utility. They do, it does really well when you're talking about maybe generation and vertical assets. Yeah. Difficult. When you start talking about linear assets. Yes. And we were deploying it in a transmission environment, right? Yes. Yeah. Wow. Where were you when we were doing this? Because I'll tell you right now, that's when I had a lot of hair and after that deployment I just started to go home. Well, we weren't pricing had been deploying into that environment technically.

[03:47]                                    Right. And that's okay. But now, I mean, uh, systems in general, technology in general recognizes that you just, there's, there's a level of flexibility that's been brought in to just systems in general because all of a sudden in the case of that particular system, it just was hard. But now systems are far more flexible to be able to say, Oh yeah, yeah, we can do that. We've got a level of functionality that will suit and we can modify it. And we don't have to have really any, you know, absolutely. Well, the technology's come a long, long way. If you, if you think about a lends itself really these industries before you had to run truck, uh, big a bunch of the trucks and crews out into the field and it costs a lot of money. They take paper in and out. So now with the proliferation of the Internet and mobile devices, we're shoving all of that, that work right out into the field and bring that stuff to jail time.

[04:40]                                    Huge. And, and we were talking offline here and a, what always fascinates me is the, is technology. And it just seems like something took place. Some, somebody was sitting in a big conference room like this special conference room and said, you know what, what if we did it this way? And it was just like that. Things just started to change rapidly. Technology started to really begin to evolve. And it's whether you like it or not, listen out there you industrial professional, whether you like it or not, technology is your best friend. It might not look like your best friend. It is your best friend. And it's only gonna get easier, better, more user friendly. The adoption's coming along, plus the technology as to everyone's got an iPhone now, right? And before they were, they were not, it was flip phones or let me go put a quarter somewhere, fine, find a phone.

[05:29]                                    And so today people are much more comfortable with it. And it's really, and also the, the, the stability and reliability is another thing too. For years people tried to use some of these devices, you know, the old brick phone and some of the other stuff out in the field. And today it's reliable. You've got a network of Internet that allows you to upload and download and just kind of makes it practical. It always fascinates me today if you travel, if you go into a bunch of airports, you'll always see those, those special areas where there used to be phones and now there's nothing in your, it's sort of, it's a rough section of the town. When you go into those airports, it's like what was over there, Ben? We were back in that,

[06:10]                                    my kids back to my mother in laws and they had a phone sitting there all time. You looked at the wall. My kids are like, Whoa,

[06:17]                                    what is that? And then, and then you realize, wow, I'm old. That's right. I went back to visit my mom wouldn't it before she passed away. And uh, not to bring the conversation down. It's okay. But, uh, she still had the rotary phones. Exactly. That's what this one's like. What is this? What is this? Yeah, it hurts my fingers when I hit that little stop thing. So, so let's, let's dive in a little bit about what we're talking about here. And, uh, let's, we, we sorta talked a little bit about the past, but what, what was the problem in the past? And then we're going to talk a little bit about where it stands today, what we're doing today and what, what's really changing and where do you see this, this a technology juggernaut going? And then of course we're going to talk a little bit about challenges cause it's not all just, you know, you know, balloons and bubblegum.

[07:12]                                    Yeah. It's funny that you asked that way, right? Because I don't think what was the problem. I don't think they are, anyone saw that there was any problem, everything was just roll around fine. And they were doing this the way that they had done them. Right. Especially in all gas utility because you put everything in the right base and as long as you can justify the calls, you put it in there. That's changed a lot. And so and so as the market. So people are now demanding more real time information in any of these kinds of markets.

[07:39]                                    But what's driving that? What, what is the necessity? Because in the past for me to get, let's say financials, it wasn't uncommon for me to say, okay, 45 days later I'm finally getting in it. Oh my gosh, we've had a problem, but I have no time. What? Who there, there was a point when data was also all of a sudden we can get that data. We can get it now. We can make tactical decisions today.

[08:04]                                    I think that's, that's it. I mean in, in the world at large, everything's faster. It's faster, faster, faster. How do we, how do we get things? How do we get real time data? You know, half, half of the time you get data, if you, in the manner that you just spoke of, it's dated. It's not any good, right? It's real time. You've got to be actionable data, real time to be able to do these things and it's happening everywhere. It's then this is, these are markets that are laggards. If you really think about it and so

[08:30]                                    and, and like utilities, oil and gas, energy that, you know, the

[08:35]                                    big, big, big companies in those things. I think those guys put in, they spent billions of dollars on assets, so now they've got a legacy of, of investment that it's very hard to change once you get in place. So it's taken away.

[08:47]                                    Well that's true because it's all embedded. It's all there. It's all in rate case.

[08:53]                                    Especially in our country, in North America. Some of the evolving countries that have money that are building it, they're building brand new things. And you can see a Greenfield as opposed to, yeah, absolutely. You wouldn't build it the way we built it. If you're building it today, could use that. You'd use the technology available to you.

[09:08]                                    So what was driving so to, so today there is a huge push and a desire and a drive to get information so that I can, I can make decisions right now. Yup. And that, that's key. And how do you, how do you implement, how do you do that? What, what, what, what, what technology exists out there so that I can get that.

[09:29]                                    Well, we're finding everything, all the works being pushed to the field. So mobile is huge for us and all the technology that's available today, sending drones out to do inspections and kind of run up and down the pipelines and bring that data back real time. Taking pictures of inspections of, you know, big equipment that you couldn't do yet to send a guy up on a ladder to do different things. The technology is just, is now available and you, you didn't have it before I think.

[09:54]                                    And, and, and even the price point, they'll absolutely, I mean, it's not, it's not some sort of big old cap acts as you're saying, okay, we want to buy a drone and we want that drone to be able to go this distance and

[10:04]                                    isn't that amazing? So we do healthcare in a lot of different places for asset management and it used to be, I mean, in some places we've put tags and RFID devices on doctors and patients and equipment to make sure they're all in the right place. Uh, when it was a, the first time we did the pilot, it was a number of years back. It costs hundreds of thousands of dollars today. You can buy the chips to put on the follow any kind of an asset, you know, from, you know, from these big equipment to, to soup cans and food for pennies.

[10:36]                                    I bought two, I think two drones. I went to a local electronic store. I bought two drones. They were about the size of this and which if you're looking out on the video, I three inches maybe, and I spent a grand total of $20 per. Yeah. And they were fantastic. I mean, there's just, just this little dinky thing. It was, it was fantastic. And I, I all I could tell my son gets tired of me telling them, I said, can you believe what if this was a real life? Like a serious drone? What?

[11:09]                                    Yeah. Well, yeah. Well, and they take such great pictures of High Def, um, resolution that comes back directly to, you know, back to some central place for processing remedial, uh, immediately taken a look on the, on the computer. Yeah.

[11:21]                                    And the cameras that can be on the drones. They're not just, it's not just, oh now help me understand, so I've got a drone, I've got this, this line, this pipeline. It needs to be patrolled in the past because I did patrol work in the utility companies. You're, you're in a truck and you're just driving and you're looking up and you're going to, I guess that looks okay. You know the arms still up there. But in the, in that particular case you could take the drones and they have that level of ability to be able to say, okay, I'm looking at this asset and then I can, not just from a high depth point of view, but I'll also be able to change what I see to like a infrared or anything, lead signatures, any of that stuff. There's a lot of technology that's gone into it.

[12:04]                                    I maybe number one, if you think about the way you used to do in the truck, am I on the right place and it's dirt roads here and all that. So the GPS systems, as everyone knows, you can't hardly, you can't find a map. And any more today, everyone's using gps. People don't remember how they got places because they weren't paying attention. So today you can, you can get out and there's a lot of, you bring up pipelines. Pipelines are just in the middle of nowhere. No, really didn't know where when you did your inspection, was it exactly right or should have been a couple of miles or you know, feet that is correct. Interesting. Yeah. That's a that, yeah, you're right. I lived to that. So that, so that technology had been able to take either from a truck or a drone or whatever and know it precisely where it is on the, on the pipeline just makes it even more valuable as you do these guns.

[12:51]                                    Well, it also makes you real tactical in a sense. Like, okay, Hey, uh, out on this pipeline we've got a, a, a seal, whatever. It's that it's, it looks like it's a problem. And so, uh, let's get a crew out there. Take this, this seal. You're more effective in your, your, in your repair approach because you just, I saw it. It's right there. Grab this. You don't have to just sit there and I think there's a problem out there. Well then false problems too. Right? So, so you'd see something in the, in the system, which you can, you know, you've been able to tell for years and years and years, you send a drone out to see exactly what it is and then you know, which kind of crews to send out. And is it an, is it a break and someone done, you know, have I gotten right?

[13:29]                                    Right. It's just amazing the difference. Right. And I love the fact that it's, it's, I mean, it, it saves, it saves lives. It's a, it's, there's a safety component though. Absolutely. Because you're not caught off guard. You're not, there's not an environmental, it could be an environmental related, and this is a pipeline related, uh, you know, analogy. It could be an environmental related problem. And, and you prevent that from happening because you're saying up there, there it is. Well, we're using and geo-fencing and all of that to make sure I love the Geo fencing idea. Like we can get it, especially with this big equipment. Right? So we, we, we do offense to the point where if someone doesn't have the right credentials, they can. So cool. I can't get some of these bigger pieces of equipment running. See, that is so cool when you get right down to, that's pretty doggone cool stuff because, because being a, the guy that's been in many of, uh, uh, you know, environments, sometimes there are people in there that don't deserve to be in there. You know what I'm talking about val? Exactly. So it, uh, I like that. And so with that said, I mean, this is today, this is stuff that can be deployed. It is today. It's done. And, and, and how do you, how do you keep up with the, the evolution of it? Because it, it, it, it's always happening fast. It's its customers,

[14:52]                                    it's team, it's, it's, we have large teams that do this, but there's, our customers are kind of the ones that have always tried to drag us forward. Thankfully today we were able to move in a a lot with a lot more speed and quicker than we ever have before. You have to know, yes.

[15:06]                                    Did it or your, it would always fascinates me as is if you do not, especially in today. Back then the thought, the old, it moved slow, you know, that phone, that rotary phone at chest, it's been there in that operating room forever and it's just nothing changed. But today it's just like, hey, we just bought this drone today man. Oh Wow. You should've waited until tomorrow because they came out with, you know, version 27 and it's better, bigger for strong.

[15:34]                                    Well, and it's a challenge. It's a challenge. But we, you know, it takes a lot of work to do it. I, I can tell you a story about, I went with our SVP. We went out to, um, uh, a large customer that, uh, uses a truck in trucks. They, they monitor all their trucks in it and it's all about maintenance, having these big fleets of trucks out. And, and so we went down, they said we're had some problems with your mobile devices. They brought us, um, the bad conversation. I said, well, we'll come down and take a look and ride with the truck guy. So we did got him with the truck guys. We saw exactly how they did all the work. We came back and, and we turned a lot of customization and products around really fast. But by the time we got back there was a whole new set of them and this was within a couple of weeks.

[16:15]                                    It's just, see that's, that's key because I would imagine, and correct me if I'm wrong, because I'm, my wife is over here just by Roadie and she knows that I'm wrong quite frequently, but the, how do you deal with the pushback that I'm a company and you come to me and you say, Hey, we've got this, you know, splashy, fancy solution that will make your life easier, but it's going to take you x amount of months to be able to deploy. That to me, frustrates me. But you guys, you guys can deploy quickly.

[16:53]                                    We can, yeah. To me is, especially for asset management, it's interesting that you bring up that point. Cause we do in the past we haven't really, everyone stays around in the technology or they stay away from pilots and kind of those go, oh yeah. So we can have people up and running 20 minutes on systems that look like we're around these assets. Um, intensive industries because of the way that we do SAS and we're all on the cloud today. So we could, we could have you up in

[17:21]                                    when I want mine on premise, we can do, we can do on premise too, but you got to push back on that when please tell me you're pushing back on. Don't do on premise. Well a lot of people,

[17:31]                                    a lot of people still need to be able to do that sometimes. The still working through the capitol. Yeah.

[17:35]                                    Yeah. FDA type stuff. Yeah. But it's coming Betty. It's already here when the,

[17:42]                                    when the, when the federal government, the Department of Defense and folks like that, just SAS, then we're moving to SAS and local and counties and

[17:50]                                    it makes complete sense. So, so my old hat says, okay, I've got an on premise server and I've got my, my solution on that server. And then I, oh, I've got another upgrade here. Here comes the doggone disc and we're ready to just sorta upgrade it. And there it goes some time. But in a SAS environment, you don't even see that.

[18:10]                                    Right? You just notice that point is gone. You just notice that hey, this is works better than it did yesterday. Where did that come from? Like that. That's fantastic. Take a picture today.

[18:23]                                    You got it. Surprise all the time. I liked the surprise every morning. So where do you see this going? I mean, where do you, I mean this is God we, we've done things and the technology, I love it. It's just fast. Where do you see it going? Will it ever stop doing that Wog arrhythmic curb where it just seems like it's going faster and into the stratosphere?

[18:43]                                    Well, I see. It seems to me that it just continues to go. The more we learn, the more we find that we can use, use all of these pieces to do things. You know, your processes just better and better. Just make things easier and more efficient.

[18:56]                                    See, it's just got it's cool stuff, you know, that's cool stuff. But what are the problems? What are the challenges that you are seeing today? Just f

[19:07]                                    well, we're still, uh, to move people off. We're finding there's a lot of vendor, um, integrated systems that we've got, you know, we've got to think about as we roll them out. The biggest is problem is the problem that we've always had. And that's customer at, you know, adoption. How do you, how do you get them to embrace some change? Uh, thankfully we're getting some help because everyone now, as I mentioned earlier, you know, they're using mobile phones and everyone likes to be able to interact in that way and so, and, and people believe the Internet's fast enough cause again who can't live without the internet and connected to some of these, these other, um,

[19:40]                                    I am, I'm telling you right now the, it's funny because there is, uh, a group of people typically bald in old looking like me who are very reluctant and resistant to the, the, the digital world. But it's not going away. No, it's not. A technology is just going to, you just either you embrace it or you can fight it and lose. But I, I highly recommend that you embrace it.

[20:04]                                    Right. It's kind of funny. I get maybe you get the same thing. Yeah. Till I get my kids, they're upstairs going, sending me texts. I'm like, I don't do texts. Right. Or, or it's on the weekend and they're like, no dad, I'd facetime Joe like, Hey, my phone is on my nightstand instead of, you know, in my pocket. And then of course she texts like this. I don't even use two fingers. I just do. I learned you could talk into that thing. You got that right? Yeah. Yeah.

[20:34]                                    Ah, but it's so funny and, and you know, I, I think, uh, will eventually evolve into just people who are just down like this and hunched back over a period of time.

[20:44]                                    Well, even, even me, I get to the point I'm like, hey kids, that's kind of cool when they said drop a pin to where my location is or I, you know, to come pick them up or whatever I need to do. So, uh, it's a, are you even an old folks? Like, and I've concluded myself with you like us can learn to do this stuff cause it's becoming so easy and it's just a part of what's happening. All right.

[21:08]                                    Si. Si, Si. I hear the music. That's pretty cool, Huh? Yeah. That's how we just sort of segue into closing out this interview. I forgot to give you the heads up. Well there you go. God, I figured so there it is. It's like, oh gosh, I got to, I got to segue out, but I didn't tell him about the segue out, so he's just going to have to roll. Hey, surprise. [inaudible] well, thank you very much.
