Welcome to the industrial talk podcast with Scott Mackenzie. Scott is a passionate industry professional dedicated to transferring cutting edge industry focused innovations and trends while highlighting the men and women who keep the world moving. So put on your hard hat, grab your work boots, and let's go

00:22

Alright, welcome Bill to industrial talk a platform that is dedicated to industrial professionals all around the world like the one that's sitting right next to me, because he is bold. Yes. Brave. Yes, he dares greatly. He collaborates. He solves problems. He is a superhero in my mind about that. Thank you, sir. Great. Yeah, I'm still ready to go. And we're broadcasting here in Austin, Texas. Oh, geez, the organization. And again, they get people like Bassam here who really know what goes on and and they are truly passionate about solving. Many of the challenges businesses have today, putting it on paper making us to succeed. You're a hero. Bassam right there. Let's get cracking. Thank you. Yeah, look at you. This is good. This is good. You're my digital friend that I've never seen in person. You're right here in person. Yeah. All the way down from the Great Northwest. Yes. Yeah. It's good. You have a good conference. Yeah.

01:23

Yeah. It's it's good that I mean, it's good to come to these events and see what's what's the state of the art in terms of its

01:32

you know, it's not a comprehensive meeting. You guys meet?

01:35

Yeah. Yeah. Meet, discuss, brainstorm. Fight, debate debate.

01:40

God. I don't know how you guys. Do you go home. Just all worn out?

01:45

Yeah, yeah. But but by the end of the third day or fourth day, you just want

01:50

like, yeah, you're right. You're right. I don't even want to debate that point anymore. You're right. So for the listeners out there, Bassam give us a little background of who you are.

02:00

Yes. So my name is Bassam Zarkout. I'm the founder of a consulting practice called IGnPower. Focusing on digital transformation in IoT industry, digital twins, etc. I'm based in Ottawa, Canada, but I cover the North America as well

02:20

as cover more than that. Assam Yeah, everywhere, man. You're like the dude, the Oracle in digital transformation. You think through this stuff? Yeah, he's downplaying it, folks. Just FYI. You knows more. So you come here. And you recognize that you're, I mean, there's the buzzword. It's digital digital transformation. Everybody's saying and what you you actually go through the process? And you understand what that means?

02:49

Yeah. Well, digital transformation is not new, obviously, been doing digital transformation for several decades. What is new is that we're doing this now, around machines and physical assets. So we're transforming the physical world around us. And we're tying it to the digital world. And we're optimizing it and we're producing better things. And we are changing the value that we deliver to the marketplace through these machines.

03:19

Are we really doing that, let's say industry as a whole? Are we succeeding at that? Do you see a trend that is taking place and say, yep, we're getting it right now. Because there was a lot of people that weren't.

03:29

Yeah, I mean, obviously, this is a slow process. But you can see it around you Rolls Royce is selling propulsion as a service. And the foundation of that is digital transformation whereby the airline doesn't buy the jet engine, they buy propulsion as a service, when they use the engine, they pay for the usage of the engine. And Rolls Royce is responsible entirely for the maintenance upkeep and KPIs or the engine and so on. But General Electric is, is doing the same. So you can see you can see these things happening around you slowly, gradually, but surely, as well. Yeah. And

04:09

that case, case in point, I mean, Rolls Royce is pulling in data, they're, they're managing that asset in a big way. Yes. And we're very grateful for that.

04:19

Yes. And I was told that they are very frustrated, because they'd like and they can do a lot more. But they are limited by the number of sensors that can put inside the engine because of the heat hot conditions inside that engine. The materials to produce the sensors do not exist yet, because it's so hot inside the engine is it's a resource now. It's amazing. Somebody explained it to me, and it's fascinating. They would love to put the 10 times more sensors in the engine and produce so much better results but they can't simply because the material Bill does not exist to produce these sensors.

05:03

All right, there's a business opportunity for anybody out there, right there work with Rolls Royce, develop these sensors. And I guarantee I'll be asking for a loan. Yeah. All right, Bassam, you're here, you're having these conversations, you're debating these conversations around digital transformation. What are the challenges there?

05:21

Well, the challenges is that because you are transforming environments that cross the physical digital divide, you're now doing transformation. Imagine you're transforming, you're changing the jet engine while the plane is flying. So while the plane is flying with changing the jet engine, and that introduces all kinds of challenges, you can't stop operation, you can't. You can't stop complying with your obligations towards regulations, and so on and so forth. So you need to keep on taking care of all these things, while you're making these changes. And that is not simple.

06:01

Okay, I'm gonna have to wrap my head around now. Yeah. So you're saying, Okay, so here's, here's a plane. And we'll just keep on running. I'm using

06:08

that as an example. Nobody is going to change a jet engine

06:11

during flight. But I want to get the analogy there. Because I think that you're onto something here that it creates a a truly valuable word picture that, okay, you have this asset, it's critical. You can't stop it, you can't stop it. Yeah, thank goodness, and you're pulling in information and data off of that engine real time. And eventually, you're gonna you're gonna get information. So let's do some maintenance.

06:37

Yeah. So you know, what is the this is an analogy to a jet engine. But organizations are, are facing this. And there is another problem being created is that the volume of IoT data is going to be exploding. It's already exploding through the roof. And people keep telling us that data is the new oil data is the new oil. Well, that means data has value, what is the value of this IoT data? How do I preserve that value? How do I make sure I'm capturing the tangible and intangible value of that data? And so on, and so forth. So that's another challenge that organizations are facing as well.

07:19

It's a tsunami. It says, and maybe it was you, I don't know, it could have been you. But the amount of data that is just pulled off of a plane on a flight is massive, just on a flight.

07:34

Yes, the the, I saw a figure last last week, an organization called statistics, they, they estimate that the volume of IoT data in 2025 will be 79 zettabytes. And zettabyte is a million petabyte sheet. So massive amounts of data, some of it, you will not need to store it and maintain it, but some of it, you may need to keep it for a long time and manage it. And, and, and, and manage its lifecycle. Because it may be required for compliance, it may be required, because it has value, a future AI may be so much more powerful, you can extract the value from it and sell

08:21

it, see it, but you're bringing up a component. It's so we're still sort of at the beginning of this whole wonderful digital revolution, you know, as we continue on this journey, this train to success, and everybody's saying, yeah, there's, there's gold in that data. And so we're going to just continue to try to get more and more data. I mean, what is it mean? Is everybody going to be a server farm? Is this gonna mean everything? And we're where do we store it?

08:47

The problem is physical, the problem isn't only storing it, the problem is maintaining the context. For example, you have a pressure vessel, and there's a sensor that tells you the temperature is 100. Do you want to store 100? Or do you want to store it's 100 degrees from that sensor from that vessel at this time? So you need to store all kinds of information? And in case of accidents, the authorities will want to investigate? Did you do what you are supposed to do? How do you prove that you did what you were supposed to do? So this information has to be that has to be a strategy about IoT data, what you do with it, and this is not about the engineering team or the operational team, legal may be involved, compliance may be involved. Risk management, maybe all of these people may need to be involved and make some risk based decisions because you can never be perfect. And being perfect is extremely expensive.

09:46

So you're so you get this this, this data, it's just going to continue to grow if if I'm an organization that is committed to transforming digitalizing my business right? I'm going to want more money. just got one more. And there's gonna be a conversation around all that debt type of data like that we don't need that data. So let's get rid of that one. But we need this data and, and how humans can't make that. You can you can create parameters, whatever those that looks like, but I'm not sitting there going, good data, good data.

10:23

I mean, that question you ask is a conversation that can take several hours. But people have been dealing with that on the business side. So for the longest time, people have been dealing in corporations and large corporations have had specialized teams that look at the types of data they have. And they create policies about what you do with that data. Right, because they, they have teams who have analyzed the regulations, and they've analyzed the laws, and they've determined that in order to comply with the law, or, or in order to minimize the risk of noncompliance, speaking like a lawyer, now, you need to apply these policies, and they don't leave it up to the person in the field to make the final decision about what to do, that person in the field doesn't necessarily understand all the requirements. So all they have to do is comply with the law. So the same approach has to be taken for IoT data, because that information is at least as valuable as your business data produced by your back office systems. And, and, and that can be crucial in compliance situations in legal situations. Let me give you an example. You have to comply with data privacy, right. And you are required to delete certain data when you are no longer in need to keep them for data privacy purposes. Well, do you know where all the copies of these data are in your system? No, you do not. So how do you? How do you prove that you've deleted this data?

12:01

You tell me? Yeah. Because here's your profits. I have

12:04

heard of legal cases where you have a large law firms have technology practices that were days. And they have CTOs and technologists who are also lawyers. My brother in law is a lawyer, I can tell lawyer jokes. So lawyers who are technologists are the worst. They are not easy to deal with, but they fulfill a very important function. And these people sooner or later are going to be involved in major compliance and legal cases where IoT systems fail that somebody, God forbid, got hurt, and you need to be able to prove that you've done what you were supposed to do within reasonable efforts. When you had to do

12:55

the same, you're, it's like, Hey, I'm a manufacturer, hey, I got my manufacturer hat on. And I'm, I'm manufacturing these widgets, and you're coming to me and you saying, Hey, Scott, you need to digitalize this more, and whatever, it's like that, that'd be great. Pull the data off of there, pull the data off there, let's analyze it, and you're gonna make some great decisions. And you're gonna, you know, but I'm opening myself up for greater visibility and risk, and I better know what I'm doing, which then I've got another headache to deal with outside of manufacturing or finding my supply or whatever my fees?

13:30

Yes, yes. I was speaking with a gentleman yesterday that. Now in Europe, there will be a new law. Well, it's a law that exists, but it will be strengthened, whereby if you have a supply chain upstream and downstream, you are responsible for the behavior of your partners, and that supply chain is of EDI data. Oh, yes. Yes,

14:01

I'm never doing business again, I'm just going to stay that guy that

14:05

banks, banks have had to do that. For the longest time. If you go to the bank for the first time and you want to open your account, they will pull out a form and they asked you a lot of questions. And basically, they don't want you to be laundering money through your banking institutions, this is called KYC know your customer. So something similar is going to happen with in supply chains. In other words, if you have you operate a supply chain, you cannot accept anybody to become part of that ecosystem because you are responsible to make sure that they are compliant with their obligations. And I say doing

14:46

business all of a sudden with this conversation has gone through it well,

14:49

maybe initially, but eventually like, like, it settles down becomes part of doing business. It's part of the evolution because it was like that 20 years ago in banks.

15:03

Yeah, here you go. So what do we do? I mean, all of a sudden, you've, you've stated a fact, and it is a fact, don't get me wrong. Yeah, I know that data will continue to just continue to grow in and you got to do something with it. And you got to manage it, you got to know where it's at, you know, in when this archive, ID, whatever, you got things around that data. We're how we're still at the beginning of this.

15:30

Yeah, yeah. And the approach is to have a strategy about IoT data. And I'm not talking about the technical aspects of interoperability, all of that stuff is a given at this stage, you need to have a strategy about your IoT data in terms of what's the value? What do I need to keep? What do I get rid of? Where are all the copies? How long do I keep them, and so on, and so forth. Because like I was giving you yesterday, the example of I have a Fitbit. And it's been collecting data for the past five years about my running my walking, etc. And I look at my phone, I see all this historic, historical data, and it's fine. It's nice to look at, but it's technically useless at this stage. But I do not know, maybe a future AI will look at this data and give me some insight about my health, I don't know. So in the future, you may get more advanced analytics that if you point it to historical IoT data, it may give you a new a new insight that you could not get before. So all of these, you have to take them into concert. So

16:45

the moral of this conversation or this story is one, your organization you need to go down that you need to be in the digital game. It just, yeah, if you want to be competitive, you want to have value coming out of that business, even greater, whatever it is, wherever that you need to be in the game. Yeah, that's okay, too. I know that I need to trust somebody I need to figure out how to take and I need a Sherpa to help me along with that. Because I hear you I see it, but I need a Sherpa to help me along with it. And therefore organization, I need to collaborate with trusted Sherpas, right? Not just any Sherpa, a trusted Sherpa to be able to take me on that journey to make sure that I do it, right. And then of course, I need organizations like OMG. And I see all of these organizations that are built on smart people gathering together and collaborating and debating these, these very difficult.

17:43

Yeah, so I look at it. And in a sense, like, like a small commercial, I mean, this is what we do at IGnPower, which is promote ourselves as these Sherpas for organizations. Yeah, help them divide. devise these data strategies for corporations. And again, the problem gets more complex when you're doing digital transformation, because you're making changes and retrofitting, and making changes to the process making changes to your organization. And you want to make sure that things do not fall apart as you don't.

18:17

I'm just, I have this is it, I need to find somebody I trust, I need to know where to start. I don't even know where to start. Because I'm too busy doing all of this stuff over here with my business that's been in business for 20 years or whatever. And I do it this way. Yeah. And I'm dealing with my supply chain issues or whatever it might be. It's vital.

18:36

Yes, the the the silver lining in all of this is you is the head curled is that the regulating bodies. And again, this is not legal advice, but the regulating bodies and the legal bodies and so on, do not want to run organizations out of business, right? They want to make sure that people are doing the reasonable thing. And, and that what is reasonable will keep on evolving. So what was very difficult to do a year ago will become very easy to do next year because of new technologies, new solutions, new thinking, and so on and so forth.

19:16

We haven't even touched upon that. There's a velocity and things change. Yes, yes, tomorrow is going to change.

19:21

But they want to see that. You've analyzed what your requirements are, that you've attempted to write a policy, that you've published the policy and had it approved at the highest level board of directors sometimes that you've informed your stakeholders about the policy and that you have consistently enforced these policies.

19:49

I'm glad you're in it. That's just me.

19:53

Yeah. And again, we've been doing this on the business side for business information. This has been the norm for the past 15 years.

20:03

Yeah. I mean, I am I'm so glad that people are like, like you are, are helping sort of that trail I really am. And how do people get a hold of you there?

20:15

Well, IGnPower.com website. And there's a lot of information on that website and just send us an email and we'll get back to

20:25

Welcome to the industrial talk podcast with Scott Mackenzie. Scott is a passionate industry professional dedicated to transferring cutting edge industry focused innovations and trends while highlighting the men and women who would keep the world moving. So put on your hard hat, grab your murdy foods,

00:21

and let's go Alright, once again, thank you very much for joining industrial taka platform. This platform industrial talk platform is dedicated to industry heroes all around the world because you're a bold, brave, dare greatly collaborate, solve problems, making my life better and making a world a better place to live. Thank you. That's why we celebrate you. On this episode. We are talking LNG we are talking about development. We're talking about everything. Utilities, energy, you name it with Clair, Marcia. No, I know her as Clair Hebert. Marceaux was her last name. And she brings the lumber she has tremendous, tremendous experience. She's She's a firecracker. Let's get cracking. Yeah, Clair is wonderful. Now if you ever come down here to Southwest Louisiana, you'll notice that there's some LNG terminals. And if you've never seen an LNG terminal, put that on your bucket list because I gotta tell you, I remember the first time I saw an LNG terminal, I think I was fishing. And we were tootling around and about. And you realize the incredible engineering that went into building an LNG terminal, it's you can't stop staring at it. It is massive. And it is an amazing feat. And they are delivering and providing services that are just so needed specially in today's market. But Clair knows everything about it. She's from Southwest, Louisiana, she's been involved with a lot of the economic developments associated with LNG terminals, she's got a utility pedigree, second to none, she knows what's going on. She's an amazing professional, and definitely a paper and pencil conversation in a big way. Now, before we get into that conversation, I gotta put this, put this out there I will, or we will be on site at IMTS, which is the I want to say international manufacturing and technology show that is September 12, through the 17th McCormick Place Chicago, Illinois. And it is if you're in manufacturing, you need to be there. If you are interested in manufacturing solutions, and how to create a more resilient manufacturing, process business, whatever it might be, you need to be there. That is the I M T s conference, September 12, through 17 McCormick Place. And if you want to talk to me, if you're gonna say, Scott, I do but I want to make sure that I that I can connect with you. I'll be there be there on the floor. And we're going to be interviewing a lot of the great professionals that are impacting in a positive way. All of the stuff that's taking place in manufacturing. So put that on your calendar importante. All right. The other thing I want to just sort of point out so

03:27

Arduino ARDU i n o. R do we know they are a new, a new sponsor with industrial talk. So I'm out at their website. And one of the things that I'm always interested in is how do you bring this incredible digital transformation solution to small to mid sized businesses so that they can benefit from all of the wonderful things that are taking place within industrial in digital transformation. Arduino has the solution. And and there are they've been around for a long time they have tremendous street cred they've got an open source solution for you as a manufacturing you and industry if you need to end they've got the resource think at the bench to be able to help you determine and decide what is important to your organism to your line, whatever your organization so it's it's important because the reality is is that you need to be a part of this digital transformation journey and you need to find trusted individuals, trusted companies are doing you know that's a r d u i n o the website is a rduino.cc Find out more. I mean I'm out there on their website and I'm an every time I have a conversation with them. I just sort of route around their website. They've got everything, all the education that you need. Arduino big time. You eat them. All right, let's get on with conversation. Clair reached out, I worked with Clair in the past. And it was a great experience she is she has the finger on the pulse of everything that's sort of happening here and in Louisiana from a development perspective, and just tremendous pedigree when it comes to energy, utilities, and she knows exactly what's going on paper and pencil Most definitely. And reach out to her. I highly just just just gotta go. It'll be out on industrial talk, trust me. But you just got to go to her LinkedIn profile, reach out to her and and be a part of her network because she, she really does. She delivers value added value content, valued insights. And again, if we are about education, and collaborating and innovating, you need to constantly connect with people like Clair. All right, let's get on. Enjoy the conversation with Clair. Clair, welcome to industrial talk. Thank you for reconnecting with me. God, God, it was exciting listeners share this out of the blue. Clair just reached out. And like like it just a flood of history just sort of went right into my head, Clair, thank you for doing that.

06:20

Thank you for welcoming me. It was really good to reconnect with you. I appreciate it brought back some really good memories. Yeah.

06:27

Yeah. What was it was like LNG stuff. What was our What was our connection? I can't remember.

06:34

It was development of various project ideas in in Southwest Louisiana and part of the energy transition revolution, whatever you want to refer to it, as I'm happy to consider, but yeah, just working on projects and finding ways to amplify what was happening, and it's still happening.

06:53

And it's happening like crazy. Do you find and I'm sorry, for digressing, listeners, we're gonna get into the conversation, however. Is the capital available out there? I mean, is the money sort of flown down here in Louisiana, or

07:08

all signs point to yes, projects or projects are still under development. You know, we've got roughly 50 billion already in the ground projects that are exporting liquefied natural gas. Each day, it changes in terms of the United States producing or exporting more than equal to Australia, Qatar. And so it's a the charts fluctuate daily, but we're right up there. And that's being driven by that roughly 50 billion in liquefied natural gas export project development capital expenditure, then we're looking at another 40 billion plus in projects that are under development, they're waiting for their federal energy regulatory commission licenses, they're waiting for their final investment decisions to be made. You know, these are projects that are well years into development where there waterway suitability assessments are done there right of way for pipeline has been approved. These are projects that are 456 years into development that are waiting any day really,

08:11

this is all in the Kalka Shu parish area is that where all this money or

08:15

where so let's be clear, this is something that's really important to me. Cameron parish, Cameron, Cameron parish, which is the second largest parish in the state of Louisiana and land area, and has the second smallest population we're roughly 1300 square miles in Cameron parish. And I say we because that's where I was born and raised and live there now. Cameron parish is home to and for those who are geographically challenged or not familiar, if you imagine that Louisiana is shaped like a boot that one would wear on its foot in New Orleans is the toe. Cameron is the heel. Cameron is right up against Texas and the Gulf of Mexico, making it a very strategic location. It is immediately south of campus you perish. However, there aren't any exporters of liquefied natural gas in Kalka Shu. So they're all in Cameron that's shinier energy, their Sabine Pass facility, Cameron simper, Cameron LNG and hackberry and then venture global LNG with their Kalka shoe pass facility in Cameron. So that Kalkaji past refers to the maritime designation rather than it being anywhere but in Cameron parish. Yeah, so and then there are additional there are projects that are under development there. Delfin LNG which is proposing a floating liquefaction facility. expansion for Cameron LNG expansion for venture global LNG G to net zero Commonwealth LNG all of those projects are in development currently. All in camera, correct? Yeah.

09:54

Yeah. significant problem. And then from that humble location shed, how much of the LNG I mean, you spouted off some stats when we first started, but the majority of the exports come out of that area.

10:12

That's correct. Yeah, if you if you take a look online for to track, liquefied natural gas export, significant amount is coming, you know 78 million tons a year is coming right from Cameron parish to places around the world, the Asian market, the European market since the conflict in the Ukraine, we've seen another uptick in how much is leaving, neverminded what what's being used domestically coming from those facilities. What puts the United States of America in a position where we are strategically secure in terms of energy production. Camera perish is a major driver in in that happening. It's also home to one of the to one of the nation's two strategic petroleum reserves. Roughly 700,000 barrels of capacity are housed there. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve, Cameron Parrish has 78 miles of the Gulf of Mexico coastline, on the northern Gulf 44 miles of the Gulf intercostal waterway, the GI WW, roughly 33 miles of the Kalka ship channel, which is deep water. I mean, the reason why these projects are focusing on this area is because of immediate access to the Gulf of Mexico, deep water. But perhaps one of the densest natural gas pipeline networks, arguably, in North America, perhaps in the world, when you take a look at natural gas pipelines, from a national perspective, you can't even see the state of Louisiana southern part of Louisiana. It's it's a significant draw for projects that are looking to develop energy related projects. Also, our our community, not only in Cameron parish, but in Southwest Louisiana in the state of Louisiana, has a solid track record for supporting smart energy projects, projects that are considering their impact on the environment and the community as a whole. We've had tremendous opportunity to prove that we can be wise about our choices, that we participate in things like waterbay, waterway suitability assessments that the Coast Guard oversees for these projects. We want to be strategic partners, we want to actively engage. And so that's what you've seen with us

12:48

what and for a definition, what a smart energy projects giving.

12:53

Yeah, so I'm not using it as a in a Webster's Dictionary sort of way. I mean, choices being made about projects that include local vendors, suppliers, subcontractors, local government entities being making a choice to be inclusive, rather than exclusive. Create developing a project under some Vail being out and open, talking with locals from everything from site selection to. And I don't mean it in a smart growth type of way, although I welcome that. Not in a an industry sort of definition, simply doing the right thing is,

13:37

and I think that industry gets a bad rap, I think that it's just natural part of their culture to do the right thing, you're not going to get an industry that's going to go there and say, Alright, we're just gonna dig this whole thing up, and then it's gonna throw some garbage in there. And, and and everybody's gonna be just absolutely happy with that that's not the case. And I think that industry gets a bad rap. And you just sort of point that out. This, given the fact that, let's say, you've got about 90 billion and I keep looking at my notes, so don't don't be distracted, because I'm not as smart as Clair by any stretch of the imagination. So you got to run 90 billion is sort of floating it's going in that direction, Cameron parish, wherever it is on there, it requires a a significant community involvement, because many of these companies Yes, can't come rolling on in with their army of things. They got to they've got to work with the community. Can you sort of expand a little bit upon what that means?

14:32

So it means many things when a project that is a $33 billion project, or 15 billion or 10 billion or 4 billion begins to investigate how they become a part of the community. It starts with things like visiting with local permitting offices, understanding how much of a particular parish for our circumstances in Louisiana No, we don't have counties we have parishes. very rudimentary things that that, from an industrial perspective, like, what is the capacity of the municipal water system? How do I fully understand that? How do I integrate myself as a project into that system? How do I have conversations about where the these are? And I realize these are very what might seem like simplistic things in a very rural community with only two lane highways, how do I navigate 5600 people coming in to build my facility with school buses? On two lane roads with no shoulders? How do I begin to visit with the local sheriff's department to understand what some of their concerns might be this is, you know, as a community starts to have projects like this come in, it's the the spectrum is large. It's not just what is the global market for my product? And how do I get access to work? It's all those things. Certainly, it's so much it's drinking from a firehose, but if a project is going to position itself well, and Ally itself with the community, wherever it is in the world, there must be active, constant, consistent communication with that particular community where that project is actually locating and then expanding from there sometimes into other states, finding out what the issues that that community is facing, for example, in Cameron parish, it is hugely coastal protection and restoration. The projects that I mentioned, have all understood that for their longevity and project success, they must face the question and answer it honestly, about how they're protecting their site, their investment, their, you know, 33 billion, whatever it might be, how that you know, what risks, every you know, this every project is in constant risk assessment and risk management? Well, each community that a project goes into, there's a whole new set of risks, and becoming an integrated part of a community, in my estimation, is the single most effective way for a project to reduce their risks. That's the name of the game for me,

17:36

the fact that Cameron Parrish there was, there had to be that one company that was a trailblazer, they said, Ah, this area is great. It's it has good coastal access, it's got all of the little components. And now I got to go down that road and work with the community because I think that I want to invest down there. That was the real Trailblazer, subsequent projects, and the knowledge of the communities has been elevated, because now they know like, yeah, you just got a $33 billion, one down here, we understand your water challenges. We understand this and and and so it just becomes a little bit more efficient from from an from an investment and risk perspective, right?

18:19

Absolutely. So when so that trailblazer for us in camera Parrish was shinier energy with their Sabine Pass facility. And they are they're truly masters, they broke ground on an import facility. Back in the early 2000s. The market changed and they swiftly responded and became an exporter of liquefied natural gas. They are certainly a model, if you will, not only in our community in the state of Louisiana, and Texas, they their Corpus Christi facility in the entire Gulf region in the United States of America, they are setting the bar in so many ways and one of the things that they have gotten so right, is their community engagement, meaningful community engagement. So they have selected as part of their team people, you know, the cream of the crop in in our communities to represent them to do things like create leadership programs for our youth to help to stabilize what might be the the oldest brick structure in Southwest Louisiana the lighthouse that Sabine Pass, they're, they're actively engaging, they're they're pouring dollars into workforce development and progress programs at our regional university, a four year university into engineering programs into our technical community colleges. They there really is has not been a limit set on how well they're they're willing to engage with us. and be good scouts and leave the place they found better, far better than they found it. And that starts to extend Scott. So the, the extension of a project has such far reaching potential implications extends to the engineering procurement and construction contractors, it extends to the maintenance contractors, the opportunity for local vendors, suppliers and subcontractors is

20:31

so

20:33

large, it's almost can't be measured. But it goes into these kids that are in kindergarten now may be working on these facilities experience that may get them an opportunity to travel the world and work on other liquefied natural gas export facilities. But it doesn't stop it's opportunities for mom and pops who maybe thought they would never engage in that high level of industry, gas stations. It's just when when one stops to think about all of the opportunities, you know, I for when I start to wonder, are we really taking full advantage of all of those?

21:16

That's so interesting. Wow. Because I, I remember the opportunity, I had to go down there to look at one of those LNG terminals, they are you can't keep your eyes off of that they're massive. And I think the story that has to be told it is the reality that shinier, and the positive impact from K all the way up into whatever is having and let me ask you this one question. A granted, I've been down there. And these terminals just don't build themselves. So there is a lot of stress and strain on the infrastructure. How does how does it project deal with that? And how does a community deal with that? I mean,

22:03

by by working together by, by honestly and truthfully communicating with one another, with on both ends, what are our shortcomings and perhaps how can we overcome them together, whether it's transportation, infrastructure, whether it's locating the sites that will help to support these projects, for lay down for parking, for access to food services, look, we are density is so low in Cameron parish, it might be five to six people per square mile. We before Hurricane just to give listeners an idea of where we, where our population was and where it is now. So prior to Hurricane Rita, which made landfall about five weeks after Katrina, in 2005, our population was somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000 people in a roughly 1300 square mile area. Fast forward to before Hurricane Laura, which is August 27, of 2020. It was a near Category Five tropical system that made landfall six weeks before Hurricane Delta, about 12 miles away. We've been hit pretty severely in recent times. So our population in August of 2020, was roughly 7000 people. So we had gone from 10 to seven. And then hurricane Laura knocked us down again, we're roughly 5000 People parish wide. One of these projects at its peak, had 12,000 construction workers in our community every day. Now that was a peak that wasn't the entirety of, obviously, but I say this to let you know that our population about that time was 7012 1000. Construction workers were with us daily. So how does one feed 12,000 people? How does one ensure that all 12,000 of those people have the various personal protective equipment needs that they have? What if someone's hardhat gets cracked? Who is onboarding those people? This becomes a significant strain, not just on, you know, the the 60 or so large buses that are coming in to take those vehicles off the road, but also the vehicles, where do they park? How does water get to them to ensure that they're not facing any issues with heat and hydration? It goes, Do you see how it begins to be an an eye? I fully recognize that this is not just these are not just questions that an isolated esoteric, extremely rural place must face this is Where every project like this is import facilities as well. So it's, um, if if these projects are not having regular conversation with the economic development, community development, local government leaders to understand, but this is how much water capacity we have, you know, these are these are arid This is a 100% unincorporated place. So there are no municipal boundaries. We do have municipal water there we have a mix of Entergy utility service and a rural cooperative. What are their capacities? Are these projects do not all generate their own power?

25:50

agreements have been negotiated? That's one thing. Let's just take that example, Scott. Power Generation. Yeah, so these projects are created to provide liquefied natural gas to various countries around the world. And they require power, it may seem like a very simple concept, but they require power construction power, they require power for their administrative facilities, and Nevermind the load that they require to generate the liquefied natural gas that's going to travel the world and provide the energy to other people. So it's this constant? Are we in balance? Are we imbalanced from the local community and what we can provide or not provide? Yeah, so it's, it's so many components, it's workforce development, it's identifying people within a community who may have some traditional oil and gas industry experience that could be their their experience, their knowledge and skills and abilities could be amplified or tweaked to work right there. Instead of finding people from around the world, how about we find people identify people who are qualified or almost qualified talent? And if they're not qualified, what do we do to create an opportunity for them to become qualified? Yeah. And that applies to individuals that applies to local vendors, suppliers and subcontractors. It's um, it's a very all encompassing, it can be if projects are willing to integrate into the community and allow the community to do what it can to solve some of those problems.

27:38

I think you bring up a really good point, it's not just the impact to Cameron Parish, and how you, you know, develop a project in that area, you can pull back and say, here's a model, this model can be applied to other areas around the country who are thinking about investing in and being able to this is a successful model. And I agree with you 100%. I think that there's no way you're going to be able to invest 33 billion or 10 billion or 5 billion or 8 billion, whatever it might be, without getting that community, the local community involved. And yes, where? Where's the roadblocks? What, what, what are the challenges because I'm all in I feel like, I'm just like, Yeah, I'm gonna carry the flag. I'm ready to roll. You've done a great job at that. But there's got to be roadblocks can't just all be pink elephant and bubblegum.

28:35

Yeah, not pink elephants and bubblegum, although I do like those things. So he made reference to an elephant. One of my mentors would remind me that the way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. And what I would say in response to that is first thank you for those kind words. But anybody who works in the arena of trying to make what's going on with these projects, the best that it can possibly be to, to really take a look at this and extract the best practices so that others can learn from us. It's it's not easy. It's not bubblegum, it is. It takes a commitment. First to the community, the people who live there. It takes a willingness to, despite sometimes there being friction or frustration or a roadblock, as you mentioned, the willingness to work together to find ways that we can agree on things. And I operate and perhaps too, Pollyanna, but I operate with the notion that everybody is my friend until they show me a reason that they're not. And I think if we we approach these kinds of complex circumstances with the outlook that things are going to be better than they are right now today. And things might be really difficult as we navigate through the construction of, say, a 1000 acre site with 1000s of people who are not from that particular community. You know, they that's, I think it all goes back to open communication. Yeah, and inviting one another to be at the other's table. So when a project comes into a community, like the one we're talking about, and, and all of these projects, it's not just one project. You know, success breeds success. So these projects are just their nature, attracting the attention of others. And so there's going to be even more activity. So just as an example, our commercial fisheries industry in Cameron parish, at one point, we led North America in the amount of landings for not only fish and saltwater fish, that's consumed by others around the world, we lead the the Pogi production, which is an oily fish that's used in things like mascara and lotions, and is still one of the largest catches in the Gulf of Mexico is off the Cameron coast. There needs to be a conversation and there is in many ways, with those commercial fishermen, with the people who are catching oysters that are going around our country that are that are feeding people, you know, what, what will they tolerate? They were there before. How does that that sometimes is a conversation that gets lost. And my role in the past has been to bring people to the table to have the conversation. Yeah, the parties may not agree. But they're operating in the same space, and the opportunity. So that place happens to be a place where traditional oil and gas had shingles from every major in the world at some point. So we are familiar with the intersection of industry and the environment, being an opportunity for people to make a living. And that's the thing we got to keep focusing on.

32:35

See. And I what's interesting. Speaking of fishing, I remember going and chartering a boat out of hackberry. What do you brought up? Oh, yeah, absolutely chartered a boat. Yeah, absolutely.

32:47

And what was that experience? Like?

32:49

Excellent, was excellent. Like, come on, you got you got to do that. It right

32:55

there in the midst of that development is the point I'm getting at is those things can work simultaneously, for the benefit of all parties involved. And I just refuse to believe that can't

33:13

spot on. And I think that what you're doing is is really important, I think that the model that you've laid out, can be applied pretty much anywhere. And I don't and I don't think I think you quoted was saying everything is local for projects. It is. And if and with all of the moving pieces and parts and not getting people at the table and miscommunication. That's a risk. So just do it upfront and and have everybody rowing in the same direction and the success. We have to wrap up now. Yes. How does somebody get a hold of you?

33:46

So, yeah, LinkedIn is probably easiest. If someone simply sends me a message I'm happy to as quickly as possible reach back out. Happy to have the conversation and and be useful. I think that's what Yeah, everyone I've encountered, right? Just useful. Yeah.

Find out more, again, you will not be disappointed, you're just going to be happy on this episode of Industrial Talk live. Ann Duncan is in the hot seat. She is the Chief Information Officer at the US Department of Energy, and also the Digital Transformation Lead. And we're going to be talking about utility, digital transformation that market, it's an incredible conversation that you need to be aware of also events that I will be broadcasting on site. So put those on your calendars, we're going to be talking about those, and how to get involved with this ever expanding ecosystem called Industrial Talk. Let's get cracking.

01:56

Hey there and thank you very much for joining Industrial Talk the ever-expanding industrial ecosystem of leaders and problem solvers, making our lives better, you need to be a part of the Industrial Talk ecosystem. It's fun because you know why we are dedicated to education? Yes, check. We are also dedicated to collaborating because we don't have all the answers, you don't have all the answers, but you need to collaborate with trusted professionals. And finally, innovate, we also have to innovate, we also have to continue to push that envelope and digital transformation is definitely a conversation that is always being discussed on Industrial Talk. So get involved. All right, we've got a couple of things that I want to make sure that we get out. First one, I talked about some events that if you want to be if you have a desire to be interviewed on Industrial Talk, we have a great time, we're going to be at a couple of events. And if they're on your calendar, that's great. If they're not put them on your calendar, the first one that I want to be able to put on your calendar that we're going to be at is at MWC. That's M WC. And it is September 28, through the 30th. And if you have any, if you're gonna go there, and you're gonna see me, let's coordinate and let's schedule a time for us to have a conversation on site. It's a lot of fun. The other one that we're going to be at is IMTS at a September 12, through the 17th. Again, if you're going to be there, look up Industrial Talk, let's get you on the calendar, and let's get a conversation rolling. The next one that I want to make sure that you have out there, this is pretty cool. This one is the 13th American manufacturing strategy Summit. It is also October 11 through the 12th. And it is in Houston, Texas. Look at it go out to it, and you're gonna have all the information out on Industrial Talks, all the links are out there. But consider because we got to be about the collaboration, we've got to be about that education, bringing it all together. These are great venues to be able to do it. And finally, we're gonna do it again. We're going to be at IoT solutions World Congress, Barcelona is the town it is I'm telling you had a great time this last go around. And in fact, I was going to have a conversation with and Duncan who is going to be on this particular interview. And I had some technical issues but the IoT solutions World Congress, Barcelona January 31 through February 2. If you find yourself there, you got to look me up because we have such a fabulous time. And uh, speaking of that, if you have a desire to be on the podcast, or be a part of this ecosystem, just go out to Industrial Talk.com Find out more easy peasy. You'll talk to me and Industrial Talk is a platform that is truly dedicated to the education within the industrial area. The collaboration bringing professionals together who have answers and who are looking for answers. And of course innovation because that's what we're all talking about. All right on to the conversation. And Duncan, once again, I was going to speak with her at the IoT solutions World Congress this past year. And unfortunately, I had technical question, but our difficulties, but she's been very good. And one of the things that I find so amazing, so interesting, is digital transformation within the utility, market space, the energy and how that has happened distributive energy, what are we doing, being an old utility guy, I sort of look at it a certain way, these companies, and Duncan and team at the Department of Energy, they look at it, and they're working with other companies that are trying to help transition into this, whatever this future looks like. It's bright, but it's got a lot of unique challenges that smart people are really focused in on. So this is a great conversation. So this is a note and, and paper note up. Conversation. Alright, let's get cracking. And welcome to Industrial Talk. Thank you very much for finding time in your busy schedule. Because listeners, I had a technical issues when we were at IoT solutions World Congress, it was embarrassing. But Anne was so gracious and made me feel okay about it. And thank you, man.

06:26

Thanks, Scott, it's great to finally get a chance to talk.

06:29

Yeah, I'm pretty. I'm pretty geeked out about this whole conversation around industrial IoT, and then some and digitization and digital transformation and everything in between. It's an exciting time, specifically within industry. It's exciting, and a little nerve wracking, because I don't know, I need people to help me understand the journey. But that's where you come in, and all that good stuff. Before we get into the conversation, I think we need to level set a little bit about who and is for the listeners. So give us a little background. And

07:02

so Scott, thanks for having me again. So I am the Chief Information Officer, that part of energy, previously was the Chief Information Officer for EPA, during the Obama administration, left with Santa Clara County was CIO there, and went to Dell, and then was invited to by the transition team to work really hard for free for a while. And after that, I went back to administration, because I was actually having a lot of fun, working really hard for free. So I decided to come back and get paid a little bit to do the work. Well, I

07:39

liked that. And I guarantee that she's got her fingers on the pulse of technology and innovation that has taken place, specifically around energy, which is really important. And I don't think and this is my point of view, I think me as a consumer of power energy. I take it for granted that I flip on my light switch. And there it is, man. And I'm pretty. I'm pretty binary. It doesn't work. It works. And and that's sort of it, but we're venturing into an interesting world, I still think we're at the tip of the iceberg. You are speaking at the industrial Internet, no IoT solutions. To many of those buzzwords rolling around IoT solutions, World Congress, Barcelona, that's where we met. And you were a keynote speaker. What was that topic?

08:29

So Scott, I'm gonna read the topic because it's a little because it's lengthy. So the topic was leveraging innovative technologies that doe to drive energy transition, security, and research goals.

08:42

So why what? What were the salient points of that conversation? Because you pop up I, I know that when I have conversations, it's all great digital transformation is great. from an energy perspective, it's completely different than manufacturing. And, and one of the points of course, she brought up security, cyber, all of that stuff. Why was that topic important for DOD?

09:08

Yeah, so So let me give you a little background, do we I told you who I am, we say DoD is because a lot of people don't realize it. So DOE has a bunch of missions, but I'm going to sort of tell you the three major areas I would describe them up number one is nuclear Non Proliferation and security. So we do everything in the nuclear space from you know, the all the the international work to the cleanup of the Manhattan Project to making the actual propulsion for nuclear submarines and managing our weapons stockpile. So we do all that. Secondly,

09:51

that's number one. My ears bleeding and my nose is bleeding to Holy cow. Okay, go to number two better not just pointless.

10:01

Number two is I hope this doesn't disappoint. This is the one that you think of probably a lot is the grid and power. So we we sell bulk power that is generated by other parts of the government to take the companies that then sell you power. So we, you know, we manage a lot of the hydroelectric dams on the west coast, but also power over most of the country, a lot of that power actually goes through and is sold by DOD into the bulk power market. And we also manage the grid, we ensure that most of the grid in the country, the part that's interconnected, most of that is under our authority to make sure it's actually up and running. So that's number two, kind of an important thing.

10:45

Holy moly.

10:47

And then number three is that DOD is basically the engine for innovation in this country. From a technology standpoint, we run 70 national labs that do everything from classified research, supporting our nuclear energy program, to open science working with scientists around the world. So we work on big problems, you know, like a Stanford Linear Accelerator is part of DOD, the NIF, which if you heard about the project at Lawrence Livermore, that just managed to create a small fusion reaction, right? That was a DOD lab. So we do all that stuff. We do work in 5g, we do work in, in cyber defense, pretty much if there's an area of technology that people are working on, it's probably happening at DOD, and a lot of the research that's done for other parts of the government, like you hear DoD doing research, a lot of times they're doing the DoD labs. So we run the vast majority of the science research, basic science and engineering research that happens in this country.

11:49

Quite speechless, which is really unusual for me, because that is an absolutely spectacular summary of DOE that I did not know. And I guarantee, you know, clearly, all I was listening, number two, great and power, both power and all that stuff. So do we, outside of hydro owns other assets, generation assets that they will and or how does that work?

12:20

So most of this generation, generation assets are run by somebody else in the in the, in the government, and then we sell the power. So, but there are some of them, where we actually own the assets, but but it's primarily hydroelectric. But there's also other types of energy being generated, you know, throughout the network that we then turn around and sell for, for the government.

12:42

I'm not going to venture into number one, because I'd be woefully woefully inadequate. And I would be asking stupid questions, I will venture into number two and number three, when we start talking about innovation, when we start talking about digital transformation, and of course, many of the conferences that we go to, that's really it, how do we leverage innovation, technology, this digital world that we're venturing into to optimize our manufacturing process, our grid, which, quite frankly, and I don't know, I'm sort of old school when it comes to grid, where we got power transmission substations, and it's pretty linear. And here we are talking about, you know, distributed energy distributed side of the meter. And for me, it's like, okay, well, that's a, it's gonna happen, but I don't know, how do you work in concert with a private industry to say, okay, hey, we need, it's got to be collaborative, you can't just be doing this in a vacuum.

13:51

Right? So one of these jobs is private sector energy security. So I actually, and it's a broken up role. So my role I'm responsible for energy sector security, for the stuff that doe owns, that the government owns. There's my avid counterpart, who's responsible for security for private sector power. So they work with the private sector to ensure that they have secured their, their their assets and that they are able to securely generate power as well. So, you know, in terms of, but But certainly, we all work together in terms of trying to find the best technologies and solutions and ensure data and make the grid more effective and more secure. But it's still we together works with our stuff, and the private sector to ensure that we have a seamless power grid and its power. So we measure electricity, we also are the sector, sector, specific agency for gas as well. So we run Another thing we do is we run the Strategic Petroleum Reserve, as well responsible for, you know, oil and gas, from a security standpoint and from supporting the sector. And then you know, there are other sectors, EPA is, for example, is responsible for water. But obviously, you know, being responsible for electricity, oil and gas is a pretty substantial amount of responsibility for doe.

15:23

See, I don't know how Yeah, this is like grabbing a tiger by the tail, because there's so much change that's taking place, I would imagine. I would even say just, let's say 10 years ago, completely different than it is today. And the way you approach that sort of that network has changed dramatically. And how does how does the deal we outside of the labs and all of the other stuff? Just manage that? How do you how do you prioritize? I would imagine critical infrastructure, you better secure it, we don't want that. We don't want things happen in there. Okay, I got that. Then how do you sort of, I mean, there's so much going on. I don't know how you do that. Just there it is.

16:07

Well, yeah. And I think Scott's The thing is that, so we have four power administration's that each are responsible for section of the country. And they're responsible for ensuring that security and resilience. And you know, we've really upped our focus on OT, right. So that's why we're having this conversation. Operational technologies have been an afterthought in security for a long time. You know, we have giant transformers, we have other things that the labs that are big and complicated, but just in the power grid is huge transformers and other assets, we have to, we have to worry about not only keeping those up, and operational and secure, we have to worry about things like timing of the grid, right? So if you don't have good timing, the grid won't work. So we use GPS timing, which has some challenges. And one of my jobs actually, at DOD is I'm the senior official for Spectrum Management for DOD, because we coordinate spectrum management across the federal government, and we'll look at who uses radio spectrum. Right and and why our interference exists. And one of my jobs is to make sure that we control spectrum so that the grid is not interfered with by other users. Right. So that's another piece another third, or fourth, I don't know how many more

17:35

I don't either. For me, we got to understand the gymnastics that are going through my head, I can't keep I got asked a question there, write it down

17:45

a piece that other pieces that we have to manage, as you you alluded to this, right, we now have a two way group, we have distributed generation and storage. So a grid used to how are used to go one way. Now power goes two ways in that grid, and you'd have to manage that. And you also have to manage all of these potential entry points for cyber actors, right? instead of there being one big point. Now, you know, I have my house in California has solar, it has batteries, right? So it's got, you know, my, my batteries and my solar are connected to Wi Fi to into my, into the house, and then to the power company, right. So there's opportunities there for bad actors. But also, the grid has to be able to take back the energy I generate, right when I generate it, and it has to be able to manage the situation where the grid goes down, and I'm still generating power and make sure I'm not feeding energy back into a grid, and potentially hurting somebody who's trying to fix a power line. Um, you know, there's also the issue of, of smart meters, right? Those are wireless, you got to be able to protect those smart meters to ensure that no one can get in the grid that way. So the complexity is just through the roof.

18:59

It's through the roof, that that's every time I have this conversation. And it's the same thing I walk away with, oh my gosh, I don't know where to go. I don't know what steps Oh, I I see a problem there. And you know what's interesting? I used to be an old crotchety, journeyman transmission lineman. So when you start talking about power outages, and we even we even had issues where people would zip the, the power through. And as the Transformers The transformer goes one way, it will step it up. And it's people don't realize that, but And you brought up another interesting point. Is that timing. It is its timing, this, this grid is on time, you can't just be out and sinker on a timeframe. I don't know from a system operators perspective. It's, it's only doable by digitization. There's no way because the old school way was like I've got these generations In assets, I got this demand, I'm watching it. And I'm meet meeting demand and supply. And I'm doing it physically. And now there's no way there's no way. Yeah, you get upside down and flip around. It's like, so why is this digital transformation, the impact energy, your innovation and what you guys are focused on? Why is it important?

20:22

Well, you hit on it right. So the piece around the grid, it's important because we want to make sure that we can provide reliable power. So it means that from a digital transformation standpoint, we have to change the way we're operating the grid, to ensure we can keep up with the complexity. You know, we're now looking at, can we actually do our IoT, our OT, our operational technology stuff in the cloud, right? Can we do that work for the power grid in the cloud safely and securely, and have more resilience in that way. So, you know, we've got to find ways to make it easier to operate the grid. Because as it gets more complex to your point, we the individuals who may who used to look at computer screens, or even manual dials, you know, and, and make adjustments aren't going to be able to keep up with the complexity, right? If I've got millions of endpoints coming into, you know, if I'm selling Southern California, Edison, millions and millions of endpoints out there, I've got smart meters, I've got rooftop generation, I've got batteries, I've got all my enterprise assets, which now include storage assets, and generation assets of all different types, and I gotta balance the grid, there's no way I can do that manually. So you've got to digitize that. And you've got to simplify it. And you're gonna be using a, you know, you're gonna be using AI and machine learning to make those adjustments because you simple human being can no longer do it.

21:54

The the, you brought up an interesting component of, Can we can we place this this, this complexity in the cloud? And I agree with you, 100%? Are there any concerns with this digital transformation and latency? Because that's another conversation that people are having to say, I get it in the cloud, but even that little, whatever latency between that and versus, versus the timing on the grid, and keep it going? How do how do we address that?

22:23

Well, I you know, that's an interesting question, right about latency. So you have to figure out what your tolerance is for latency. And some things will be able to go in the cloud, if they're sufficiently real time, and you can't get the, you know, something close enough something with fast enough connection. But you know, the latency doesn't become an issue, you know, for hundreds, if not 1000s of miles before it really becomes a substantial issue. Yeah, even for timing I had, I had a job once where we had two data centers that were half a mile apart, and folks were trying to tell me that they couldn't possibly have their stuff in the data center half a mile away from their office, because there was too much latency. And I was like, You do no data moves at the speed of light. Right. So let's talk about how much latency we got in this half mile. Let me see if I can do that math. But, um, you know, so so it does, it certainly does become an issue, particularly with large amounts of data. But, you know, we'll try and control systems. You know, you can certainly tolerate some distance before you're gonna have a problem. And remember, we also have to figure out how to manage that over long distances. So we have to deal with the distance anyway. So yeah, that's an issue

23:35

either way, because you've got a dispersed asset base in every utility, every service territory, it's, it's not confined by four walls. It's, it's out there, man. And it's going for miles and miles and miles. So it's, it's stunning. So when we start talking about renewables, net 01 of the challenges that I see one of the challenge is, and I get it, there's a lot more EVs out there, right? There just are. It's, it's, it's, it's a scientific factor out there. And they're plugging into the grid. And they're plugging in at the grid. Pretty fast. And yet, grid maintenance grid improvements. That's not a that's not a fast thing. And so I see a disconnect between the speed at which these innovative solutions are attaching themselves to the grid and our ability to be able to say, oh, yeah, there's that and how do we address that? What what are some of the solutions around that?

24:49

Yeah, so that is an interesting problem. I mean, I certainly want to see Evie adoption move faster. That's one of our goals. The department is Evie adoption, and I'm working with DOD to improve the Evie charging infrastructure in this country. You know, I personally I was I was laughing I got home from, I had some house guests who came last night before I got home from my trip. And I, you know, here's the IoT, I opened the garage for them from my phone while I was sitting on an airplane and a gate, right? And they grabbed me, right, because I'd left them keys in the garage and they walked in. So yep, we're in we must be in the right garage. I see a Tesla.

25:25

Yeah, that's cool.

25:27

So you know, I mean, my Tesla sits in my garage and charges at 20 miles an hour, right? Not very fast. And, and, you know, in California, I was charging it off of my own generated power. Here, I'm not because I haven't had a chance to get some panels on this house. But you know, part of it is, the more that we can add that distributed generation capacity to match those vehicles. Right, the more that they become less of a burden on the system. And most of them do charge. At that rate. Most of them most people have a level two charger in their house, if they've got an Eevee. And they're charging at 20 miles an hour, then you got the fast chargers out there. Right. And I think that, you know, the the fast chargers are more of a challenge, although I know that Tesla, some of the other providers are starting to add solar, to their charging stations. So they're adding some generation capacity at that charging station as well. Now there, they probably aren't matching, and I don't know this perfect, I guess it'd be we're not matching their demand and supply, but they're at least adding to the supply. So I think, you know, the reality is, is, to me, distributed generations can solve a lot of these problems, the more we can put rooftop solar, local wind, wherever that is to distribute the demands on the grid, distribute this plan on the grid to match the demands on the grid, that's going to help. But otherwise, it's going to be a transition, right? It's gonna be, it's gonna be a transition to get more power on the grid at the right times for the right devices. And the other key is to get these devices mostly charging these cars, mostly charging an off hours, right, you can program the car to charge in the middle of the night. So if you're charging your garage, you're going to choose to charge at midnight anyway, because you're gonna pay less for power. And so that we can manage the demand on the grid, there's also going to be a future where you're going to be able to at peak time be able to pull, pull charge back out of those vehicles, and bring it back into the grid. So the goal was supposed vehicles to become part of the grid infrastructure as well.

27:30

To me is like, Okay, I said, and be able to manage that, like, here's the point. Here's the point, here's, here are 10,000 in this area, that year, as a system operator, I'm going alright, let's start pulling it up. They're all plugged in. Oh, that one's not plugged in. And I see it. I just,

27:49

well, yeah, good operator has a grid operator has just be able to send a command that says, Okay, I want to pull charge from cars and have and have the systems go, okay, my car is not going to contribute, right? Because you can't possibly possibly manage each individual device.

28:05

And I want everybody to be successful. I just think that it's it's imperative, it's going to happen if you're in manufacturing, whether you like it or not. And you're saying, I don't want to be a part of this digital transformation? Well, your competition is, and you need to consider it and dip your toes in it, because there are a lot of good people out there willing to help you. And that goes with the utility. Now, being an old utility guy. I know you have service territories, all across the country and around the world. But we're talking here. And so every utility has a different journey, right? Every small, mid large, you know, invested or whatever it might be. That's a whole nother level of complexity, because I might not be there. I haven't. I'm over here, and I'm just trying to do this. I just think that it's a heck of a job you have and

29:00

it's a lot of fun. We get to cool stuff. For sure.

29:02

Yeah, you get to cool, do cool stuff. We're gonna have to wrap it up. That's our time. How do people get a hold of you? They're saying, Gosh, can't Can I a utility just contacted doe? Can I just like, hey, I need help.

29:16

Well, most of the utilities already know how to get ahold of us. They work with different parts the organization but they are more than welcome to my doe account on Twitter, send us a note to send an email over to Dewey. We'll be happy to connect them with resources they don't have but we try very hard to be connected to those folks in the energy sector. So

29:38

that's, that's your role. You're you're connecting you better be connected. Well, anyway, you were absolutely spectacular. Thank you for saying yes, man.

29:47

This was a lot of fun. Thanks, guys. Great. I

29:49

can definitely could geek out much longer but you know, I've got to think about the summit. You know, maybe I There's three of us that get really geek out on it up and so now it's down to two All right listeners, we're not we're gonna have all the contact information for an out on Industrial Talk.com. Thank you very much for joining industrial talk on this episode, we are broadcasting from distribute tech 22. And it was just an incredible event highlighting some of the great leaders in the utility space, and really pushing the envelope on what is taking place and transforming the utility business. We're speaking with Scott Reese. He is the CEO of GE Digital. And I'm telling you, he brings the truth bombs. But before we get into that conversation, I want you to put a couple of events on your calendar, the first one, and I'm broadcasting there. The first one is IMTS, this is in Chicago, it is September 12. Through the 17th, which it looks at, if you're in the manufacturing space. Yeah, that's where you want to go a lot of great is a huge, huge, so we will be broadcasting their industrial talk. So if if you're going, you know, reach out to me, let's get something scheduled for on site. The other events that I'm going to is this is the American manufacturing strategy Summit. This is October 11, through the 12. This is in Houston. And again, this is going to be a great event. If you're in manufacturing. Yep, check it out. And don't be afraid I'll be there too. And, and if you're thinking about being in the Houston area, yes. Look me up. And the last one that I have on your calendar, this would be the European manufacturing strategy Summit. This is, again, going to be a great one. This is in Berlin, and the date is November 7 through the ninth. So put those on your calendars. All right, let's get with the conversation with Scott Reese. Enjoy the conversation.

02:41

Welcome to the industrial talk podcast with Scott Mackenzie. Scott is a passionate industry professional dedicated to transferring cutting edge industry focused innovations and trends while highlighting the men and women who keep the world moving. So good on your hardhat grab your work boots. And let's get

02:58

right once again, welcome to industrial talk the number one industrial related podcast in the universe. Scott, That's data that's just pure data that backs that up, just FYI. Don't Don't don't start chirping and saying, Hey, that's impossible. It's got no it's not. It's not. And we celebrate industry professionals all around the world. Because you're bold, you are brave, you dare greatly. you innovate. You solve problems, you're making my life better, and you're making the world a better place to live. Thank you very much for what you do. And it is an ever expanding industrial ecosystem that is just including a lot of problems. So I was like Scott right next to me. Problem solvers. Yes, it is industrial talk. All right, we're broadcasting prop distributech 22, Dallas, Texas is the location. It is a great place. A lot of wonderful vendors happen in here. But we're going to be talking to Scott, he's in the hot seat. Energy Transition. From the software perspective. GE is the company. Let's get cracking. Yeah, that's Jusco. I'm worn out. It's all about you. Just start talking

03:57

at Great. Get the chance to connect with a fellow Scott world's biggest problems. That's right, what we're doing to make things better.

04:03

You're gonna notice listeners right off the bat that we're both really good looking. I love your hair. We go to the same barber house, Ted. Got that. So anyway, give the listeners just give us a little background little 411 on who you

04:18

are. Sure, Scott Reese, kind of a software nerd that spent a lot of time in manufacturing. So a lot of passion for all things manufacturing. But over the last decade or so really spent my time moving all things manufacturing to the cloud, and realizing you know, the power of the cloud and what it can do to tackle some of the big problems. And you're now at GE looking forward to doing that same thing around the energy transition.

04:43

See, that's interesting with about the cloud that there was the cloud is powerful. The cloud allows businesses to do a lot of things that that we weren't able to do not that long ago. And then all of a sudden Cloud was there. And it's like, all right. I remember having to figure out what the cloud was. And somebody said, Well, yeah, just put it in the cloud. The heck are you talking about? And then he, of course, he realized what it is. So let's talk about that. Let's talk about cloud. Let's talk about what GE is doing. And let's talk about how the, how we're talking about energy transition, the need for technology, the need for software, where does G stand on all that?

05:24

Because if you think about, you know, what the cloud does does, in general, it gives us the ability to compute things that previously, we just didn't have a way to compute. So many of the problems that we're facing in the world are computable problems. So we want to bring the power of the cloud to the point of the problem. And with the energy transition, so many things that we need to tackle, these are computable problems, we just need to apply the software to the problem, and make the humans tackling those problems a lot more capable.

05:51

Yeah, see, we've, I know that the technology is always the technology. And again, you got smart people like you, there's always that human component. And you're always talking to utilities that have that commitment to serve, reliable, you know, cost effective, safe wise. And so they're gonna always drive this sort of transition into this. But you find in any interest, or well, when you work with the utilities, sort of like a way, way home? Hey, I don't know if it's security, you have any of those conversations,

06:23

no question. And there are a lot of regulatory elements that we advantage with utilities. And you know, the shift to the cloud won't happen overnight. What we want to do is make sure that we are painting the picture and making sure everybody sees what a better future looks like. Because we're convinced around the energy transition in particular, that the next 10 years, the work that we do, there is going to have a multi generational impact. So we just want to make sure that we're doing the hard work that we know is going to have that multi generational impact and leave a legacy that we can all be proud of.

06:56

What does that look like when we start talking about? I mean, I see. Honestly, Scott, I'm glad you're in that it that is way above my paygrade. I'm sort of that old school guy that has that sort of linear thermal, you know, model in mind generator, transmission, substations, and it's just real linear, down to that pole top transformer and my light goes on. How do we, how do we do this effectively without causing any issues? Because I mean, we're talking about, hey, that guy's got a solar panel, I want to I don't want to wheel it into the grid, and then that might play. It just I don't know how you do.

07:36

It's tricky. Electrons historically, float in one direction. And you know, now that you and I have solar panels, windmills are showing up everywhere. You know, it's no longer a united directional flow of electrons. So utilities are having to figure out how do we bring these things on safely, without destabilizing our grid? And, you know, those are the challenges that we want to help with. Because if we don't tackle those things, a lot of that renewables are going to get resisted. Oh, yeah, they will. And we're never going to move the needle. Right. So cleaner energy is obviously the answer. But we have to be planful and intentional about how we bring those onto the grid, so that we don't need to stabilize things. How

08:20

do you deal with, you know, the typical, the stability of the grid is always driven by real physical assets. GE turbots, man, they're, they're physical, and they're in sync, and they, you know, there's a physical quality to it. How do we address these other generation sources like solar panels? And how do we how do we address that to ensure you know, the grid stability?

08:46

So again, it all comes back to software, we don't believe there's any way that the energy transition happens without software. You know, one of our most recent acquisitions is a company called Opus One, which brings the ability to have visibility and ultimately manage these renewable assets and bringing those into our ADMS solution where people are managing the historical grid, and making those renewables that natural part of the ecosystem is not only important, but we think software is the way that that happens. And that's been our big focus to ge.

09:21

Because the reality is if you don't have that solution, that software one of the challenges that we dealt with, long ago when I was negotiating power purchase agreements, was that the system operator said I'm depending on you, I'm depending on you. And so it was a different conversation. Like you said, your you know, your 15 Meg's I want 15 Meg's, because I'm depending on yours today, that's not the case. It has to be solved by software. Yes. So other way of getting around

09:52

Yeah. And this is, you know, the terminology I use is, you know, these are computable problems. But unless we build the software, we have the AI in place, we don't know what to compute, right? And there's deterministic computable problems and there's non deterministic computable problems. And, you know, the one of the things that I build out in a prior role previous to GE is something we've got general generative design, where you framed the problem, and then literally, the cloud will compute every solution to that problem could be millions, and brings back to you based on what you care about, here's the one solution to the problem. That is literally the most optimal solution, not just one that simply works. A lot of those same dynamics, a lot of those same patterns around computability, applied to helping us accelerate the energy transition

10:42

along the same lines is that we know that I'm a consumer, you're a consumer, and we don't want to go without power, we need it. Right. All right, we got equipment. Everything's with power. One of the things that I see as critical to it, and I think you spoke briefly, is that asset management asset prediction, how do you take these disconnected and I can't see disconnect, that's a sort of these other generation sources to ensure that they're reliable, that they're available, and that you and I, you know, are just sort of numb to the fact that the power works, yeah, they have to be reliable, they have to apply.

11:21

And this is where you know, so in the last decade or so, in building out those generative capabilities, one of the roles I had to play was making sure that our cloud works. Because same thing, if you don't have four or five nines in your cloud, nobody's going to use it. One of the things that you do to make that happen is you monitor normal activities, and you know what normal looks like. And then you're constantly monitoring and looking for abnormal patterns. And so that's just well understood science in the cloud. The same applies around asset management, right. And this is where IoT can really bring value to the equation. So with some of our solutions, like APM, we're able to monitor what normal looks like, look for abnormal patterns, and flag them to whoever it is, and then user or an operator and let them tackle that problem in a plant boy, instead of waiting for it to be a big problem that inconveniences everyone. I was just in Atlanta at our monitoring and diagnostics center there, where we monitor over 3000 power generation units all around the world at three countries. And that's a place where as soon as something abnormal starts to happen, we know first, and we're able to call the customer and say, Hey, I don't know exactly what's going on. But you might want to take a look at that. And they're able to go out and check it out of

12:42

there, you're with that ability to have insights into the health of that asset. You can press the time, you don't want catastrophic, you don't want it. You want to be able to proactively apply the maintenance that is necessary for that asset. For minimal impact, you got it. We have to play that game, we have to be in that game. And that's all

13:07

about collecting the data it is and not just having the data but being able to translate data into insights that are actionable.

13:14

Yeah, that's the game. That's and that's that AI ML type of component because we have limitations. We do. We need that ability to have those platforms in place to say, that's fine, that's fine. That's fine. Well, there's visa data and do it quickly. And then be able to notify you that that's something's going on, you got to see there's no other way of looking at it. Because we do you think and of course, you're gonna say yes, this is sort of a leading question, but thanks for giving me the answer. That's right. All right. Do you think it's gonna be okay for us?

13:52

Look, it's it's all about, you know, taking action quickly. And that's the reason I came out of the job that I had for nearly two decades, and came to GE Digital because I believe in the energy transition, but we're out of time. We have to get after it. We have to get serious and we have to take advantage of the assets that we have with the cloud in particular and bring it to

14:15

C and G brings that trust your CI doc on it good. The majority of all the turbans on the turban Decker G the generator G you know, they're out there. So you have this wealth of knowledge. And from a utilities perspective, right? Utilities culture is not known for being the leader in this innovation journey. They're gonna wait till something is truly high. That's okay. It works. Okay, I'm gonna that's what GE comes into play. You know, you can point to it's like, right there. There it is. That gives that comfort, that trust where

14:49

you want those utilities to kind of play that role, right? Because you said it yourself. When I flipped the switch. I want the light to come on. The reason that happens more times than not is because the role of the utilities play out Our job is to help de risk the future for those utilities pointedly, you know, for you. So that's why we're investing ahead and software to really figure these things out and make it safe for the utilities to put in play that way they're able to save the planet while keeping your lights on.

15:19

That's pretty cool, huh? You're cool. You like to jump.

15:23

I'm a nerd. I just like nerdiness. To me, big problem.

15:26

It's like this. This is the digital coffee table. Industrial digital coffee table right here. Because I know that I can continue. Because I What's interesting, I don't even know some of the questions asked, all I know, is that it's happening. We, we've got to do it. We've got to have that collaborative type of play with with all the parties to come up with a solution that is somewhat so certain, invisible to the end user. They don't know what's going on. It just happens magically sort of like that cloud, SAS all of that stuff, it just sort of it just gets better. And they don't even know it.

16:04

It's happening but like it's not happening fast enough. And that's why if you go over and look at our booth, you know, we use the word accelerate accelerate the energy transition, because we believe it's not happening fast enough. And we're out of time you know, let's beat let's be clear like the time is now and again. That's why I'm excited to be here. It's easy to get people rallied around a mission. A time based mission right? We're not just doing work we're not coming here to do work. We're coming here to make the world a better place and to have it be here for multiple generations after us.

16:37

Your your cool all all Scots are cool. You can use it on all Scots are handsome, and all Scots are cool. And all Scots are just great people. How do people get a hold of this great skier to hear? Yeah. Terrified air? Yeah. It's backed by data. It's science. How do they get a hold of us get? They get a hold of you, not me. They know how to get a hold

17:05

of ge.com/digital. Check us out. And let's save the world together.

17:12

Hey, If this doesn't work out, you got a great career in podcasting. Thank you for being on. Thanks for having me, Scott. All right, listeners. We're gonna wrap it up on the other side. Thank you very much for joining industrial talk. We are broadcasting from distributech 22. Dallas is the town. Boy, it is a great event. It's good to have people together and shaking hands and seeing things and solving problems. All right. Stay tuned, we will be right back.

17:37

You're listening to the industrial talk Podcast Network.

17:46

That was a great conversation. Thank you, Scott Reese, CEO, GE Digital for being on industrial talk. And at the distributech 22 event. Sorry about the noise in the background is just we were all right on the floor, making things happen. All right. Remember, we've got a couple of things that we're rolling out one, we're doing a series on one, the state of utilities, I think that there's a necessity to be able to bring people together, paint that cogent picture. So we're going to be putting that live podcast together. The other thing of those three events, and we're talking about IMTS. We're talking about the manufacturing manufacturing strategy Summit. And that's both Europe and the United States. Put those on your calendar. I'm gonna be there. Please look me up. If you want to get on the podcast, and if you want to be interviewed at those at those events, all right. Be bold, be brave, dare greatly reach out to Scott. And I'm telling you, you're going to change the world. Thank you very much for joining industrial talk. We're going to have another great conversation shortly. So stay tuned.

00:22

Hello, and welcome to industrial talk, the industrial ecosystem focused on your success by featuring industry leaders, companies that are solving problems and who are passionate about collaborating. You know why they're bold, they're brave, they're Daring Greatly each and every day. And they're changing lives, and they are changing the world. That's why we here at industrial talk, celebrate them all the time. That's what we do. All right, in the hot seat, we have a gentleman by the name of Tom Barney, he is a partner and managing director with a Deloitte, we're going to be talking about oil and gas. And I'm telling you, this is a podcast for you to take notes down because he's just nailing the bullet points. He's just saying, Do this, do this, do this. This is what we say, blah, blah, blah. Let's get cracking. Yeah, so I sat down with Tom. And we had a great conversation. This is last barrel standing is a blog or article that he wrote, it's out on industrial talk, of course, it's out on Deloitte. And it really just nails down tremendous steps on on what's taking place within the oil and gas industry what to do, where it's going, I am just telling you a paper and pencil on this particular conversation, he brings the truth lumber in a big way. Couple of items. One, we've got a hashtag called we are industry. And that is just a celebration. And it's just a hashtag that is a culmination of all the stories out here that are featuring true human successes that exists within industry. And I just think inherited as a shirt if you want one of these shirts, if you're looking at on videos with hashtag, it's a it's a black shirt with white lettering called we are industry. But I'm telling you right now, industry is what it is. It's human, it's people. It's solving problems. And it is truly wrapped around education, collaboration, and innovation. So that we all succeed, we need it more than ever, we need to be able to collaborate that as my soapbox, make it happen, make it so hashtag, we are industry. The second item, industrial talk, we'll be broadcasting from IoT solutions World Congress, that is in Barcelona will be broadcasting their live. So be on the lookout for that, as well as broadcasting from a distributor tech live there too, as well featuring incredible, incredible companies and individuals that are again, solving problems, innovating, making our lives better. And then finally, we're going to be at the manufacturing, digital manufacturing summon that's in Chicago, same thing. They're incredible companies are all going to be there. A lot of fun, a lot of great opportunities to learn, educate a lot of great opportunities to collaborate. That's what we need to do. And definitely innovate specially today. All right. Now, again, I go out to Tom Barney stack card out on LinkedIn. Yeah, you'll be impressed. And the conversation you think, oh my gosh, we're gonna be talking about oil and gas is going to get down into the weeds. Now. My notes, the article itself. Very, very strategic, very focused on this is what this is it this is it point, point point, the way I love to rock and roll, and it's all out there, go to industrial talk.com Find out more. There are some backlinks there. So let's get on with the interview because I don't want to waste your time. This is Tom Barney, Deloitte as the company. Let's get cracking. Tom, welcome to industrial talk. Thank you very much for finding time in your busy schedule to talk to the best listeners in the world. How are you doing?

04:15

I'm doing well today. It's a nice sunny day in Houston. So can't complain.

04:19

I'm in New Orleans right now right outside of New Orleans. And I'm sure you're getting a great weather too. I'm doing the same thing. It's sort of weird because I got spring fever.

04:29

We should probably do this outside next time.

04:33

Yeah, but you know how it is. It's the same thing in Houston. Same thing in Texas. Same thing, Louisiana. Today's good. Tomorrow, we'll probably you know, sweater tushies off, you know, it'll be completely different and muggy and then you want to stay inside. All right. For the listeners. Let's get the sort of level set. I've looked at your stack card out there on LinkedIn, massive skills. But without me sort of yammering on give us a little background on who Tom is.

04:59

So I won't tell you the number of years I've been doing this type of work because I've run out of digits to say how long I've been in this type of business. It's a combination of both industry, I was at a service company before and consulting as well. For Deloitte, I head up our core operations practice. So by that, you know, it's like, how do you actually manage the oil and gas platforms and things like that? How do you maximize potential etc. And then a lot of that today means also applying digital different types of solutions for them. And so I lead up a group that focuses on those types of aspects and capabilities.

05:37

So you're focused on digital stuff that is impacting oil and gas, right?

05:42

Yeah, that winds up being a lot of what we do today, just because it's, it's not about doing things, traditional ways of working, and just lean six sigma and process flow. It's actually how do you reimagine and enable that with leveraging different tools such as digital?

05:57

Yeah, that's a that's a hot topic. And now, listeners, we're going to talk about an article or a report that was generated by Tom. And it's an interesting report, and I liked the title of it is catchy. It is pithy at the same time, last barrel standing, give the listeners a little background on on on the premise behind that particular article.

06:20

Sure. So essentially, if you think about it, so I can, in every energy scenario people are talking about now in the future of oil and gas, and that analysts will still say that, you know, oil and gas is here for for the foreseeable future, it's still part of the energy mix. Now that said, you know, it's not about a debate of if the energy transition is happening, it's more discussed around pace as to when that will happen. So in a world where we still need oil and gas, and there's but there's also this energy transition happening, we kind of see four different types of upstream operators evolving over time. And those will have to evolve to say, if you really want to be, you know, last and fit for any oil, price, etc, like that. There are going to be operating model implications across these four different types of archetypes, as we've called them, and how are operators going to adjust their operating models to essentially for those who decide to stay in oil and gas be that last barrel standing? That's essentially the premise.

07:24

You mentioned briefly? Four points four. Can you sort of expand upon that, please?

07:30

Sure. So the archetypes is essentially it's, you know, start at the book end. On one side, we have one that we call the hydrocarbon Staller. That's essentially the operator who says, You know what, I'm fundamentally an oil and gas company, this is what I do, I'm not changing my portfolio, I'm sticking to this, on the opposite side of that is what we call the net zero pioneer. So it's exactly right is the opposite of it. It's someone who says, You know what, I'm actually getting out of oil and gas, and I'm pivoting to new energies. So that's the book ends in the middle, we have those who take a little bit of flavor of each. So the one after hydrocarbon stalwart is the one that we call a low carbon producer, similar to the stalwarts, and the fact that they're still saying, Hey, I'm raising my hand, I'm an upstream player, but they recognize that there's a need to decarbonize and are making intentional choices to do so. They're balancing the economics of whatever play they're in with the environmental impact. And then the next one, which rounds out the four is what we call the green followers. So just before the net zero, and those are those who are saying I'm gonna go a step further than low carbon producers, I will slowly start pivoting out of my oil and gas portfolio, especially those that start not necessarily top of my revenue generation, margin generation, etc, that I'll start pivoting and I'm going to start pivoting a bit more to new energies. But I'm not going to jump head deep the way that net zero did, but I will overtime start adjusting my portfolio that's essentially the spectrum

09:08

of what was number three. I didn't really catch it, I got it. But what was what's the title, the number three, green follower green? Uh huh. Now I would imagine and correct me if I'm wrong, if I'm a if I'm a stalwart, the hydrocarbon stalwart, right, I'm, I'm all in. Do you foresee the necessity eventually, because I'm stubborn, for lack of a better term? Me then dipping my toes into low carbon and then then going down that do you think that it happens? What's that sort of culture taking place?

09:47

So what I'd say is across all four archetypes, you know, there are some very obvious operating model aspects that need to be considered and some of those obvious are is hey, if I'm not drilling in completing wells or managing oil anymore, I'm one of these. What's it called netzero pioneers. And I'm, let's say, my portfolio is full of wind, well, I don't need a reservoir engineer anymore. So that's the obvious, we're going to change capabilities that we need based on it. But then there's three things that we see, regardless of which one you choose, you're gonna have to do a flavor of this. And when I say a flavor of this, how far you go in depends on how much you're sticking with oil and gas, or you're moving to, to new types. But the three things that we talked about is, regardless, everyone needs to lean out based business and drive capital efficiency. This is fundamental to being the last federal standard, the economics will change, you want to be the one that is fit. If I'm the hydrocarbon stalwart, and I want to be fit for any bike, I need to make sure I have a very nimble, agile organization that can run at multiple different cost layer. That's going to be the first one. The second one is decarbonizing the EMP value chain, that was kind of your question, everyone, to some degree, is going to need to show that we're at least doing our best to minimize our carbon footprint. So the hydrocarbon stalwarts, hey, I'm not gonna flare as much, I'm going to take certain things out. Now, as you go across that spectrum. Well, I'm changing my portfolio, I'm moving into clean energy. I'm doing things like that. So that's part of that decarbonisation. But the spectrum of what you go with depends on where do you fall on that? The third thing that is if I think about it, like so, I'm leaning out, I'm going to be more cost efficient, and everything I do, I'm going to make smart decisions. And then I'm going to be better at understanding my carbon footprint and how to prep. So that means the third thing is, I need to be intentional about how I leverage digital as a coordinator, to monitor execute, optimize all of these things. So those are kind of the three aspects around the operating model that we think we'll have, you're gonna have to deep dive on more.

12:00

Yeah. And I think that I think the creating efficiency being a lot more nimble requires a digital conversation, right? I guess you do, I don't think you can achieve whatever that objective is without a concerted effort into your digital conversation, right? Yeah,

12:21

I so I'm, what I'd say to is, there's probably no, sorry, you're gonna get more numbers, we start with four. And then we go to three things and but under that first one, that lean out the base business and drive capital efficiency, what we what I share in more detail in the in the article, though, is around to do that. There's three areas you need to focus on and mentalities you need to change. And so if I'm really going to lean out drive capital efficiency, what does that mean? First thing is this balance between value versus cost, I need to change my mindset around that. And when I say cost, in historical times, oil and gas companies were like, hey, market cycle happens. You know, market price is down, just slash my cost, just got. And I wind up making sometimes decisions that will bite me in the rear later in, in the future. But I mean, it's like, here's an example of one operator I worked with, in the height of 2015 2016. They're cutting all their facilities costs out on a pad. And the problem with doing that is a few years later, they're like, hey, I want to work differently. I don't want to touch every Well, every day, I want to be able to do more remotely, you didn't invest in the automation or the OT that you needed to be able to do a lot of that because you were focused on cutting down costs. So you have to be Yeah, this is where the value aspect comes in, you have to rethink and take time to do kind of what I call a structural reset. So I will still do some of those traditional cost taker. But instead of looking at just Lean Six Sigma, because that's the way to cut my processes, it's going to be about reimagining that process, streamlining and automating it, but also challenging how I currently work. So sticking with the unconventional since we I was just mentioning it. There's an approach called Agile manufacturing. Yep, not the factory model type thing and how I deliver wells, etc. So when I say, hey, we do this and unconventional Well, why wouldn't I think about that in my conventional assets as well? Are there aspects of how we iterate short cycle doing MVPs? Can we apply that to the traditional long lead that it takes to do a well design? And we've seen some companies starting to do that outside of unconventional portfolio applying it to a conventional so we need to see that happen. So that's the value versus cost. Then the other aspect of this lean out and capital efficiency is collaborate versus compete. So me, I've worked for a service company. I, I know this mentality of it's us versus them. We need to change that dichotomy. When oil prices are typically high A service companies come along and they're like, we're charging you more in low oil prices, operators beat up the service company. I don't see that working in the future. So the last Pharaoh standing, you need to drive every efficiency, you can drive everything you can to improve your margins. So that means rethinking this partnership. So can you create a structure where we want to jointly, you know, work together for each other's benefit? That it's not about just contract incentives that say do XYZ you get this dollar amount? It's actually you know, what? We both realize we have some inefficiencies in a process. What if we did a as an example, joint study, and we work together to figure out what those true bottlenecks are. And then along the way, maybe I figured out that as a service company, these are 10 things I'm giving you, the number eight on that list, you never actually use, you never get any benefit out of it. So what if I just said, I stopped doing that, too, I'm going to reduce my cost for you. So maybe you benefit me back by saying, Okay, I'll, I'll give you a bit of that savings, or I'll give you a little extra work to incentivize you these other ways. That's creating more of a mutual trust and, and collaboration. And the other thing we need to see is where I kind of call it a 360 degree ecosystem suppliers knots working together type area where we're regardless of what's happening across all my field and all my assets, we have this seamless visibility, to collaborate, hey, don't send a truck up to that, that pad to pick up the tank or anything like that right now. We have issues your we don't, you don't need to encourage emerge here, we'll send yourself more dynamically collaborating to each other's benefit, not just to each other's pocketbook, so to speak. And then the last one not taking nice, big deep breath is you know, if we talked about value versus cost, collaborate versus compete, well, the last one in this lean out theme is capabilities versus size. So in the old traditional sense, downturn happens, I just kept my head down.

16:59

It's you know, but maybe I need to rethink what the true structure of my organization needs to mean. I need to challenge what work needs to get done, where that work needs to get done, and who needs to do that work. And I mean, front office, back office roles. I think the industry already understands we can do things differently. But there's a key learnings in COVID, and remote work that I think a lot of these operators have started to get a sense for companies, service companies start to get a sense for, actually, you know, what if I take advantage of very smart folks who work in different countries in different regions, and use them to collaborate with me to deliver work, I don't necessarily need everybody to sit here in Houston, or whichever country you're based at, we can we can find different ways of working together. Also, what oil and gas companies need to do is if I look about what it takes for you to drill, complete, manage production, all that? Do all those core engineers near worlds always need to be on my book. Or can I say, Hey, there's this concept of a gig economy, there's this concept of service companies are other ways of outsourcing. So to speak, some of that traditional work that we say has to be ups, you still need somebody in house, but as a way of creating a base load that I always do. And then I manage the rest differently. But that's not what I saw on the downturn was the minute you need to start cutting. It's like, okay, you get rid of all external services. And then I make everybody my own folks to work. But it's like, maybe if you use service companies and others in a different way previously, can you not continue to do that by really challenging what those core competencies really are for you internally that you must always have on your books? A pause, so that kind of describes the lien. Now,

18:43

this is this is rich information. Definitely a couple of things that I want to point out, did you find that the pandemic as a whole sort of facilitated this type of a conversation because what you're touching on is a human element, right? It's all great to balance value versus cost. But you have this whole traditional legacy thinking over here that we don't do it that way. We've done it this way for years and years, right. But now I've got this pandemic, I've got to, I got to be more nimble. I've got to be more agile, I've got to be, I've got to be flexible, your your your point on collaborate. That is like that's, if it was four letters, it'd be a four letter word. But it's not four letters. It's a longer word. But do you find that there? This is all good, but do you find there's a resistance or reluctance from a human perspective to do any of this? Yeah.

19:42

So the Collaborate versus compete was two different CEOs. And one of them more recently said the service companies know me the best. The only way I'm ever gonna Really get better than that is I have to work with them. So that's one side some see it. Then there was another one. We were doing a workshop and all that, and I was chatting away. And I'm saying, Okay, what about this theme here. And his perspective was, that sounds good on paper, at the end of the day, I just don't trust them. Not gonna happen. And it's that, that trust, that lack of trust is the hard thing. And it's really going to, it's on both sides. By the way, it's it's not like it's just one direction. But it is a matter of like, who's going to be that first person to say, I'm going to dip my toe, I'm going to take a shot at doing that, I want to think a little differently. I think that that person who does is going to be the company will be the trendsetter and be the one that then delivers that to be that last bear standing actually squeeze out every single cost that I can, I can deliver more value more revenue as I can. And that doesn't do it by just using my own brain. So

20:58

you're, you're you're hitting on all cylinders. And I really like and yeah, we can we can say, hey, this is an oil and gas. But I find this this approach applicable to manufacturing, not just oil and gas, but manufacturing and absolutely streets where, hey, you don't have all the answers. And if there's a way of being able to work with you, in some way, shape or form where I'm more efficient, you're more efficient we have, we're sharing information that's meaningful. That's a that's a that's a hell of a homerun.

21:29

It is. I mean, I won't know the manufacturing business as well. But it's, you have case studies out there today, I think, can do it. What sometimes feedback from their own gas side is like, well, that's much more cutters the wrong way. But it's like, you know, what you're building, you know, the pieces, well, we are sometimes drilling and doing things differently. And we need to be a bit more nimble. So I'm not sure who I need to work with. And I'm like, okay, but that doesn't mean this is a barrier to being able to try it. And to create a different type of partnership with someone, it just might be a bit easier for an auto company than it is for you. Because it's not as simple as I'm only gonna rely on this person to give me parts. But yet right now, it's all I hear is the the bots. And it's like, we need to think a little differently. But the downturn, I think the more recent one and all that. And 2020 is getting people to rethink a little bit, because you also have to think 2008 2015 2020 It's not, that's not been very fun for oil and gas, it's been a bit too short in between all these cycles.

22:33

And honestly, you bring up another good point I being in oil and gas and, and seeing the changes. And I mean, these are swings, these are massive market swings that just go up and down. me if I was king of oil and gas, I would want to create something a little bit more one predictable, a little bit more collaborative, and more mutually beneficial type of thing. Because this this up and down pump handle, that's a tough way to do business, and it's tough way to live.

23:06

Yeah, you know, it's, it hasn't been a fun time. So

23:13

you wake up and you're saying, Well, I didn't see that one coming. But now what do I do?

23:18

I think my wife is getting sick me going, Oh, no, not another one. And so but you learn to live with it. And the last two are markedly different than 2008 in the sense that 2008 was a very quick down and then backup. But 2015 was the when the whole expression lower for longer started coming out. And just as we thought things were getting better COVID And all that came along, and then that, that derailed certain things, and it's but I will tell you, those operators that are very successful are the ones who have been using this time to say, I'm gonna start challenging, I'm gonna start enabling myself through digital other things, drive a better cost structure a better revenue, or evidence that will maximize everything I can,

24:04

I think there's some regulatory pressures as well on on reducing the carbon footprint to so you can meet that stalwart. But, you know, eventually, you're gonna have to play that game and you're gonna have to reduce that footprint in some way, shape, or form, or it's gonna cost you

24:20

and that's why it's I was saying, like one of our elements is decarbonizing, because regardless, even if you're like, you know what, I'm here to stay, and I'm just going to keep playing, you will have people looking over your shoulder, you will have people calling you out. So as long as you're saying, Hey, I'm doing my part doesn't mean I'm going to stop drilling and bleak completing wells. But you know, I'm not just needlessly flaring. I'm trying to find ways to reduce my emissions, the large sum the larger independents and all that I think are the ones you're going to focus more on like, alright, carbon capture and different techniques and things like that. So moving a little bit more, but you will, you're gonna have a spectrum.

24:57

But again, it's And I can't say this enough, it is a, it is a digital conversation, how do you then capture that data? How do you mind that data? How do you make tactical decisions from the data to be able to achieve all these incredible points that you point out? I mean, it just is. And one of the questions I have for you is that with this with all of this focus, this was great. And the need for that ability to be able to start reaching in doing that digital side. There's, there's, there's a trust factor, there are two, because there are stories out there of people trying to deploy some digital strategy, and it failed, or its cost or it didn't work the way it needs to. We've got to get past that too, don't you

25:47

think? So for me, that means it's success. Because if every single digital project you do works, then you're not trying hard enough, you're not really trying to do anything that's a setup there. So but it's, that's what they'll tell you is like, the whole point is experiment. You need to do the the easy, obvious ones to know, I need to do production authorization, can I use analytics to control my artificial lift? Absolutely, then you're gonna have to experiment and try out some, some new types of techniques. And I was on a call with a client earlier who said, you know, they have an idea, I can't share all the details. But let's say hey, we want to try this. But I'm getting some pushback within the organization, because they're saying, well, we don't see anyone else doing this. Okay. So, you know, is it a good idea, you your asset base, and what you have, it's essentially they they're looking at maximizing the value of the hydrocarbon from upstream, midstream and downstream. Yeah. And it's like, by the way, there are people trying this out, but it it's a hard one to solve, because traditionally, I fit fix upstream and I and downstream worries about downstream and we don't necessarily work together. Well, they have a unique situation where they own a lot of that, and they can feed themselves in that, like, Can I think about differently, that sometimes Guess what? downstream, maybe you're gonna take a hit on your numbers, because it's an a benefit upstream, but as a company overall, that's the right thing to do. But it's that mentality of saying, just because it's hard, doesn't mean you shouldn't try it. And you should try some of these. But if every if everything you illustrate complete success, you're not trying harder.

27:26

See, that is the first time I've heard that spin. I like that your abs spin? Well, no. It's not a negative, it's a positive. Because you, you point out something that I'm a big fan of, if you're not, if you're not pushing the envelope, you're not failing, you're not trying, you know, even from an incremental perspective, this start small scale, whatever, whatever thing you do, if you're not failing, when I say fail on a negative, you're not learning and you're not being you're not creating value as you continue to get your awesome that is I'll have that link to that record. Right. Your your last barrel standing, right?

28:12

I've got a lot. My notes were overflowing with numbers. And I liked them and I like the fact that I can do that. Oh, number one. Oh, yeah. Okay. A stalwart. Okay, I'll get that low carbon. I'm okay. I got that. Makes it easier for me. How do people get a hold of you?

Welcome to the industrial talk podcast with Scott Mackenzie. Scott is a passionate industry professional dedicated to transferring cutting edge industry focused innovations and trends while highlighting the men and women who would keep the world moving. So put on your hard hat, grab your work boots,

00:21

and let's get right once again, welcome to industrial talk the number one industrial related podcast in the universe that celebrates you, the industry professionals, the companies that get it done. You are bold, you are brave, you dare greatly. Absolutely. And you are changing lives. You're solving problems. You're changing the world. How can we argue about that? Also, this is sort of unique. So take a note of this. This will also be rebroadcast on a new podcast called satellite superheroes. Now we're going to be identifying how satellites, the technology and satellites will benefit industry as a whole. It is exciting, it is absolutely amazing innovation. All right, we've got in the hot seat, speaking of satellites, Nitin Das, and Rahul Saxena with AI Dash. And we're gonna just start talking about that satellite 101. Because I need to know that all right, let's get cracking.

01:25

They're doing so many things with satellite that and I don't even know that the technology is mad, just mad. And AI Dash is leading the way, definitely on how that is really impacting industry as a whole. So it's a big game, big deal. But before we get into that, I want to make sure that we've been talking a lot about are you getting the most out of dot, dot, dot, you're getting the most out of your engagements getting the most out, I'm all about marketing, you just just got to know about that. And I think marketing as a whole is really important to your sales, right? It makes sense, right? There goes hand in hand. And I think marketing drives the sales organizations, the sales activity, and really just sales is a confirmation of of what's been talked about in marketing. That's just me, we can expand upon that. But I have been really sort of talking about, Hey, are you getting the most out of you got to ask those questions, especially today getting the most out of whatever it is fill in the blank. The other thing is that I want to be able to just sort of begin sharing of how I sort of look at markets and how I help clients succeed. One, you find that target, who are they 50, just this just let's keep it manageable, not a not a scattergun approach of let's say, 30 or 15,000. That's a tough one, I don't know how to, I don't know how to filter those out. But let's just say we identify and we do our research, and we identify 5050 is manageable, and then that 50, we identify the why we want to connect with them why this is an important contact, why this is strategic for the success of our company, figure that out. And then from there, be able to create that plan of attack that how to help them, whoever those targets succeed. If you truly have a passion to work with these companies, these individuals, you've got to help them succeed. Does that happen right off the bat? No, you're half to create the relationships. But at the heart, right here at the heart, you want to help them succeed. Because if they're happy, and they are successful, everybody's happy. And everybody succeeds. And that is really the goal. So when you start to identify those, those prospects that are important and strategic to your business, and answer the why they are, then you develop that strategy that helps them succeed, whatever that might be, due to, you know, hey, I was thinking about you, here it is, or what I do is like, you got to get on the podcast, you got to elevate that voice. You've got to get that message out there. You got to tell that story because it impacts and helps people succeed. That's how I roll so get the most out of target your prospects understand that why whittle it down? Right? Get? You know, let's just be honest here. In your scatter gun, 15 30,000, whatever, list, there is a small portion that are truly meaningful and strategic to your business. Let's just, why don't we just cut right to the chase, identify that all the tools are out there to make that happen? Why waste your time? Sure. You can keep hammering this stuff out there and hopefully somebody comes to the website and hopefully something. No, no, no, no, no, no, no. Let's be very strategic on who we connect with and help them succeed. Just That's how I grew a business took it public. That's how I took another company and sold it is just, I wanted to truly solve problems for them to help them succeed. All right. Now, again, you heard me allude to it. This is satellite superheroes, which is a new podcast, and it's all part of the industrial talk network, where we're going to be able to, and where we are highlighting incredible professionals, incredible companies that are delivering innovations in their specific space and does real talk. Yeah, I can be pretty high level. But the reality is that we need to have this conversation in satellites. We do, we need to begin tapping in to these individuals that understand the impact the positive impact of what is taking place in the world of satellites, from an industrial perspective, from an environmental perspective, from you know, in, in this case, we're gonna be talking vege management's perspective, it is powerful, it is transformative, and it is going to change the way we do business going forward. And the reality is, we need this businesses, if you really want to have that business that is resilient. If you want to really have that business that

06:17

knows what to do and when to do it. And be able to deploy your capital in the right way. You need innovations, like what we're going to be talking about from AI Dash is satellite is huge, and it's only getting better. wait to hear what is taking place. I'm telling you right now, in the world of satellite, and the reason why this particular conversation is so interesting. First, it's a launch to it is from my perspective, that sort of satellite one conversation I I don't know anything, I know they go up in a rocket and they get out there and they get into the right orbit and they do things. But the reality is, is that it's mad innovation, and these are incredible solutions. Alright, let's get on to it. Nitin and Rahul AI Dash, they are co founders of that particular company. And I'm just telling you, we're gonna be talking about satellites, satellite 101. How how satellites are positively impacting the way vegetation management happens and other things. So really enjoy this conversation. All right, welcome to industrial talk. We have Nitin Das, and Rahul. Okay, a set Saxena. Can I do it?

07:35

Yeah, that's fine. That will do.

07:37

Alright listeners in your face. I got the names right. All right. We are talking AI Dash we are talking about satellites. We're talking about utilities. We're talking about how the use of satellite technology AI is is going to significantly if not now significantly improve vegetation manage within the utility space and as an old crotchety crusty, journeymen utility lineman. I love this topic. So I will be geeking out listeners because well, it's an important topic to have. And I think it's going to be just absolutely transformative when it comes to managing vegetation within the utility space. I like it. It's a cool topic. All right, before we get into that, Nitin, for the listeners out there, give us a little 411 a little background on who you are, and why you're such an incredible professional, and then I'll throw it to you Rahu.

08:33

Okay, so hi, everyone. I'm Nathan. So I'm one of the co founder and chief AI officer at the AI Dash. So here, in addition, basically taking care of all the research and development over AI ml solutions, around 18 plus years of experience with a computer science background. And for the last many years, I'm mostly into AI ml technology, and building solutions around that.

09:01

It's, I have a number of conversations with ai, ai technology, machine learning, simulations, data and all of that stuff. And this is just, this is a fascinating, and you're right at the cutting edge, which is very cool of how you're deploying that AI platform technology in the world of satellites, which is it benefits us tonight. I'm a big fan of that. Rahul, give us a little background on who you are.

09:32

Yeah, hi everyone. This is Rahul am Co-Founder and CTO at AI Dash. So around about 20 years of experience. Some of them was work around building enterprise security software at RSA Security. So did a lot of I mean, right from design development to management around building the software's for large enterprises, fortune 500 enterprises, a bit of startup experience on brambly on the b2c space. So mix of you know entrepreneurship and technical roles. So at AI Dash I look at, you know, building all these different cool applications based on the I mean the cool stuff which Nathan is doing and the AI side and building the platform around that.

10:19

Say Allah listeners, this is going to be a great conversation, as I alluded to just because we've got two incredible professionals with mad skills in the world of technology. And and what makes it exciting for me, outside of the fact I love the utility space, the power space, the energy space, is that I think there's a tremendous transformation that is going to have to happen within the utility world. And I think that it's wonderful that you guys are leading that that charge now. Many of the listeners, I am going to be candid with you many of the listeners know of satellites, no of, you know, yeah, hey, I've got my dish, and I guess I'm getting, you know, whatever the, but there's a lot more to it. If if you could give us Rahu, some sort of that historical perspective of satellites, would be it sort of lay that foundation, and then we're going to expand from there.

11:18

Sure, sure. So the first artificial satellite, or you know, the era of remote sensing began with this satellite called Sputnik one, which was launched has, you know, as early as 1957. So it's been what around 65 years since the first remote sensing satellite was launched. So that was the first satellite which could complete the orbit of Earth every 96 minutes, and can transmit signals which can be received by Earth, right. That's where the remote sensing error kind of began. Back almost 65 years back over a period of time, you know, this space has really evolved. So it started with, let's say, a single sensor, which was more optical, and you can just see, like, you know, the camera image, what you see for your normal camera, eventually, from, let's say, 60s to 80s, it started getting into multispectral, which started capturing more bands. And met them is an expert that can deep dive more into, you know, what those bands are, from there, we got into radio images, thermal images over next two years. And I think, for last couple of decades, the journey has been, rather than having very large satellites, to what they call nano satellites, or smaller satellites, which are very small, and rather than, you know, launching a very large satellite, which is very costly and takes a lot of time, you can actually have, you know, a very small dimension satellite, which you can, you can launch multiple of them, have a constellation of them. So that's where the world has evolved. So just starting from, you know, these funds,

12:54

I'm writing this stuff down, and I'm going to nano satellites, and a cluster I'm all about that is incredible. I didn't know, and it was interesting, back to Sputnik. And I read about it and all that stuff. Really the the premise behind Sputnik as a result of just a satellite is to be able to say it's transmitting PPP, whatever it is, and we're receiving. So we've just proved that we can do up here and and receive whatever that signal and that is, that is a sort of a leap forward in the advancement of technology. I've got to ask, and this is a two unit and how many satellites are being launched every year? Right. And then Then, can you explain for the listeners and and Rahul mentioned it bands? I don't know. Explain a little bit of that. Thanks.

13:56

Sure. Sure, definitely. So, as we have seen the natural progression of the satellite. So the these days 1000 new satellites launched every year. And I would like to say basically the different types of satellites basic like started from our observation, then terrestrial multispectral satellite SAR hyperspectral in multi sensor satellites are there. So in the multi spectral, basically, there are multiple bands having different frequencies and different wavelengths. So those are called basically the red, green, blue, and I our red edge, and SW IR, that is shortwave infrared bands. And combination of these bands can be used for solving different kinds of problems. So that that is basically the multispectral part. There are the different kinds of satellites called the thermal satellites. Basically they capture the thermal signature of any object on the arc. So that is the thermal sink thermal satellite, hypersonic hyperspectral satellites are basically having more than 200 Plus continuous bands, and they basically will open up a new era for basically solving different kinds of problems which which can be solved through multispectral satellite. And there is another kind of satellite called SAR that is a synthetic aperture at synthetic apertures satellite. If you if you look at optical satellites, though there is a limitation they basically can't see through, they can't see in the night and can't see through the cloud. But there are synthetic aperture radar satellite, those are called Radio satellites, they can see they can penetrate through the cloud. And they can also see objects in the night as well. So these are the different kinds of satellites with the with the corresponding bands

15:37

of the satellites. And you bring up a good point because you just said, Hey, satellite could be this satellite could be that this is we could see this, we could see whatever it's it's, it's amazing technology of how does how to if I'm a satellite person, how do I manage that 1000? You know, new satellite inventory, given? What I have here, right? What what is being launched? That's SD unit? And how did how do they make that determination? Or are all satellites multi capable?

16:14

No, so all the satellites are not multi capable. So there are basically multiple sensors installed on some on on a single satellite. But for example, let's say thermoset light. So there is a single sensor, there's a thermal sensor, and a SAR satellite is a single SAR sensor. So yeah, so based on based on the use case, based on all other things, basically, they basically installed multiple sensor or multiple camera on a single satellite.

16:39

And it's just gonna get more and more, right. It's just, it's just, and the technology is just going to continue to advance and it just like anything else, it's definitely not static. It's a very dynamic type of environment. Now let's talk a little bit about that. Me old crotchety, crusty journeyman lineman, I'm a, you know, I'm all about that human inspection, I got in a truck, and I went down, I looked at that tower, and I climbed that tower. And then I looked at that insulator, oh, that insulator, and that was very labor intensive, right. And so then here comes drones, drones were like, all right here, now I can see it and take great pictures. And then, of course, LiDAR, and so on. explain to the listeners of the difference between, let's say, the drone LIDAR human approach versus the satellite. why that is? So I think that's transformative. Can. Rahul, could you sort of help that? Argument? Why the question.

17:45

Yeah. Yeah, sure. So I think the biggest difference there is in terms of sheer scale, which satellite can do the shed satellite, like I mentioned, I mean, starting from Sputnik era, which was covering the whole earth in 96 minutes. So there's a there's a massive coverage, which is happening pretty rapidly, right. So none of the options you mentioned, like LiDAR, whether it is a drone, a drone, or a helicopter, or obviously, for human beings, it's not possible to scale at that rapid speed. So So for example, a satellite can capture very large areas, like up to, let's say, 1000 square kilometers, which is just not possible in you know, drones, or, I mean, from a human angle. So that's, that's one of the major differences. So if you are looking at so obviously, I mean, if you keep going a bit far from the subject, the resolution might drop a bit. But it is more than compensated by the sheer scale by which you know, you can get this imagery captured. Apart from that, since satellite imagery, you know, keeps taking the image and keep sending it to Earth, over a period of time you get archives or archives of these imagery, right? So if I'm looking at an area, I just, I'm not just getting an image as of today, right? Whether it is human or drone, or LiDAR, you can just capture what is there today, right? Unless you have you have been doing this for a very long time. In satellite, I can actually go go to the past and make a future prediction. Right, I can see the pattern and make a prediction based on that.

19:16

See, and I like that. And listeners, that means that that I have a picture. Let's say I have a picture a week ago, I have a picture today I have a picture a month ago. And and and Nitin correct me if I'm wrong, through the AI capability, be able to determine because the key here is, and I would imagine, correct me is that, hey, I want to I'm a utility. I have vegetation management, that is a cost to me, and I want to deploy my money efficiently. Don't go over here, go over there and be able to communicate and deliver that type of insights. Because you have that those multi pictures vision of from above, is that correct?

20:01

Yeah, so basically, you take pictures at multiple point of time, and you can basically estimate the change between these two images. And that case that change can be translated into, into a problem statement, something like that.

20:17

Yeah. Yeah, as, as I, when I was doing patrol work, the the reality is this, this, if there was a rain and there was a eucalyptus, I knew that that was going to grow. And so I'd have to get in the truck and get my, you know, and go out there and cut or waste my time and go out there and say, Oh, I still have clearance from whatever the power line CIO or whatever it might be. It was, it is an Prowl, it is the ability to be able to truly deploy. It's my money. This is, you know, dollars and cents my maintenance dollars in vegetation management to the right, and can I see the type of tree it is like, the, the type of tree, here's eucalyptus, here's, oh, here's this and be able to also have that determination. Is that a possibility? So you can see, I can, like, I geek out on this stuff, because I have that same problem. Can I do that?

21:18

Yeah, sure. I think. Sorry. Yeah. Go ahead.

21:23

I just give you a high level, and then maybe you can add to it. So yeah, I think there are two things here. So from this perspective, I think, yeah, I mean, it's a problem, which, obviously, with his algorithms he can solve. The other angle here is it also depends upon what you are, what you need from this solution. Right? So if when satellite imagery, I can go back to the past, while I'm looking at is whether it's a eucalyptus tree, whether it is some other tree, what's the growth rate? What's the clearance, right? So if, if I'm inspecting manually, so if it is a eucalyptus tree, I understand the growth rate, and we can make up cycle 10 prediction based on that. But if I am, you know, just having this data independent of the specie of the tree, I can make a prediction independent of the specie of the tree. Right. So, so knowing the specie of free becomes slightly less important. But yeah, to your point, I think you can you can add more around, you know, especially if

22:12

I was iterating. The same thing, basically. So with the current set of images, you can basically get the current state of the vegetation, but you you, and with basically the historical images, you can estimate the growth rate of each of the tree. Without knowing this issue, we don't require the species because we we estimated the growth rate of each and every tree within a given area of interest.

22:38

Do you in to this as to unit and do you also in your AI? Solution? Incorporate weather?

22:49

Yes, weather is an important factor, which basically weather soil all these basically, variables are, are the part of a fader a model.

23:00

It then it dovetails nicely with the next question, and this is to unit and it's there is a lot of chatter, a lot of discussion around disaster management we see. Right, it just happens. It's, it's gonna, sadly, it will happen again this year, and we're going to have that same conversation and it's just going to with the the AI satellite solution. How does that help with that? How does it minimize and be able to sort of elevate that disaster conversation?

23:39

Sure, definitely. So I'll basically give you an example of wildfire how how the satellite can be used in the wildfire. So there are three components in wildfire, the precondition before the wildfire, during the wildfire and the post after after the wildfire happens. So before the wildfire the satellite data is used to identify the wildfire risk risk zones, which can be used for hardening the infrastructures and on so if you already know in advance, what all areas are important for wildfire perspective, low mid high, categorize those in globey time, then utilities can take appropriate actions before time to for hardening the grid, and all those things during the wildfire because there's a natural calamity which can't be avoided. So if the wildfire is happening to satellite data can be used for basically estimating the direction in the speed of the wildfire. And then the utility can take appropriate actions. For example, the evac evacuation on time, so if they know the direction isn't all and post wildfires, basically, the post wildfire damage can be estimated through satellite data, which can be used for restoration and many other purposes.

24:49

I'm having a hard time poking holes in your value proposition for utilities. I mean, it makes sense. So if I'm a utility I've had this conversation with utilities is that they're having, they're having challenges less like everybody else. And the challenge is, is I got workforce management. You know, how do I find the right reputable tree? Company to trim? And then why do I do? They're, they're struggling. And and this is a huge budget component to their business just is it's it's a. And if I, if I was a utility company, I would definitely take note, because I think that this, this is a fad, and it's only gonna get better. Right? The it's just let me ask you this, let me ask you this. So with that, with that statement, it's only going to get better. Where do we see it going? Rahul?

25:48

Sure. So I believe, I think one way is to look at is extrapolate the history discussion we had at the beginning of this conversation. So it's going to continue the same way, we had till nano satellites, we are talking about actually pico satellites, which can be even smaller, so more satellites and more coverage, maybe miss use cases, we are also looking at, as more of more of this image becomes available, I mean, there'll be some commercial satellites, there will be some satellites launched by government. So more data becomes available, more kind of models are possible, as we go along, the AI becomes better. And then as we are going forward, and especially this becomes important for things like you know, monitoring for let's say, a wildfire, or a storm and those kind of things. So, the time travel between you know, the signal coming from space to Earth, a lot of work happening on that side as well right. So, how to reduce that time. So, the moment a satellite captures, can Are there ways the signal can be captured very quickly on Earth, so that some action can be taken. So those would be other areas, which we feel there will be more advances.

26:56

I like again, I keep on stubbing my toe on the Nano idea. I can't, I just have to ask it. Now, what's a nano sat How big is a nano satellite, I mean, just physically.

27:13

So basically, let me let me just give you a complete figure so that you will basically have an understanding of the progression in the size of the satellites. So initial, when the Sputnik or the initial phases of satellite, those satellites, basically the the weight of those satellites were around 100 to 500 kg, a single satellite, then there came the micro satellites, the weight got reduced to 5200 kg, then there came on nanosatellites, the weight still got reduced to less than 10 kg. And there's there's a new set of satellites called the PICO satellites, the weight is around 100 grams to one kg. So that is the new set of satellites.

27:53

Come on, listeners, you got to admit that that's pretty cool. That's a great conversation. When I was a boy, I, I was a big fan of Estus rockets. So I would always shoot off these rockets right. Now, I guess I can get as this rocket and put one of those dog on satellites, if it was powerful enough breaking the Earth at the pole. Oh, that is so that's exciting. And you know what else and I sort of dovetail everybody's talking about all the stuff that's in, in, in space right now. But those, those really small satellites address that. I mean, it's it's not a big clunky thing out there, right? It's, they really do they address that. And from a cost perspective, I mean, I can throw a bunch of them in there and and zip it out there and and and so, I get greater bang for the buck for that whatever that that you know, rocket

28:48

and I would like to add one more thing. So along with the basically the change in the size of the satellite, there is also an increase in the resolution. So basically, initially, the resolution was around 5200 meters, the and now the resolution is basically tents. I mean 30 centimeter, 20 centimeter and 50 centimeters, very high resolution satellites.

29:13

Again, add to Rose. I mean, it's gonna it's gonna continue to be better. It's just, it's just gonna continue. I don't know if I'm scared or, or excited or whatever, but that's a that's a heck of a conversation. All right, we're gonna have to wrap it up outside because I would I'd love to continue to talk about it. However, Rahul, how does somebody get a hold of you? Like email what but, you know, they they said, Hey, Rahul spoke to my heart about satellites. How do they get ahold of you?

29:49

Yeah, he will work. I'm on LinkedIn. So So in any of these medium, I'm available.

29:55

Very good and to you knit and how did they get ahold of you too as well?

30:00

The same medium, which basically the whole mentioned.

30:03

I gotta tell you, gents, this was a great conversation I really enjoyed. And I know that we just really just scratched the surface on what you guys are doing at AI Dash and what, what's taking place in how you are. I hate to say it but passionate about helping utilities and their vegetation management, leveraging the technology leveraging satellite hack, have a conversation. Well done to you both. I enjoyed that conversation. Thanks. All right, listeners, you're saying to yourself, Scott, I do want to go, just go out to industrial talk.com You go out to industrial talk.com You will have both all of the contact information, AI Dash everything that you need to pursue additional information from these two individuals. I gotta tell you, I really enjoyed it. All right, listeners, we're gonna wrap it up on the other side. So stay tuned, do not go away.

Welcome to the industrial talk podcast with Scott MacKenzie. Scott is a passionate industry professional dedicated to transferring cutting edge industry focused innovations and trends while highlighting the men and women who keep the world moving. So put on your hard hat, grab your work boots, and let's go. Alright, welcome to the industrial talk podcast where we celebrate industry heroes such as yourself, you are bold, you're brave, you dare greatly. You're changing the world and you're changing lives. That's why we celebrate you on this particular podcast. Now, this is going to be a series now. And of course, I'm super geeky about all this stuff. This is utility stuff. This is power stuff. This is energy stuff. This is brave new world stuff. And this is stuff that is pushing the edge of innovation. We're going to be talking to a gentleman by the name of john a glass Meyer, and he is with Hitachi ABB power grid. And we're gonna get we're going to start this series and we're going to be talking about what it looks like this brave new future and you know, I turn on my lights and it happens. He's got a great story to tell, let's get cracking. Yep. Okay, you know, I love this stuff. Old lineman as myself. I remembered that, you know, it was pretty simple back then when you'd have these big old dog on generators put right at the edge, typically, Bywater whatever, pushing power and and it was pretty straightforward. And and now we're venturing into a brave new world for power generation, utility, grid management, and how do you pull all that stuff together and make it a product that we who we take for granted. So I walk into a room flip on a light switch? Boop, it happens. And john, with Hitachi ABB power grid, and and others are asking those questions because it is very cool. Before we get into the interview, I want to make sure that you have these two events on your calendar. The first one is IoT solutions World Congress, this is October 5, through the seventh, I am hopefully broadcasting from that location at the at that time, spectacular event brought to you by the industrial internet Consortium, and Farah, Barcelona, both organizations put on a great event, let's get our life back in order. The next one is the manufacturing and technology show this is November 9, through the 11th, it's up in the beautiful town of Cleveland, put that on your bucket list, because it is a great location. And they're gonna bring about some great, you know, information about manufacturing technology. And once again, let's get our life back in order because this is a special time. Alright, let's get on with john. Now, again, john brings up I don't know, a semi load of experience within power grid. And of course, when we start talking about attaching additional grip, when we're starting to talk about what is taking place within a lot of the the management of fossil fuels versus energy and, and vice versa, and what do we do? And how do we do it? How do we and and the market saying, hey, I want more of this? What do we do? How do we respond? How do we ensure that the quality of our power is there, because we've got all this technology and, and yet, be able to implement renewables re implement the innovation that is taking place out there. You know, john and his team at Hitachi ABB are doing it. Now we're going to be doing a little quick cast because this is heavy stuff. And we want to make sure that we can consume it. So these are about 10 minutes or less, give or take a few now we're going to be talking on this particular conversation about the grid edge. So enjoy. JOHN, welcome to the industrial talk podcast. I'm looking forward to this conversation because listeners, I'm a big geek when it comes to anything utility anything generation. And, and john brings, well, all of that. How are you doing, john?

04:26

Great. Thanks, Scott for having me here. I'm I'm I can't say that as excited as you but I'm pretty darn excited. Wow,

04:34

man, you're gonna bring me down now. All of a sudden, I bring you down. No, yeah, I was just sorry. No, you didn't give me a break. All right. For the listeners out there. Give us a little background a little 411 on who john is.

04:45

So I am a senior advisor in grid edge solutions with Hitachi ABB power grids. And you may be wondering what on earth grid edge solutions is I believe we're going to talk about that today. So I won't I won't spend too much time but don't. Don't blow it. But the I also so I worked for Hitachi power grids as well as I'm professor, affiliate faculty at the University of Washington in distributed renewable power systems.

05:11

Is that at University of Washington so what is it? university? Yeah, the Huskies, Huskies fantastic football stadium. Oh, it's it's a beautiful football stadium. Fantastic. And you know, I've heard about boats coming up on it. It's like, hey,

05:29

what will happen is the boats will go out, they'll get lunch on out in Ballard and then they'll boat over through the, through the channel and parked right out there for the games.

05:38

All right, these are quick casts, we're going to be talking a lot about just on topics one topic at a time. So we're not going to be impacting your day. If you're listening. That's what we're going to be talking about. Let's, let's broach the subject of grid edge. What is that? grid edge.

05:57

So you may be familiar with the term edge computing. It's it's the power utility equivalent of that. So the idea is, if you look over the 120 30, plus years of power utility that have brought electricity will all over the North America, this is a little bit of a rethinking of that it's rather than that centralized power plant idea grid edge, flips it on its head and talks about bringing power in from the edge. So it's enabling not just the power out there, but all the smarts and all this intelligence related to that. So that would include things buzzwords that you might hear related to this are micro grids, battery, energy storage systems, distributed energy resource resources, or DVRs. There's a whole bunch of things, solar photovoltaics, they're big in this space, too, if you know that getting your power from the sun.

06:51

For me, we take it for granted that on I flip the switch boom, powers, good lights, good. I've got I've got equipment here. It doesn't like fluctuations in any of the cycles or anything it wants. Clean, consistent power. How is grid edge helping me achieve that? Or, you know, achieving my renewable whatever targets? versus how's that helping me?

07:16

Yep. So that's a that's a great point. You know, we're, you know, Hitachi power grids are just more broadly, within the power industry, reliability has been the cornerstone of that you, you say, you flip the light, it comes on. That is awesome. And that is something that we highly, highly values, we talk about reliability, resiliency. So that's if you had this idea of the light, you flip the light on, it comes on. But what if there are some big dramatic event that hits you say there's a superstorm or hurricane earthquake, with these sorts of grid edge technologies, where you're getting your power is close to you. So there's an expectation that you'll be able to have not only reliability, but also resiliency, you're also figuring out and bringing in some of the automation and controls affiliated with this type of stuff. So that if you want to get your power from lots of renewables get, say, all of your energy from renewables, it provides the power electronics, the controls, the automation, all that stuff you need, you don't have to worry about it.

08:18

You're saying you're saying that if I want to get my lights today, from wind? Well, for lack of a better term right there, right? You're saying the the the automation or the the technology out there? tells me that I am getting in from wind?

08:36

Well, issue it right. Yes, that's right. If you do it, right, you have designed it from the get go with reliability in mind. And you can do that you can run your power system 100% on renewables, if you want, we often look at that. And you may not want that, we like to question Where do you get your power, we definitely, if you want to do that, we can enable you to do that. If you want to focus completely on reliability, if you want to focus on low cost, if you want to do some compromise, or some way to maximize across all those different considerations of reliability, cost, renewable, you know, environment type thing, you can do that with grid edge solutions, they really allow you to do that.

09:21

See? Now that's interesting. What was the tipping point like all of a sudden, you know, traditional utility business model, right? Big generation, pushing it through wires, bringing on data substations, and it's just not right to the house. But it was just big, big stuff. What was that tipping point where if somebody says, Hey, you know, I can have micro grid, I can I can do this. I can do that. But as we continue to do this and that it requires greater sophistication from a digital point of view. Right? digitalization, what was that tipping? What was that tipping point?

09:57

So you know, actually, I think it's essentially I don't know I haven't really thought about it in those terms of a tipping point, I've thought of it more like a locomotive getting up to speed, there's just been sort of momentum building around this. There are there have certainly been some big moments, some watershed type moments, things like the price of solar panels, solar photovoltaic panels coming down consistently. I mean, you know, you think about that 1010 years ago, the price of solar panels were about, oh, somewhere in the neighborhood of five to 10 times what they are today, you look at battery, and the batteries that go into some of these, you know, big you'll hear it called in, in the, in the common media, the batteries in the utility network, you know, if you're getting the technical service or battery energy storage systems, those the price of the batteries that go inside those, those have come down, like five years ago, they were maybe $3,000 a kilowatt hour. They're they're also down by about an order of magnitude. So you can get the batteries that go in for, you know, normally around a 10th of that today. So there's been these massive swings that of course, you'd be remiss not to talk about the computer revolution that's that's been our Yeah, see,

11:13

that's that's hold that industry for Dotto, that whole innovation that all that that one day, we couldn't do it today we can it's all cloud, it's, it's this it's that we're going, you know, data analytics, we're just popping and snapping and all that stuff. To your point, Tesla has come out with a car, electric car. And I think the price point on it is 19 grand. It's it's, it's the economics, that is from my perspective, driving this, if the economics continue to push down and makes it more viable, utilities as a whole, have no excuse, they've got to figure something out. And that's where that's where Hitachi power grid comes into play. Because you, your organization, make sure that my lights don't flicker.

12:07

Yeah, it's, it's, it's all well and good to have an electric vehicle but you, you talk about wanting your lights to come on, I guarantee you, if you've got a vehicle that's powered by it, you definitely want that power there when you need it. And with these grid edge technologies, you can have that assurance, you can have the assurance of the utility, with an additional security layer right there. You can have some backup at your house, at your business, in your community, all these different layers of where you get your power from, and where you get your reliability from. Those can all be brought together under this portfolio of solutions.

12:42

And the bottom line, it's happening. It's happening, you either either play or you just move aside because it's like your train analogy. It's happening. You're trying to get down that and it's only going to go faster. It's only it's only going to be it's just going to happen, you better be a part of that whole game.

13:00

You got to be a part of it. And you know that you'd be remiss not to talk about just, you know, it's not just the cost of these things. It's also people are demanding it. People want their energy to come from renewable sources. Many people are worried about climate change.
