Scott is a passionate industry professional dedicated to transferring cutting edge industry focused innovations and trends while highlighting the men and women who keep the world moving. So put on your hard hat, grab your work boots,

01:13

and let's Alright, once again, welcome to industrial talk the number one industrial related podcast in the universe. Patricia I'm not I'm not that's that's that's factual. By the way, it's all driven by data. That's why I'm the number one podcast in the world. And this is where we celebrate industry professionals from all around the world. Because you are bold, you are brave, you dare greatly. You solve problems. You innovate like nobody's business, and you're changing lives. And therefore you are changing the world each and every day. Why not celebrate. As you can tell, by the I guess the buzz in the background, we are broadcasting last scene live from DistribuTECH 2022. And incredible then you put this on your bucket list, because there are a lot of great professionals roaming around here. Again, solving problems. It's a great venue. I like it. All right in the hot seat. Patricia, say your last name petition was signed for cipher. eaten as the company. How are you doing? I am so thankful that you were so flexible to just pop on the podcast because you're busy person

02:22

will be eaten. And luckily we all I mean, everything changes at the moment in the utility industry. I mean, from you know, when I talked to my son, but 10 years ago, he was not like Mommy, I'm not really cool industry. But now oh, now I'm cool. And a cool mom. So that's I mean, the energy industry becomes really interesting. Also for the younger generation. They think about you know, global warming, the impact, how much energy should they use? What is the future? renewables? We have just installed solar, lots of them excited. And we have a battery at home. So

02:59

yeah, did you have a solar and battery? Yes. solution at your house?

03:03

I'm in the PSPS zone. So public safety power shut off multiple times last year. So I'm at the point. Well, I want to say

03:14

wouldn't mean you're out of California. Yes, exactly. I'm telling you. I don't know how to process this, that the utilities have to shut off power. Growing up in the utility my dad was with Southern California I was alignment. And that that conversation never happened. Oh, never. And now it's like, this is how we manage this is what we do. This is the expectations. It's just bizarre. Do you think that we'll ever get to a point where, I mean, we're transitioning and it's all you know, pretty dynamic out there. But shutting down power is just an interesting challenge. And

03:52

it's just a customer, you're absolutely not happy, especially when your sewer system or I happen to a pump doesn't work. You feel like you know, you're gonna feel dwells completely. So yes, it's it's frustrating, but I understand. I mean, we've had horrible fails in California. I think some of the utility maybe have not invested enough. And that's me as a customer speaking. But, I mean, you know, if it's a trade off not having electricity on your house building down, I will always take not having him. So it's up to you. Oh,

04:32

Yeah, that's, that's yeah, that makes sense. Definitely. But it's, it's, it's but but but what I do here, there are people talking companies like yours and others, talking about solutions on how to transition into this, this new thing. It's happening so fast, but they're able to, they're starting to think through that.

04:55

They'll definitely analytics I mean, you can measure it in different ways but you Um, one of the analytics I worked on, was looking at momentary outages momentary outages is when a branch hits a line or something like that

05:09

relays test that's exactly required.

05:13

And so you can begin to measure those and say, hey, well, where does it happen along the network. And when you know, wherever it happens, you can begin to more effectively cut to the bushes, and

05:26

you start talking about vegetation management. But the reality is, you're right. If you are tracking these interruptions, then you can also pull in some weather, you can pull in, you can pull in various sources of data to create that picture of say, get a Triq crew out there.

05:44

Get caught it early, you know, vegetation management is one of the most expensive costs or utility.

05:51

And it's, it's, it's, it's part of that whole delivery of service. And it's constantly having issues and it's expensive. And everybody's trying to figure out the best way to

06:03

do it exactly. In many ways. I mean, momentary outages, this one, putting sensors out there to measure these, or outages. And that's, that's fairly a way to do it. And I think that's, that's something we have to do. Otherwise, you have to undercount everything, which is also expensive. Yeah,

06:21

you can't do that too, because then you have all the other, can I underground here? Do I have to get the easement? Do I, what do I do here? How do I do? There's just so many other things? And that's not gonna

06:30

happen overnight? No. And then monitoring goes again, you don't see it anymore? No, you don't. If you do need more equipment in the field to monitor those lines to make sure what you don't see you still have some insights into it. And, again, analytics, and I think analytics is fairly well we go in with do you tell if

06:50

you're, I think you're spot on. And I think what I'm hearing clear, loud and clear that these this event is that utilities, and let's just be honest, utilities are the ones that are really driving, that they're the ones right, they're the ones that have this obligation to serve their territory, and therefore, how do we do it most effectively, they've got, you know, pressures on it. So they're going to drive this adoption in this this going forward. But what I do here is that there are a lot of, you know, arrows in their quiver to be able to provide that insights, data analytics, all of the stuff that is necessary to make sound decisions, tactical decisions.

07:29

Exactly. And especially people like me, suddenly, we say, I want to have my own electricity. And if I have too much, I will give it back to the network. And that's a challenge for utilities too. And I think that's something a lot of people don't realize, they all think it's the customer, it's the customer, the customer is very, very important. But having the distributed network, the distribution network is really up and running. It's a major challenge.

07:56

Again, I'm sort of old school, old school, when I say this, though, when I went to the system operators, for watching the system, and seeing how they app manage that. It was challenged back when you had the centralized generation, and they you know, now it's all distributed. And and you have a battery, they have batteries, and be able to do it in such a way that makes sense. And in fact, if I don't know how to do it,

08:21

and interesting data analytics to you see that? It is solar, it's clustering. So it's really, oh, my neighbor has solar, they had to add, let's get an EV. Let's get solar maybe to talk to each other. And they find out oh, that's really cool. Let's have to do you have this clusters. And that makes it difficult for utility to Because suddenly, an EV can use as much as your whole house and electricity. But the transform was not laid out for that

08:49

the infrastructure is not there. How do we do

08:53

that? Suddenly, it doubles your electricity consumption. So how do you build a network that it holds up that you're aware of it? What's happening out in the field? And solar very often you have to mention to the utility and you have to get a permit for that can't just plug it in?

09:10

You know, it's just like air. There we go. So let's talk a little bit about that bright layer. What is that

09:15

white layer is really our digital solution. Looking really at what we just talked about? Collecting the data mainly on the distribution network, collecting the data, looking at the data and making informed decision for the utility helped them. Well, like we have one planning tool. And well, do you want to put your solar installation, your wind installation? What will be the impact on your network? Information like that? So that that really helps you to think about what will be the impact? And where do you want to put additional resources in Dell? Or if you want to build an extra neighborhood, what will be the impact on the distribution network? How do I have to build it? What kind of cables do I need? What kind of transformers do I need?

10:03

Do you also speculate or look out into the future to and say, Hey, this is a growing community, therefore, you don't need three, you need 954 wire you need whatever, you need a bigger capacity because it's going to expand

10:17

exactly what customers forecasting. So you have to forecast you do at load analysis thinking as to what will be the future loading, then you can put in the planning model, and then you can calculate what is the infrastructure? And where do I best put it in without have the least impact on changing our infrastructure?

10:37

So you have this platform? Do I Do I put in historical data within a community? Does it learn does? Is there an AI analytics component or what? So I have to put data in to get some sort of information out? Yes, take us through that process. So

10:54

normally, when you don't different ways to do analytics, one is you fail the test the model, you get data, historical data, to look back up the future, that's really testing and informing the model. That is another way to just give the data and say, Hey, where are the outliers. So let's say put pictures of dogs and cats and, and the system will say, Oh, this, these are two legged, these are four legged, they look the same, but they will not say this is a duck, this is a cat. But when you do Bailey trained a model, you say this is a duck, this is a cat, and it will find the toxic cats and label it this is this is so different ways to do. Machine.

11:42

Because here's an interesting, you know, as well as I do utilities, there's been that sort of singular focus and the singular focus is deliver power at the lowest possible costs. For the consumer, they're sort of pretty simple. And it makes sense, reliable, right? Don't interrupt things like that. So that's pretty simple. And it's and your decisions all revolve around that from a utility perspective. Do you find that utilities as this, this journey begins and it's fast? It's just oddly fast? Able to sort of, do it be nimble enough, sort of retain that same sort of thinking, but do you find that, you know, are you getting good data to be able to do what you need to do? I mean, it's sort of interesting.

12:34

We looked at, you know, consumption to predict consumption, how, ultimately, you know, COVID consumption change quite a bit, because people begin to work at home. And Sunday, the coal consumption, pedal change. And so you know, you need weather data to predict what will be the consumption. And these models change over time, like, two years ago, in California, we had this huge piles. And suddenly, we had all the smoke in the air. And a lot of the solo didn't work anymore, because we almost had a nuclear winter, it got colder, and the solar didn't work. And so then we had to change our model again and say, Oh, we have to take this parameter. So and analytics is not just done, your environment changes, and you have to adjust to that.

13:26

But those are statistical outliers. You can, although you have to model it. Is it going to happen again? Or do you see this as this?

13:34

But you can you can, you know, you see, okay, Napa Valley, you have a fire, you know how the wind goes. So you can make some assumptions? Say, Yes, it could come in this direction, what would be the impact? You have another 20%, something like that, but still some certainty what could happen?

13:54

Yeah, you can do this. So you run simulations to absolutely he's like, okay, here, well, let's, let's use this and this. What does that look like? Okay, let's change this parameter. That parameter. Let's see what it looks like.

14:07

Yeah. So I will hold Sam software. It's all about planning. What if model? What if I do a put a tee? Or what if I do that? Yes, exactly. So that you make the best decision you can with the least cost.

14:20

So let's say I'm a utility. And I'm interested in having this type of data visibility. So I contact you. Then he says, Yep, got it. We can do something we see it we have. How long does it take for you to deploy a system like this? I'm sure it evolves. It sort of grows and learns and does what it needs to do. But just from a baseline perspective, being able to generate real information that helps them make tactical decisions.

14:53

That's not an easy question, because very often we need that historical data to thank them All and very often is how fast can utility providers? How often can they get people to get that data, gather that data? And then we have to cleanse the data first, and then analyze it very often, we can really work together for a proof of concept or something in the beginning to really, do we solve their pain points? Do we measure the right stuff? I would say, somewhere between three to nine months, depending on how big the project is, and how close we are. Yeah. And

15:28

what I hear is there's a human component, and if they had a major focus on saying, Okay, let's get the data. They're asking for this, this, this, this, this, whatever, whatever it is, but then we can do it much faster. That's exactly correct. And it's always but but this, this, this, this, this, and then I have to do that, that, that that that and then there's a there's a, but you bring up an interesting point that there's that necessity just to scrub that data? Yeah,

15:49

absolutely. I mean, you get the data and suddenly think, is that data like that? And then you go back and said, I had one example. Well, we measured phases, and one was 0236. And suddenly, we had a minus 180. And it's like, what is that? And I said, Oh, we have made of the measure plus 180 minus 100. I didn't say what two 360. So and simple case, but if you don't know that you think a negative value, but what's wrong here? But it's just a different medium. And so you have to normalize and clean the data.

16:23

And again, that's on a case by case basis most definitely because we've all been there.

16:29

Some there are still some very old needles out there as well. Infrastructure with

16:33

Yes, and each utility is different. Each service territory is different each every everything is different. Construction Standards, wiring, you name it, it's different.

16:44

And some devices don't give take on some gift data. So you also have often to estimate stuff. If I don't get data here. What is the estimation what is the best estimation I can do?

16:56

I hear job security. Because it never ends. I will never

17:01

end I think you know that people think that will be out of a job. No, I think that what's interesting chops. Yes.

17:07

That is spot on. All right. How did they get a hold of you? Patricia? They're saying that she is talking my talk. How do I get a hold you

01:13

and let's once again welcome to industrial talk the number one industrial related podcast in the universe that celebrates industry professionals all around the world. You are bold, you are brave and daring greatly. You're solving problems. And you're changing lives. Therefore you are changing the world each and every day, why not celebrate, you must be celebrated and we are mon sight distributech 22, Dallas, Texas is the place. And we're just having a great time because there are a lot of great people. It's fun talking about people who have met people for the first time and only knew them virtually. However, we have very in the hot seat. GE Grid Solutions is the company GE is a GE just grid solutions are G.

02:01

That's a big topic that everybody has a grid around the world. How

02:08

is the greatest industrial system done by mankind?

02:12

See, I never heard that one. That's a good one. You wrote about that? Right? Yeah, yes. Because when I was, again, when I was an old lineman, it was pretty simple. It was pretty linear. It was like generation down to me consumer flipping a switch, and it was good. Now it's completely different. It requires companies like yours.

02:33

Well, there's quite a big change, you start by you enable the energy transition. So we're changing the way we generate electricity. It's no longer predictable. dispatchable is gonna be renewables connected, the transmission connected the distribution, even connecting in the rooftops of the houses. So that's a massive transformation on what the grid needs to host and to enable

02:58

it that's a that's a technology equation. I mean, there's a human component, but but to be able to do that in a as real time as possible, and be able to match load, you know, you still want to be able to say, hey, flip the switch, it all works. You know, that's that's a challenge.

03:18

I would say there's a human component, which is society's expectation, yes, on energy transition on prosumers, being part of the choice on how they produce when they consume, wanting to support the system with demand side flexibility. But definitely the technology play will be critical to enable all this transformation.

03:41

So where do we in this whole journey? This? Again, it's it's the ability to be able to communicate with these these. I can't, I can't, I'm not saying disconnected. But if I have a car and it has a battery, I'm a part of the solution, theoretically. And then if, if my neighbor has a battery we do together are part of the solution of being able to make sure that supply man demand and we might be able to be called into action. With Where do you see it's starting? I mean, you mentioned something about pulling all of these elements together, can you sort of help the listeners understand what GE grid solutions is providing.

04:24

So we're helping to pull the elements together with quite of the hardware equipment, so the grid is and will be a physical infrastructure. But at the same time, we're working on the control and digital layer that orchestrate the different resources across the system to make sure we still have the lights on when we need

04:46

so definitely, so you're at the hardware of course yeah, you're G Come on. As I as I shrug my shoulder now absolutely. And then of course that digital later because But how do you see it sort of rolling out? What is your what? What's your expectation of this grid of the future.

05:09

Some of the key places that this we need to enable this transformation while we keep the system resilient, stable, reliable, that's, that's really an expectation from society, from our customers. And the grid, the digital layer, we'll be working in very strong coordination with the way we control the grid operations with how we digitize, we maintain, we run the assets, as well as how we operate it in real time. So I would say hardware controls are going to continue to be deeply connected communications infrastructure, so I would say is like, a multi layered grid, where everything needs to be interoperable, and work seamlessly together.

05:56

That's a bold vision. Now, as a utility, let's just say I'm an investor owned utility. And where do I even start? I mean, this. This has multi layers. And I don't know how to, can I do it incrementally? Can I? Does it have to be sort of all or nothing? How do you approach a project like that?

06:20

There is an incremental side to it, because we're we're building and transforming an infrastructure that has about 100 years, and that we're not going to restart from scratch. But it depends very much every system will have challenges that come first. So I would say systems with a lot of PV, decentralized resources will need to modernize the distribution grid, that comes from advanced energy management systems for distribution, for casting observability control. In many cases, where we have offshore, as well as the big wind offshore, you're going to have to bring this off sea infrastructure, the super grids and connect them to the shore. And that is a whole new challenge that needs to be addressing. And in all cases, we're transforming the physics of the grid. So making sure we have a stable system that we provide, somehow the same type of ability for the work that are operable operability of the grid as we had in the past, is going to be something that will be key across all the different systems.

07:29

And maybe it's me, but it's, it's challenging to know, because if you know the physical realities in the field, and I think of all the relays I think of all of the the equipment that's out there, in these boxes that are in the there's a box over there, and then 20, there's there's boxes everywhere, and to be able to do it effectively. And modernize the grid is monumental. And of course, you need to do it incrementally. I don't know how you and of course, the cost. I'm not gonna, I'm not gonna go out there and say, Hey, I gotta change this relay, I'll change that relay. And I just didn't just change relays. That doesn't make sense if that if, if you don't have that overall strategic vision of where you're trying to take that grid,

08:18

I think it's important to have this transformation roadmap and understand what are the different areas to modernize. And the strategy to do that modernization of protection and control is a critical piece of this evolutions to advanced software tools that are helping to orchestrate the grid. So this is very much areas where the customers are focusing quite a lot. And then in many cases, we are connecting with technology, high voltage, DC, bikes, devices to help stabilize the grid. So I would say this is a journey that we're only together.

08:54

That's an understatement, because I and you have to get it right. You don't have many bites at the apple, shall I say? Because if if, if I as a consumer have flickering lights, I'm not happy at somebody's going to know about it. And I'm not the only one that has flickering lights. And so you have to get it right the first time. How do you address the issue of just technology? There's a velocity that exists here today. You know, here's, here's version one, and then next week, there's going to be version 20. But whatever that looks like, and it's like one week, how do you how do you? How do you bake that into the strategy? You're saying, Hey, I just bought this and it's already obsolete. I need it. You know, how do you do that?

09:43

I think what we're trying to go to the customers is really having solutions that go from the monolithic solutions where you as you say you will need to replace everything into modularized solutions, microservices, ways that you can patch for example, cybersecurity up Rate software upgrade, remote device management. So all of these are critical things to enable the transformation, while making sure that we keep the cost and that customers will still be able to operate this grid that is becoming different. With many more devices connected devices that you need to visualize, you need to control you need to manage, making sure that we did this by facilitating that task.

10:28

Because as you continue to digitize this, this grid that we glossed over briefly, but there's that cybersecurity component, this is critical infrastructure, it has to be done delicately, I would imagine done. That's just one guy's opinion. But to be able to do it, and do it correctly, you have to secure those devices for you got an issue.

10:58

This is definitely something that industry has been working on ready for quite a long time, because digitization of the grid is not something new, and starting and it is in a way a new vulnerability to the grid. So something we need to control. And there's been quite a lot of work in terms of standards in terms of protocols in terms of architecture of systems to enable the cybersecurity, as well as quite a lot of investment to making sure that we have products that are secure by design, and that we can easily upgrade compatible systems because it's it's a constant, constant changing race, I would say

11:37

it's dynamic. There's no doubt about it. It's to some extent, it's like nailing jello to the wall. Because it's not just GE there are other companies that are creating new use cases that are coming up with new technology, new innovation, and and how do we how do we manage that properly? Wow,

12:00

this is definitely something we are working on. As an industry. There's an ecosystem of partners and ecosystem of solutions. And it's definitely not a problem that one company can claim to solve on its own and provide a one solution fits all. It's really a joint effort.

12:17

So you bring up an interesting point. And I've mentioned this, I think, although the challenges of the pandemic are obvious, don't get me wrong, I got God. But then there's this other side of the pandemic, where it really amplified the need for us to collaborate, where we don't have all the answers. And I need, I need trusted people like GE and others to come up with a solution. That makes sense. And I saw I don't like the bad side. But I think the good side is people realize I can't do it myself.

12:53

That's really something we've been becoming very clear to the industry, which is that collaboration will be absolutely critical for us going forward collaboration with customers collaboration, even between competitors, to making sure that we said technology fast, and we work on the solutions. And I would say that innovation collaborations, we have launched a Digital Innovation Lab, where we're working with customers on these future use cases, incubating solutions with making it very concrete going from the slides to use cases to test cases, to demos, and then expanding it and I see that this is something that we need to continue doing foreign we will bring Firstly, we really need to collaborate much earlier with our customers on technology.

13:41

Yeah. Yes. Because if you don't, and I make this recommendation, if you're thinking about getting involved, you need to do it now. Now. In fact, you need to do it yesterday, because you're gonna be behind the eight ball so quickly, because of people like you and G, you know, that you're just you're just constantly saying, this is the way we need to go. And it's always a human equation, right? Like the technology is the technology. It's that human element. All right. How do people get a hold of you? Because they need to get a hold of you. Because you're that good?

14:20

I wouldn't say but I'm quite available. I'm quite active on social network and very connected to the industry communities, research environment. So I think it's easy to get ahold of the

14:33

guy don't come complaining to me because I know it's gonna be out on industrial talk. That's one. So that's Vera Silva, CTO GE grid solutions. Absolute stellar. Your guy bad.

14:46

Welcome to the industrial talk podcast with Scott Mackenzie. Scott is a passionate industry professional dedicated to transferring cutting edge industry focused innovations and trends while highlighting the men and women who would keep the world moving. So put on your hard hat, grab your murdy foods,

00:21

and let's go Alright, once again, thank you very much for joining industrial taka platform. This platform industrial talk platform is dedicated to industry heroes all around the world because you're a bold, brave, dare greatly collaborate, solve problems, making my life better and making a world a better place to live. Thank you. That's why we celebrate you. On this episode. We are talking LNG we are talking about development. We're talking about everything. Utilities, energy, you name it with Clair, Marcia. No, I know her as Clair Hebert. Marceaux was her last name. And she brings the lumber she has tremendous, tremendous experience. She's She's a firecracker. Let's get cracking. Yeah, Clair is wonderful. Now if you ever come down here to Southwest Louisiana, you'll notice that there's some LNG terminals. And if you've never seen an LNG terminal, put that on your bucket list because I gotta tell you, I remember the first time I saw an LNG terminal, I think I was fishing. And we were tootling around and about. And you realize the incredible engineering that went into building an LNG terminal, it's you can't stop staring at it. It is massive. And it is an amazing feat. And they are delivering and providing services that are just so needed specially in today's market. But Clair knows everything about it. She's from Southwest, Louisiana, she's been involved with a lot of the economic developments associated with LNG terminals, she's got a utility pedigree, second to none, she knows what's going on. She's an amazing professional, and definitely a paper and pencil conversation in a big way. Now, before we get into that conversation, I gotta put this, put this out there I will, or we will be on site at IMTS, which is the I want to say international manufacturing and technology show that is September 12, through the 17th McCormick Place Chicago, Illinois. And it is if you're in manufacturing, you need to be there. If you are interested in manufacturing solutions, and how to create a more resilient manufacturing, process business, whatever it might be, you need to be there. That is the I M T s conference, September 12, through 17 McCormick Place. And if you want to talk to me, if you're gonna say, Scott, I do but I want to make sure that I that I can connect with you. I'll be there be there on the floor. And we're going to be interviewing a lot of the great professionals that are impacting in a positive way. All of the stuff that's taking place in manufacturing. So put that on your calendar importante. All right. The other thing I want to just sort of point out so

03:27

Arduino ARDU i n o. R do we know they are a new, a new sponsor with industrial talk. So I'm out at their website. And one of the things that I'm always interested in is how do you bring this incredible digital transformation solution to small to mid sized businesses so that they can benefit from all of the wonderful things that are taking place within industrial in digital transformation. Arduino has the solution. And and there are they've been around for a long time they have tremendous street cred they've got an open source solution for you as a manufacturing you and industry if you need to end they've got the resource think at the bench to be able to help you determine and decide what is important to your organism to your line, whatever your organization so it's it's important because the reality is is that you need to be a part of this digital transformation journey and you need to find trusted individuals, trusted companies are doing you know that's a r d u i n o the website is a rduino.cc Find out more. I mean I'm out there on their website and I'm an every time I have a conversation with them. I just sort of route around their website. They've got everything, all the education that you need. Arduino big time. You eat them. All right, let's get on with conversation. Clair reached out, I worked with Clair in the past. And it was a great experience she is she has the finger on the pulse of everything that's sort of happening here and in Louisiana from a development perspective, and just tremendous pedigree when it comes to energy, utilities, and she knows exactly what's going on paper and pencil Most definitely. And reach out to her. I highly just just just gotta go. It'll be out on industrial talk, trust me. But you just got to go to her LinkedIn profile, reach out to her and and be a part of her network because she, she really does. She delivers value added value content, valued insights. And again, if we are about education, and collaborating and innovating, you need to constantly connect with people like Clair. All right, let's get on. Enjoy the conversation with Clair. Clair, welcome to industrial talk. Thank you for reconnecting with me. God, God, it was exciting listeners share this out of the blue. Clair just reached out. And like like it just a flood of history just sort of went right into my head, Clair, thank you for doing that.

06:20

Thank you for welcoming me. It was really good to reconnect with you. I appreciate it brought back some really good memories. Yeah.

06:27

Yeah. What was it was like LNG stuff. What was our What was our connection? I can't remember.

06:34

It was development of various project ideas in in Southwest Louisiana and part of the energy transition revolution, whatever you want to refer to it, as I'm happy to consider, but yeah, just working on projects and finding ways to amplify what was happening, and it's still happening.

06:53

And it's happening like crazy. Do you find and I'm sorry, for digressing, listeners, we're gonna get into the conversation, however. Is the capital available out there? I mean, is the money sort of flown down here in Louisiana, or

07:08

all signs point to yes, projects or projects are still under development. You know, we've got roughly 50 billion already in the ground projects that are exporting liquefied natural gas. Each day, it changes in terms of the United States producing or exporting more than equal to Australia, Qatar. And so it's a the charts fluctuate daily, but we're right up there. And that's being driven by that roughly 50 billion in liquefied natural gas export project development capital expenditure, then we're looking at another 40 billion plus in projects that are under development, they're waiting for their federal energy regulatory commission licenses, they're waiting for their final investment decisions to be made. You know, these are projects that are well years into development where there waterway suitability assessments are done there right of way for pipeline has been approved. These are projects that are 456 years into development that are waiting any day really,

08:11

this is all in the Kalka Shu parish area is that where all this money or

08:15

where so let's be clear, this is something that's really important to me. Cameron parish, Cameron, Cameron parish, which is the second largest parish in the state of Louisiana and land area, and has the second smallest population we're roughly 1300 square miles in Cameron parish. And I say we because that's where I was born and raised and live there now. Cameron parish is home to and for those who are geographically challenged or not familiar, if you imagine that Louisiana is shaped like a boot that one would wear on its foot in New Orleans is the toe. Cameron is the heel. Cameron is right up against Texas and the Gulf of Mexico, making it a very strategic location. It is immediately south of campus you perish. However, there aren't any exporters of liquefied natural gas in Kalka Shu. So they're all in Cameron that's shinier energy, their Sabine Pass facility, Cameron simper, Cameron LNG and hackberry and then venture global LNG with their Kalka shoe pass facility in Cameron. So that Kalkaji past refers to the maritime designation rather than it being anywhere but in Cameron parish. Yeah, so and then there are additional there are projects that are under development there. Delfin LNG which is proposing a floating liquefaction facility. expansion for Cameron LNG expansion for venture global LNG G to net zero Commonwealth LNG all of those projects are in development currently. All in camera, correct? Yeah.

09:54

Yeah. significant problem. And then from that humble location shed, how much of the LNG I mean, you spouted off some stats when we first started, but the majority of the exports come out of that area.

10:12

That's correct. Yeah, if you if you take a look online for to track, liquefied natural gas export, significant amount is coming, you know 78 million tons a year is coming right from Cameron parish to places around the world, the Asian market, the European market since the conflict in the Ukraine, we've seen another uptick in how much is leaving, neverminded what what's being used domestically coming from those facilities. What puts the United States of America in a position where we are strategically secure in terms of energy production. Camera perish is a major driver in in that happening. It's also home to one of the to one of the nation's two strategic petroleum reserves. Roughly 700,000 barrels of capacity are housed there. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve, Cameron Parrish has 78 miles of the Gulf of Mexico coastline, on the northern Gulf 44 miles of the Gulf intercostal waterway, the GI WW, roughly 33 miles of the Kalka ship channel, which is deep water. I mean, the reason why these projects are focusing on this area is because of immediate access to the Gulf of Mexico, deep water. But perhaps one of the densest natural gas pipeline networks, arguably, in North America, perhaps in the world, when you take a look at natural gas pipelines, from a national perspective, you can't even see the state of Louisiana southern part of Louisiana. It's it's a significant draw for projects that are looking to develop energy related projects. Also, our our community, not only in Cameron parish, but in Southwest Louisiana in the state of Louisiana, has a solid track record for supporting smart energy projects, projects that are considering their impact on the environment and the community as a whole. We've had tremendous opportunity to prove that we can be wise about our choices, that we participate in things like waterbay, waterway suitability assessments that the Coast Guard oversees for these projects. We want to be strategic partners, we want to actively engage. And so that's what you've seen with us

12:48

what and for a definition, what a smart energy projects giving.

12:53

Yeah, so I'm not using it as a in a Webster's Dictionary sort of way. I mean, choices being made about projects that include local vendors, suppliers, subcontractors, local government entities being making a choice to be inclusive, rather than exclusive. Create developing a project under some Vail being out and open, talking with locals from everything from site selection to. And I don't mean it in a smart growth type of way, although I welcome that. Not in a an industry sort of definition, simply doing the right thing is,

13:37

and I think that industry gets a bad rap, I think that it's just natural part of their culture to do the right thing, you're not going to get an industry that's going to go there and say, Alright, we're just gonna dig this whole thing up, and then it's gonna throw some garbage in there. And, and and everybody's gonna be just absolutely happy with that that's not the case. And I think that industry gets a bad rap. And you just sort of point that out. This, given the fact that, let's say, you've got about 90 billion and I keep looking at my notes, so don't don't be distracted, because I'm not as smart as Clair by any stretch of the imagination. So you got to run 90 billion is sort of floating it's going in that direction, Cameron parish, wherever it is on there, it requires a a significant community involvement, because many of these companies Yes, can't come rolling on in with their army of things. They got to they've got to work with the community. Can you sort of expand a little bit upon what that means?

14:32

So it means many things when a project that is a $33 billion project, or 15 billion or 10 billion or 4 billion begins to investigate how they become a part of the community. It starts with things like visiting with local permitting offices, understanding how much of a particular parish for our circumstances in Louisiana No, we don't have counties we have parishes. very rudimentary things that that, from an industrial perspective, like, what is the capacity of the municipal water system? How do I fully understand that? How do I integrate myself as a project into that system? How do I have conversations about where the these are? And I realize these are very what might seem like simplistic things in a very rural community with only two lane highways, how do I navigate 5600 people coming in to build my facility with school buses? On two lane roads with no shoulders? How do I begin to visit with the local sheriff's department to understand what some of their concerns might be this is, you know, as a community starts to have projects like this come in, it's the the spectrum is large. It's not just what is the global market for my product? And how do I get access to work? It's all those things. Certainly, it's so much it's drinking from a firehose, but if a project is going to position itself well, and Ally itself with the community, wherever it is in the world, there must be active, constant, consistent communication with that particular community where that project is actually locating and then expanding from there sometimes into other states, finding out what the issues that that community is facing, for example, in Cameron parish, it is hugely coastal protection and restoration. The projects that I mentioned, have all understood that for their longevity and project success, they must face the question and answer it honestly, about how they're protecting their site, their investment, their, you know, 33 billion, whatever it might be, how that you know, what risks, every you know, this every project is in constant risk assessment and risk management? Well, each community that a project goes into, there's a whole new set of risks, and becoming an integrated part of a community, in my estimation, is the single most effective way for a project to reduce their risks. That's the name of the game for me,

17:36

the fact that Cameron Parrish there was, there had to be that one company that was a trailblazer, they said, Ah, this area is great. It's it has good coastal access, it's got all of the little components. And now I got to go down that road and work with the community because I think that I want to invest down there. That was the real Trailblazer, subsequent projects, and the knowledge of the communities has been elevated, because now they know like, yeah, you just got a $33 billion, one down here, we understand your water challenges. We understand this and and and so it just becomes a little bit more efficient from from an from an investment and risk perspective, right?

18:19

Absolutely. So when so that trailblazer for us in camera Parrish was shinier energy with their Sabine Pass facility. And they are they're truly masters, they broke ground on an import facility. Back in the early 2000s. The market changed and they swiftly responded and became an exporter of liquefied natural gas. They are certainly a model, if you will, not only in our community in the state of Louisiana, and Texas, they their Corpus Christi facility in the entire Gulf region in the United States of America, they are setting the bar in so many ways and one of the things that they have gotten so right, is their community engagement, meaningful community engagement. So they have selected as part of their team people, you know, the cream of the crop in in our communities to represent them to do things like create leadership programs for our youth to help to stabilize what might be the the oldest brick structure in Southwest Louisiana the lighthouse that Sabine Pass, they're, they're actively engaging, they're they're pouring dollars into workforce development and progress programs at our regional university, a four year university into engineering programs into our technical community colleges. They there really is has not been a limit set on how well they're they're willing to engage with us. and be good scouts and leave the place they found better, far better than they found it. And that starts to extend Scott. So the, the extension of a project has such far reaching potential implications extends to the engineering procurement and construction contractors, it extends to the maintenance contractors, the opportunity for local vendors, suppliers and subcontractors is

20:31

so

20:33

large, it's almost can't be measured. But it goes into these kids that are in kindergarten now may be working on these facilities experience that may get them an opportunity to travel the world and work on other liquefied natural gas export facilities. But it doesn't stop it's opportunities for mom and pops who maybe thought they would never engage in that high level of industry, gas stations. It's just when when one stops to think about all of the opportunities, you know, I for when I start to wonder, are we really taking full advantage of all of those?

21:16

That's so interesting. Wow. Because I, I remember the opportunity, I had to go down there to look at one of those LNG terminals, they are you can't keep your eyes off of that they're massive. And I think the story that has to be told it is the reality that shinier, and the positive impact from K all the way up into whatever is having and let me ask you this one question. A granted, I've been down there. And these terminals just don't build themselves. So there is a lot of stress and strain on the infrastructure. How does how does it project deal with that? And how does a community deal with that? I mean,

22:03

by by working together by, by honestly and truthfully communicating with one another, with on both ends, what are our shortcomings and perhaps how can we overcome them together, whether it's transportation, infrastructure, whether it's locating the sites that will help to support these projects, for lay down for parking, for access to food services, look, we are density is so low in Cameron parish, it might be five to six people per square mile. We before Hurricane just to give listeners an idea of where we, where our population was and where it is now. So prior to Hurricane Rita, which made landfall about five weeks after Katrina, in 2005, our population was somewhere in the neighborhood of 10,000 people in a roughly 1300 square mile area. Fast forward to before Hurricane Laura, which is August 27, of 2020. It was a near Category Five tropical system that made landfall six weeks before Hurricane Delta, about 12 miles away. We've been hit pretty severely in recent times. So our population in August of 2020, was roughly 7000 people. So we had gone from 10 to seven. And then hurricane Laura knocked us down again, we're roughly 5000 People parish wide. One of these projects at its peak, had 12,000 construction workers in our community every day. Now that was a peak that wasn't the entirety of, obviously, but I say this to let you know that our population about that time was 7012 1000. Construction workers were with us daily. So how does one feed 12,000 people? How does one ensure that all 12,000 of those people have the various personal protective equipment needs that they have? What if someone's hardhat gets cracked? Who is onboarding those people? This becomes a significant strain, not just on, you know, the the 60 or so large buses that are coming in to take those vehicles off the road, but also the vehicles, where do they park? How does water get to them to ensure that they're not facing any issues with heat and hydration? It goes, Do you see how it begins to be an an eye? I fully recognize that this is not just these are not just questions that an isolated esoteric, extremely rural place must face this is Where every project like this is import facilities as well. So it's, um, if if these projects are not having regular conversation with the economic development, community development, local government leaders to understand, but this is how much water capacity we have, you know, these are these are arid This is a 100% unincorporated place. So there are no municipal boundaries. We do have municipal water there we have a mix of Entergy utility service and a rural cooperative. What are their capacities? Are these projects do not all generate their own power?

25:50

agreements have been negotiated? That's one thing. Let's just take that example, Scott. Power Generation. Yeah, so these projects are created to provide liquefied natural gas to various countries around the world. And they require power, it may seem like a very simple concept, but they require power construction power, they require power for their administrative facilities, and Nevermind the load that they require to generate the liquefied natural gas that's going to travel the world and provide the energy to other people. So it's this constant? Are we in balance? Are we imbalanced from the local community and what we can provide or not provide? Yeah, so it's, it's so many components, it's workforce development, it's identifying people within a community who may have some traditional oil and gas industry experience that could be their their experience, their knowledge and skills and abilities could be amplified or tweaked to work right there. Instead of finding people from around the world, how about we find people identify people who are qualified or almost qualified talent? And if they're not qualified, what do we do to create an opportunity for them to become qualified? Yeah. And that applies to individuals that applies to local vendors, suppliers and subcontractors. It's um, it's a very all encompassing, it can be if projects are willing to integrate into the community and allow the community to do what it can to solve some of those problems.

27:38

I think you bring up a really good point, it's not just the impact to Cameron Parish, and how you, you know, develop a project in that area, you can pull back and say, here's a model, this model can be applied to other areas around the country who are thinking about investing in and being able to this is a successful model. And I agree with you 100%. I think that there's no way you're going to be able to invest 33 billion or 10 billion or 5 billion or 8 billion, whatever it might be, without getting that community, the local community involved. And yes, where? Where's the roadblocks? What, what, what are the challenges because I'm all in I feel like, I'm just like, Yeah, I'm gonna carry the flag. I'm ready to roll. You've done a great job at that. But there's got to be roadblocks can't just all be pink elephant and bubblegum.

28:35

Yeah, not pink elephants and bubblegum, although I do like those things. So he made reference to an elephant. One of my mentors would remind me that the way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. And what I would say in response to that is first thank you for those kind words. But anybody who works in the arena of trying to make what's going on with these projects, the best that it can possibly be to, to really take a look at this and extract the best practices so that others can learn from us. It's it's not easy. It's not bubblegum, it is. It takes a commitment. First to the community, the people who live there. It takes a willingness to, despite sometimes there being friction or frustration or a roadblock, as you mentioned, the willingness to work together to find ways that we can agree on things. And I operate and perhaps too, Pollyanna, but I operate with the notion that everybody is my friend until they show me a reason that they're not. And I think if we we approach these kinds of complex circumstances with the outlook that things are going to be better than they are right now today. And things might be really difficult as we navigate through the construction of, say, a 1000 acre site with 1000s of people who are not from that particular community. You know, they that's, I think it all goes back to open communication. Yeah, and inviting one another to be at the other's table. So when a project comes into a community, like the one we're talking about, and, and all of these projects, it's not just one project. You know, success breeds success. So these projects are just their nature, attracting the attention of others. And so there's going to be even more activity. So just as an example, our commercial fisheries industry in Cameron parish, at one point, we led North America in the amount of landings for not only fish and saltwater fish, that's consumed by others around the world, we lead the the Pogi production, which is an oily fish that's used in things like mascara and lotions, and is still one of the largest catches in the Gulf of Mexico is off the Cameron coast. There needs to be a conversation and there is in many ways, with those commercial fishermen, with the people who are catching oysters that are going around our country that are that are feeding people, you know, what, what will they tolerate? They were there before. How does that that sometimes is a conversation that gets lost. And my role in the past has been to bring people to the table to have the conversation. Yeah, the parties may not agree. But they're operating in the same space, and the opportunity. So that place happens to be a place where traditional oil and gas had shingles from every major in the world at some point. So we are familiar with the intersection of industry and the environment, being an opportunity for people to make a living. And that's the thing we got to keep focusing on.

32:35

See. And I what's interesting. Speaking of fishing, I remember going and chartering a boat out of hackberry. What do you brought up? Oh, yeah, absolutely chartered a boat. Yeah, absolutely.

32:47

And what was that experience? Like?

32:49

Excellent, was excellent. Like, come on, you got you got to do that. It right

32:55

there in the midst of that development is the point I'm getting at is those things can work simultaneously, for the benefit of all parties involved. And I just refuse to believe that can't

33:13

spot on. And I think that what you're doing is is really important, I think that the model that you've laid out, can be applied pretty much anywhere. And I don't and I don't think I think you quoted was saying everything is local for projects. It is. And if and with all of the moving pieces and parts and not getting people at the table and miscommunication. That's a risk. So just do it upfront and and have everybody rowing in the same direction and the success. We have to wrap up now. Yes. How does somebody get a hold of you?

33:46

So, yeah, LinkedIn is probably easiest. If someone simply sends me a message I'm happy to as quickly as possible reach back out. Happy to have the conversation and and be useful. I think that's what Yeah, everyone I've encountered, right? Just useful. Yeah.

Welcome to the industrial talk podcast with Scott Mackenzie. Scott is a passionate industry professional dedicated to transferring cutting edge industry focused innovations and trends while highlighting the men and women who keep the world moving. So put on your hardhat, grab your work boots, and let's

01:13

carry on once again, welcome to industrial talk the number one industrial related podcast in the universe. It is backed up by data, Jim, so you don't don't even try to. Yeah, data is driving now. And it is a platform that celebrates industry professionals all around the world. Because you're bold, you're brave, you dare greatly. You're solving problems, you're innovating and you are making the world a better place. It is an ever expanding. I'm trying to get all the words there.

01:39

And you're not even reading this. No, I'm

01:40

not well off the top of my head ever expanding industrial ecosystem of problem solvers. How about that one? That's fancy. All right, Deloitte is in the house. Jim is his name Jim Thomson. And we're going to be talking about of course, decarbonization, as well as many other things. So let's get a car wreck. And I like it. Well, you know, I stayed at a Holiday Inn. So I feel like I can be a DJ too.

02:08

Gonna get a conference? Yeah, it's good. Scott, I think the coolest thing after two years of looking at two dimensional people through zoom and all the other technologies, it's just amazing to be back here. I mean, this conference is always a highlight for the industry every year. And it's been tough the last couple years. So it's just wonderful to have this many 1000s of people together again.

02:26

But you know, what's the interesting part? It didn't slow down the innovation? Not at all, everything's continue to move along? We just didn't have the, you know, shaking of the hands. Yeah, that's and it

02:35

has been incredible. Even just looking at the last two years, everything around the decarbonization journey and new technologies, new solutions, government funding and grants that are going to help continue to kickstart things. It's, it's a cool time to be involved in the power space for

02:47

sure. You know, I always think about this utilities will drive the the adoption speed, you know, there tend to be very pragmatic, because they still have to say, I gotta deliver power, it's got to be reliable. It's got it, it's got to have all the components that I'm, I've been living in for the past 7090 years, right, for sure. But what I see out here is our solutions that are just helping achieve, still maintaining reliability, still maintaining all of the things that are driving utilities, but doing it more efficiently, which is pretty doggone cool.

03:26

Yeah, agreed. And I think Scott, it's, it's interesting, because it's probably one of the only industries where they can't pick their target demographic. And so to have a very small, narrow niche, right, you have to be supporting 100% of the customers in your territory. So the solutions they have to come up with need to be flexible, to look at every residential customer class out there to look at large scale industrials to look at small, medium businesses. And so it's amazing to look at all of the breadth of solutions that have to target those different those different demographics. So

03:56

the question I would have is, where do I start? You know, I'm, I still have my obligation over here. But then I have people and companies say this is a decarbonization, this would be driven by Washington, DC, but you got to do that. But you also got to do this. And you got to do that. And I know the utilities, you're saying, like, what, what, what money? Well, I get this rate case here. And that's

04:17

the key thing. So when you look at now that we almost need a compact between regulators, utilities, the federal government and customers, right, and everybody has to be part of this because you cannot do it, if the regulators aren't going to be supportive and they are supportive of doing this. But on the other side of the coin, they obviously have to look at how do they support the needs of resident residential customers in their service territory, keeping rates low so on one hand, you need to invest a lot of capital. On the other hand, usually utilities get that relief relief through rate structures. Yeah. So does that mean rates go up? Hope not because we're trying to keep rates down. Right. So it's so it's it's a fascinating equation right now in our industry.

04:53

It's way above my paygrade because I'm telling you right now you that the market become becomes Really chirpy in a negative way? Once somebody say, is that my power bill, what? That and that my power went out and it just keeps on going, you're pulling on that string and and with that the risk is, if I'm screaming about the fact that you're not doing the job, then the utilities will do what they do. And they'll say, Okay, I hear you, I hear you, we're not going to proceed forward, which impacts a lot of other

05:23

the progress. Yep. 100%. And I think it's, um, you know, when you look at everything going on in, we're all familiar, whether you call it global climate changes, or future of energy, or decarbonization, or ESG, all of those related topics and buzzwords that weren't in our vernacular a few years ago, but they're all in all of our vernacular today. And you look at what all of the good societal good that comes from the broad definition of ESG, and everything, but all of this stuff is, is everybody is wanting to move very, very quickly. But you need to do it in a purposeful, rigorous manner, and not go too far. You don't want to take the two steps forward, and then realize next year, oh, my gosh, we did that too fast. Now we have to go back four steps to start doing it a different way. It's so this, it's so much dynamic change in our industry that again, it's a fascinating time, but a lot of challenges, but tons of opportunities

06:12

you're spot on. And you're absolutely right, there still needs to be that pragmatic approach. Because you don't want to go backwards. Right? You don't want to go backwards. And that the balance that I see is, there's a lot of solutions out here. And in like I said, I can get confused easily. Where do I go in I eat utilities different, you know, this is a priority. That's not but then you go to the next utility, though, that's a priority. And this is not. So it's almost cafeteria style solutions for each utility. And where they're at. Yeah,

06:44

which introduces obviously, from a solution vendor of which we have hundreds and hundreds here on this wonderful floor at the conferences here. But all of these solutions need to be still have some degree of standardization, because if you end up with Yes, the same vendor having 20 different versions of software for 20 different utilities, because of how they need to manipulate and manage the grid in their territory, then you're left in a case where the long term, getting out of standard and having the long term customized solutions. It's just not it's not long term viable to efficiently manage what utilities are doing keeping the lights on with all these systems. Right? So we're we're seeing more and more standardization, we're seeing more and more use of working with industry groups like epi and others that are bringing a true focus to to collaborate and have utilities collaborate on at least the maybe the 80 to 90% of the solution, and then just have some, I'd say configurations maybe locally for them. But other than that, we need that standard approach. Boy.

07:41

Boy, can I agree with you more? No, I can't. Because that is your I was telling somebody I said we need trusted standards. And it's it's sure there's frothiness out there of excitement and great and craquelin of this that and the other thing is solutions. But to your point, standardizing allows us to scale it better to have greater focus on what is truly needed. And yeah, delight does a great job at that sort of trying to create that clear vision.

08:11

Yeah, and we definitely try and we want to be part of it as the most of the large integrators on the planet today. Right. And we all want to collaborate as much as we can to bring the right change for the world. Right. It sounds, you know, it's a little bit of a kumbaya, but it's true, I mean, that what we're facing on the planet is unlike anything, and if you look, you know, what's going to be? What's it going to be like in 2035 2040 2050, we need the time for changes now, right? There's no choice in doing this. But we do have to make sure we do it again, in a very responsible, pragmatic manner, to make sure that things continue forward. And we don't go off the tracks left or right. And I think I love that, and our industry is about this power industry and the utility industry is is unique again, because there's for the most part, not a lot of competition in local geographies, for the for the utility companies themselves, not retail energy providers, but for the utility companies. So you are able to bring together at this conference, all these utility companies sitting in sessions together, and coming up with ideas together working together mutual assistance programs, which are such a big part of our utility ecosystem. All of those are possible because of the collaboration in the industry. And that's why a conference like this as unlike other conferences, it's truly a collaborative event. And networking is just wonderful to

09:19

I love it. Because I think that everybody understands what happened with the, the pandemic and the the, the problems and all that but I think that it pushed people to collaborate more. I don't have all the answers. And I love the fact that you're talking about standardization, and doing what is right. And good. I just that is a conversation. Now. One of the challenges that I see and I think I want you to touch upon it, because a lot of these utilities are being driven and they have to it's going to happen, let's just laid out, you participate. You got to figure out how to play in it, but it's going to happen and that is around decarbonization. What do we do? How do we progress and how do we achieve what we You need to achieve

10:00

Yeah. And I'd say Scott, it's interesting because the decarbonization journey and renewable integration that's not new for our industry right utility companies have been doing that for a couple decades. Yep. And have had plans to do that. This is a you know, use the analogy shot in the arm I guess I different meaning these days with with shots in the arm, but definitely. But, um, but it's definitely a time where we're able to look at now, how do we make sure we're coming together and again, working together for a better world long term. And I think that the solutions here around the conference, and I walked around and talked to solution providers and and other integrators for that matter, and everything everyone has now at a common journey that they're on. And everyone is focused on this. And the industry has, again, been doing this for decades gets a little bit of a bad rap, as we know, because people think, well, it's it's coal production. But no, it's that is some of it. That's the reality what it's been. But that's there's already a systemic progress plan in place to get off that, it's just that we're looking at now pulling the that end data in and planting that flag, maybe somewhere between 2035 2050 depending you know, what utility it is and what you might have, in terms of geography ways you can help that will be unique, and you might have hydro opportunities, but not all utilities have that. So they're gonna be more in, in solar and wind, with wind and areas like that. So it's again, it's a it's an exciting journey, but it's a lot of work to be done. And oh, by the way, it's not cheap. Right. So at the end of the day, that's that's a whole other conversation. Yeah. At the end of the day, you know, this is somebody's paying for this. See? And what's interesting,

11:29

we start talking about evey. Okay, cool. That's cool. Yep. And then I all I can think of these heavy trucks, these boom trucks that go to, you know, respond. And I said, how do you how do you electrify that truck?

11:40

But and you do, though, so fleet electrification, for even all the way up to class eight, vehicles, semis, and everything that's real. And that's happening, and it's moving. Obviously, the supply chain challenges these days, make it make it a little bit tougher for some of the components that are required some of the heavy metals that are in other parts of the world, the horrific stuff going on. In Ukraine, I mean, we sourced a lot of a lot of raw materials from there, obviously, components for renewables. So it's a it's definitely a challenging time. But the industry is pushing forward, man, every everyone's in this together. And it's, it's cool to see that our industry, everyone always comes together. Again, when you think of responding to storms, and the way that utilities have their folks drive across the country and just help get the power back on. This is, this is our industry. And so working together to solve a global situation, such as looking at climate change, and everything and going all in on it. That's not new for utility companies, utility companies have always done that is what makes the industry so so great to work in.

12:32

So a past life, I used to negotiate all the power purchase agreements, right? We were talking about that. And that's been going on for years. And even and even pushing the envelope when we made mistakes by trust me, we made mistakes. There's and they still exist today. But but but it's it's I'm a big fan of just moving forward. If you have to fail, you fail quickly, and then you adjust and you move forward, and you just keep on moving forward, because that's the only way. And a lot of these companies. The challenge I always see is how do you Deloitte, you and others are, are there's a velocity with this innovation, there's a velocity with this movement. But I'm still sort of old school, and I'm going to sort of take my time. And so like, there's like this timing issue. Like you're blazing the trail out here, but I'm where I'm at right here.

13:24

Yep. Yep. And it's and that's reality, right? And then it's the but, again, I think the key difference now is there'll be some things in the past even 20 years ago, and EVS started to come out when we had gas prices going up. Some people looking at him, right. And there's a big demand on certain models of cars, you couldn't get them and then things kind of quieted down and got back to normal. This one's this one is not going to go in reverse. So this No, no, no, no, no, no decarbonization. It's not a fluke. It's not a trend. It's just the way it is. So I think everybody, all the solution providers here, all the utilities that are here, they're all here because everyone's in this together. And they work so well together and they collaborate so well together. It's it's wonderful.

14:00

It is it really is rad, and I agree with you 100%. And yeah, I want I want to own decarbonization as a, I want to own that word so that I can pay for it. Because everybody is doggone talking about it. And they're trying to come up with some pretty major solutions. There you go. Love it. See you live in that world. I just talk in the world, but you live in the world

14:20

of come on back. Come on back has got the waters for climbing up holes again.

14:25

You want to have a heart attack. Anyway, Hey, how did people get a hold of you, Jim?

14:31

So Easiest way is through if you go to deloitte.com that's the easiest way to to reach me. And there's an industry tab there go under energy and look under power and utilities. And there's my smiling face.

We're going to be talking to a gentleman by the name of john a glass Meyer, and he is with Hitachi ABB power grid. And we're gonna get we're going to start this series and we're going to be talking about what it looks like this brave new future and you know, I turn on my lights and it happens. He's got a great story to tell, let's get cracking. Yep. Okay, you know, I love this stuff. Old lineman as myself. I remembered that, you know, it was pretty simple back then when you'd have these big old dog on generators put right at the edge, typically, Bywater whatever, pushing power and and it was pretty straightforward. And and now we're venturing into a brave new world for power generation, utility, grid management, and how do you pull all that stuff together and make it a product that we who we take for granted. So I walk into a room flip on a light switch? Boop, it happens. And john, with Hitachi ABB power grid, and and others are asking those questions because it is very cool. Before we get into the interview, I want to make sure that you have these two events on your calendar. The first one is IoT solutions World Congress, this is October 5, through the seventh, I am hopefully broadcasting from that location at the at that time, spectacular event brought to you by the industrial internet Consortium, and Farah, Barcelona, both organizations put on a great event, let's get our life back in order. The next one is the manufacturing and technology show this is November 9, through the 11th, it's up in the beautiful town of Cleveland, put that on your bucket list, because it is a great location. And they're gonna bring about some great, you know, information about manufacturing technology. And once again, let's get our life back in order because this is a special time. Alright, let's get on with john. Now, again, john brings up I don't know, a semi load of experience within power grid. And of course, when we start talking about attaching additional grip, when we're starting to talk about what is taking place within a lot of the the management of fossil fuels versus energy and, and vice versa, and what do we do? And how do we do it? How do we and and the market saying, hey, I want more of this? What do we do? How do we respond? How do we ensure that the quality of our power is there, because we've got all this technology and, and yet, be able to implement renewables re implement the innovation that is taking place out there. You know, john and his team at Hitachi ABB are doing it. Now we're going to be doing a little quick cast because this is heavy stuff. And we want to make sure that we can consume it. So these are about 10 minutes or less, give or take a few now we're going to be talking on this particular conversation about the grid edge. So enjoy. JOHN, welcome to the industrial talk podcast. I'm looking forward to this conversation because listeners, I'm a big geek when it comes to anything utility anything generation. And, and john brings, well, all of that. How are you doing, john?

04:26

Great. Thanks, Scott for having me here. I'm I'm I can't say that as excited as you but I'm pretty darn excited. Wow,

04:34

man, you're gonna bring me down now. All of a sudden, I bring you down. No, yeah, I was just sorry. No, you didn't give me a break. All right. For the listeners out there. Give us a little background a little 411 on who john is.

04:45

So I am a senior advisor in grid edge solutions with Hitachi ABB power grids. And you may be wondering what on earth grid edge solutions is I believe we're going to talk about that today. So I won't I won't spend too much time but don't. Don't blow it. But the I also so I worked for Hitachi power grids as well as I'm professor, affiliate faculty at the University of Washington in distributed renewable power systems.

05:11

Is that at University of Washington so what is it? university? Yeah, the Huskies, Huskies fantastic football stadium. Oh, it's it's a beautiful football stadium. Fantastic. And you know, I've heard about boats coming up on it. It's like, hey,

05:29

what will happen is the boats will go out, they'll get lunch on out in Ballard and then they'll boat over through the, through the channel and parked right out there for the games.

05:38

All right, these are quick casts, we're going to be talking a lot about just on topics one topic at a time. So we're not going to be impacting your day. If you're listening. That's what we're going to be talking about. Let's, let's broach the subject of grid edge. What is that? grid edge.

05:57

So you may be familiar with the term edge computing. It's it's the power utility equivalent of that. So the idea is, if you look over the 120 30, plus years of power utility that have brought electricity will all over the North America, this is a little bit of a rethinking of that it's rather than that centralized power plant idea grid edge, flips it on its head and talks about bringing power in from the edge. So it's enabling not just the power out there, but all the smarts and all this intelligence related to that. So that would include things buzzwords that you might hear related to this are micro grids, battery, energy storage systems, distributed energy resource resources, or DVRs. There's a whole bunch of things, solar photovoltaics, they're big in this space, too, if you know that getting your power from the sun.

06:51

For me, we take it for granted that on I flip the switch boom, powers, good lights, good. I've got I've got equipment here. It doesn't like fluctuations in any of the cycles or anything it wants. Clean, consistent power. How is grid edge helping me achieve that? Or, you know, achieving my renewable whatever targets? versus how's that helping me?

07:16

Yep. So that's a that's a great point. You know, we're, you know, Hitachi power grids are just more broadly, within the power industry, reliability has been the cornerstone of that you, you say, you flip the light, it comes on. That is awesome. And that is something that we highly, highly values, we talk about reliability, resiliency. So that's if you had this idea of the light, you flip the light on, it comes on. But what if there are some big dramatic event that hits you say there's a superstorm or hurricane earthquake, with these sorts of grid edge technologies, where you're getting your power is close to you. So there's an expectation that you'll be able to have not only reliability, but also resiliency, you're also figuring out and bringing in some of the automation and controls affiliated with this type of stuff. So that if you want to get your power from lots of renewables get, say, all of your energy from renewables, it provides the power electronics, the controls, the automation, all that stuff you need, you don't have to worry about it.

08:18

You're saying you're saying that if I want to get my lights today, from wind? Well, for lack of a better term right there, right? You're saying the the the automation or the the technology out there? tells me that I am getting in from wind?

08:36

Well, issue it right. Yes, that's right. If you do it, right, you have designed it from the get go with reliability in mind. And you can do that you can run your power system 100% on renewables, if you want, we often look at that. And you may not want that, we like to question Where do you get your power, we definitely, if you want to do that, we can enable you to do that. If you want to focus completely on reliability, if you want to focus on low cost, if you want to do some compromise, or some way to maximize across all those different considerations of reliability, cost, renewable, you know, environment type thing, you can do that with grid edge solutions, they really allow you to do that.

09:21

See? Now that's interesting. What was the tipping point like all of a sudden, you know, traditional utility business model, right? Big generation, pushing it through wires, bringing on data substations, and it's just not right to the house. But it was just big, big stuff. What was that tipping point where if somebody says, Hey, you know, I can have micro grid, I can I can do this. I can do that. But as we continue to do this and that it requires greater sophistication from a digital point of view. Right? digitalization, what was that tipping? What was that tipping point?

09:57

So you know, actually, I think it's essentially I don't know I haven't really thought about it in those terms of a tipping point, I've thought of it more like a locomotive getting up to speed, there's just been sort of momentum building around this. There are there have certainly been some big moments, some watershed type moments, things like the price of solar panels, solar photovoltaic panels coming down consistently. I mean, you know, you think about that 1010 years ago, the price of solar panels were about, oh, somewhere in the neighborhood of five to 10 times what they are today, you look at battery, and the batteries that go into some of these, you know, big you'll hear it called in, in the, in the common media, the batteries in the utility network, you know, if you're getting the technical service or battery energy storage systems, those the price of the batteries that go inside those, those have come down, like five years ago, they were maybe $3,000 a kilowatt hour. They're they're also down by about an order of magnitude. So you can get the batteries that go in for, you know, normally around a 10th of that today. So there's been these massive swings that of course, you'd be remiss not to talk about the computer revolution that's that's been our Yeah, see,

11:13

that's that's hold that industry for Dotto, that whole innovation that all that that one day, we couldn't do it today we can it's all cloud, it's, it's this it's that we're going, you know, data analytics, we're just popping and snapping and all that stuff. To your point, Tesla has come out with a car, electric car. And I think the price point on it is 19 grand. It's it's, it's the economics, that is from my perspective, driving this, if the economics continue to push down and makes it more viable, utilities as a whole, have no excuse, they've got to figure something out. And that's where that's where Hitachi power grid comes into play. Because you, your organization, make sure that my lights don't flicker.

12:07

Yeah, it's, it's, it's all well and good to have an electric vehicle but you, you talk about wanting your lights to come on, I guarantee you, if you've got a vehicle that's powered by it, you definitely want that power there when you need it. And with these grid edge technologies, you can have that assurance, you can have the assurance of the utility, with an additional security layer right there. You can have some backup at your house, at your business, in your community, all these different layers of where you get your power from, and where you get your reliability from. Those can all be brought together under this portfolio of solutions.

12:42

And the bottom line, it's happening. It's happening, you either either play or you just move aside because it's like your train analogy. It's happening. You're trying to get down that and it's only going to go faster. It's only it's only going to be it's just going to happen, you better be a part of that whole game.

13:00

You got to be a part of it. And you know that you'd be remiss not to talk about just, you know, it's not just the cost of these things. It's also people are demanding it. People want their energy to come from renewable sources. Many people are worried about climate change. There's all these considerations that are you know, you hear it in the remaking the backbone into the renewable backbone, the backbone of the grid, renewable backbone or this full decarbonisation of society, electrify everything, all these things fit under that we want to use renewables to power more of our lives and make sure that we can get our modern energy services to things that power our lives from those sources in a reliable clean, low cost way.

13:44

Alright, we got to wrap it up. Sir john glass Meyer, did I get that my Yes, sir. Oh, Ron, again, glass. All right, hot. Hitachi power grids is the organization john, how do they get ahold of you?

14:00

You can email me, I assume you'll pop it up on the site. And probably reach out. I've also I'm also on LinkedIn, you name it. I'm here to listen.

14:10

Alright, dead sexy conversation. We're gonna, we're going to continue to sort of sort of a sort of he's quick Cass type of things that wrap around this whole utility energy power grid. The reason for that is because we it's the only way we're going to be able to consume this because it's pretty damn sophisticated. All right, we're gonna wrap it up on the other side. You're gonna have all the contact information for john, and anything else. Thank you very much for joining the industrial talk podcast. We will be right back. You're listening to the industrial talk Podcast Network.

14:48

Alright, that's number one. Number one, and as you can see that this is interesting from my perspective, and hopefully from your perspective as you are in industry, because this will impact you how we address power how we address energy, how we address the grid, how do we create a stable environment such as that, telling you, it's an exciting time. And I don't know what the future holds. But people like john and company, though, they know what's going on. And that's pretty exciting. All right. Again, we have an event October 5 through the seventh IoT solutions World Congress, brought to you by those incredible folks at industrial internet Consortium, as well as Farah Barcelona. Both organizations put on a fabulous event. So you know, put that on your bucket of Barcelona's great place. And also Let's go, let's, let's do what November 9 through the 11th. This is in Cleveland, Ohio. This is the manufacturing and technology show. Both great opportunities. All right. Be bold, be brave, daring greatly. Change the world. Thank you for joining the industrial talk podcast.

00:04

Welcome to the industrial talk podcast with Scott MacKenzie. Scott is a passionate industry professional dedicated to transferring cutting edge industry focused innovations and trends while highlighting the men and women who keep the world moving. So put on your hard hat, grab your work boots, and let's go. All right, that is right. You're saying to yourself, Scott, what? Where am I? You're on the industrial talk podcast. This is a platform that celebrates you. You're an industry hero. You are

00:33

bold, you are brave, you dare greatly. you innovate like nobody's business. you're solving problems, right? And you're changing people's lives, and you're changing the world, each and every day. That, my friends, is why we celebrate you each and every day on this particular podcast. All right. In the old, industrial talk, hotseat, we've got a gentleman by the name of Mathew Sachs, right, please make a note of that. He's got a lot long title, SVP strategies and business development. The company is called C power energy management. We're going to be talking about distributed energy and much, much more, let's get a racket.

01:21

All right, a favorite food of mine, chips and salsa. I was just sort of chewing on some chips and salsa. And you're saying to yourself, Scott, Hey, your body is a temple. Now when it comes to chips and salsa. Oh, my gosh, that is absolutely delicious. Alright.

01:38

Let's talk about some events that are coming up that you have got to must put on your calendar. The first one is the digital summit. And that digital summit is brought to you by those incredible folks at IoT solutions World Congress. It is the 11th and 12th of May. And it you know what that does. It's featuring real professionals solving real problems, and leveraging innovation and technology to make that happen. Now you can use that, put it on a bumper sticker, I have no problem with that. But the real kicker is that, you know my backgrounds, utilities. So we've got, we've got a side event. So you go over there and you say, Alright, let's see what's what's happening. So you scroll on down side of it. And at 9am. Central Standard Time, we've got the Well, I'm leading a panel of great people, electric utilities, digital transformation journey. So how do you take all this wonderful digital transformation innovation stuff and apply it to that grid, apply it to Universal utilities, and beyond? So that when you walk into a room, you flip a light? It works? Yeah. Yeah. That's what we're all about. And the panel to click on in there. It's pretty cool. So it features a gentleman by the name of Phil carry. He is a consultant with mad skills, former employee of Southern California Edison, and he was leading the way. And the other gentlemen, Michael Bates. He's the GM energy with Intel. And we're talking once again, this electric utility, digital transformation journey, go again, go out to IoT solutions. World Congress, that's their URL, find the digital summit, sign up and learn something about how these leaders are moving forward with incredible solutions. All right, that the other event that I'm going to be at, I'm going to actually be in Cleveland for this particular event. It's the manufacturing and technology show. And it is, it's it's far off. So you've got a lot of time to plan for this bad boy, November 9 through the 11th. And then they have a virtual event, December 7, and eighth, this year. And again, you know, we were starting to sort of build on it. But I'm going to be broadcasting live from that particular venue. And highlighting once again, incredible people who are

04:19

well, leaders, innovators, trailblazers, second to none, making our lives better. Yeah.

04:29

manufacturing and technology show and the URL is m f, g, t, ch show.com. Now have it out on industrial talk, you'll be able to see it, you'll be able to find it. There's no excuse for you not going. That's it. That's That's all I want to say about that. Now. Now, let's get on with this particular interview.

04:49

As you all know, I geek out on this utility stuff. I don't know what the future holds, but it's exciting. There's some cool stuff happening and people like Mathews

05:00

And others are just coming up with incredible solutions that are pushing the boundaries of utilities and, and But once again, utilities want that stable

05:12

that that stable power. And they and they've got to work with a number of entities. It's a challenging time, and incredible opportunity for brilliant people like Mathew, brilliant people like Phil brilliant people like Michael to be able to just shine and really solve problems. Alright, distributed energy is really the top topics. But once again, we we cover pretty much everything. So enjoy the interview. Mathew, welcome to the industrial talk podcast. I'm excited for this conversation listeners. We're going to be talking a lot about I don't know, man, a lot of future thinking a lot of future compensation, we're going to be talking about distributed energy

05:56

outside of the fact that it's hard to say quickly, but distributed energy. How are you doing, Mathew? I'm doing good. Scott. Thanks for having me. I appreciate you taking the time out today to talk man. It's cool. It's cool. All right. For the listeners out there. Give us a little you know, background Luke 411 on who Mathew is. Yeah, sure I I've been in and around the energy space, or what I would call the new energy space for the last 15 years and they see new energy, they typically mean things like solar storage, things like that. And really building and investing in new companies. Today I lead strategy and business development for c power and really all that business mumbo jumbo In short, I'm helping find new ways to leverage our expertise and capabilities to grow and help evolve the grid we live in.

06:45

should mention you know, my previous experience spans from utilities to private equity and building some some solar companies up from the ground.

06:55

Man street cred, if you go out to his stat card out on LinkedIn, type in Mathew with one t don't come to me and say I can't find it because you're spelling it with two T's, one t s, a CA, CH s, pronounced as sack So go out there, you'll see a stack card it is impressive. c power.

07:16

What is that? It? Does that mean? Anything CPower? Or is it just the name?

07:21

See, power is just a name. We were built up over time through a bunch of mergers and acquisitions. Some of them started with a C. So I assumed this is all before my time here. But I assume that's where the C monitor came from. But, uh, but I still think it rings. Well, it does. It does. Now let me ask you this. Let's talk a little bit about distributed energy. Now. I've had a number of conversations with other utilities and other energy professionals. And one of the real challenges, of course, is how do you manage? How do you create that, that nimble that resilient that

07:57

to incentivize generation that is renewable on to a grid into a community and maintain that stability of that system? So with that, distributed energy, give us a little definition of that? Yeah, well, distributed energy is well, maybe going backwards. And second day, we traditional energy is generally done in a centralized form, or it's in big power plants that are typically far away from the demand. And then they're transported through big transmission lines into distribution lines into your home in your business.

08:32

Distributed energies where you move these generation, or other DVRs distributed energy resources into that distribution grid, often what we would call behind the meter or into your home or business and that's where things like rooftop solar or storage come in mind. And, and it is a challenge what you mentioned, I think there's a lot of challenging kind of orchestrating all these little devices to kind of played the symphony, if we could stick with that musical analogy for a while but, but it's a challenge that CPower and others try to help help keep up with, you know, in the end, there's one thing that has to happen in supply has to match demand on the grid, or the lights go out and no one's very happy. Yeah, don't don't do that. You know, everybody's in for renewables. And it's in rightly so it's all good. And, and whatever that portfolio mix looks like. But if, if my power it starts to flicker, and then I go to my digital clock on my microwave, and it's blinking at me,

09:33

no good, happy. Yeah.

09:36

So let's talk a little bit about where this is going. Why is this important? Where are we? I mean, it just seems like

09:43

seems like there's a lot of traction that has happened. A lot of things that are taking place.

09:49

Why is this important?

09:52

Yeah, I think there's there's a ton of reasons why it's important. One and maybe at the top. Both businesses and homes are adopt

10:00

During these DVRs distributed energy resources on their own, for all sorts of reasons, some because they want to be greener or cleaner, some because they want more backup, some because it offers better economic incentives for them

10:14

in terms of Bill savings, or what we do with CPower to help balance the grid with this, but, but they're already using them, if you have these things being deployed in mass already, why not use them to help balance the grid instead of going out and deploying, say, another Central Station power plant, that might be a lot dirtier, but but even

10:38

maybe more important, it only operates for a few hours a year when the demand is highest. So the idea is to leverage these assets to kind of well have the terminal become very familiar with over the last year, flatten the curve and flatten that demand curve in this case, and alleviate that generation. Let me ask you this, that the challenge I see is that you brought up this sort of centralized generation, long ago, it was relatively easy to match supply demand, because you had these centralized assets, big centralized generation assets, the design was to be able to ensure the customer, the end user, the manufacturer, the customers at one end, receive consistent, reliable power. Now, with a distributed energy model, you take that centralized, and they play a less and less role, but you're trying to create a baseload type of scenario for all of these disconnected or

11:42

these smaller generations. How do you do that?

11:46

Yeah, well, I think that's a great point. Many, many of these DDR zz that are out there are not meant to be baseload. There are some that are like a CHP type of plant. But for the most part, they're meant to, from a grid perspective, they're meant to alleviate the peak.

12:04

So things like storage, energy storage in your home or in your business, they're not for the grid, they'll never be a baseload acid, what they could do is when you have your hottest day of the summer, and everyone's using your AC and the grid at peak demand, instead of building the next new generator, he just didn't start discharging your batteries, these batteries in your home, which looks like to the grid, less demand. You know, an analogy

12:35

I kind of use sometimes is July 4, right by me, July 4 has a lot of traffic. If you said let's get rid of all July for traffic, we had to do that, which is the case with the grid, it has to state ballots. We said let's get rid of all this traffic on July 4, there's a couple of ways you could go about this, you could build a bigger highway, right? Very Kintu transmission generation, you could go let's say I'm going to take this three lane highway and make it a 15 lane highway, and you're never going to have any traffic on July 4, the problem is you're going to eat into all this land, it's going to be a little dirtier. Most of all, it's going to be empty for most of the year. So what we kind of do at sea power is and what you could do with distributed energies is kind of akin to that in the sense that you see, let's not build a 50 lane highway, that doesn't make a lot of sense. Let's pay people to leave a little earlier on July 4, maybe leave a little later or maybe not leave at all.

13:29

But that way, you don't need that big highway yet you still get rid of the traffic. Hopefully that made a little sense.

13:37

All on it. Absolutely. There's there's a way of being able to manage

13:42

and correct me if I'm wrong, Mathew, that demand side, there's there's things that can be done on the demand side of that, that equation, like there, there's probably assets or buildings or whatever it might be out there that can be controlled and managed in a way that benefits benefits the demand of that profile. Is there a way of being able to take sort of that

14:09

these these distributed energy blocks and aggregate them in such a way to create maybe a larger aggregation? Is there some way to be able to do that? Yeah, so the absolutely first you're definitely right. It's not just batteries here we're talking about buildings could be batteries in themselves, they take the fact you could cool them off earlier and kind of akin to leaving earlier in my traffic example. But um, but yes, I mean, what CPower really specializes is I would say aggregate and go one step further and optimize those assets. We stand between CNI customers, like large, big box players, heavy industry,

14:52

universities, hospitals, and pretty much all types of large CNI customers when I say CNI, I mean commercial and industrial. Yeah.

15:00

In the grid, and what we the products that we offer to the grid is really aggregations of this. So it no longer looks like a small, little one stop shop for for the the grid and now looks big. In fact, you know, across the country, we have about 4.2 gigawatts under management, which is the size of several very large power plants. So 4.2 gigs?

15:28

It is

15:30

it's bigger than a meg megawatt. Yes, it's considerably bigger than a megawatt. But yeah, absolutely. And so now you now you're able to take that

15:40

and aggregate it. And from the perspective of, let's say, managing the grid, you can control that in such a way that and like I said, I'm just sort of spitballing here,

15:53

you can control it in such a way that will benefit that grid in a positive way to match supply and demand some, and because it's distributed, maybe some part of that capacity doesn't need to be activated and southern, you have that capability of doing that. Yeah, that that's exactly what we do. And it's it's often what we would call capacity, or power, which is measured in megawatts, it also goes into things like ancillary services, like the frequency, when you have plugged in, everything's at 60 hertz, or your computer doesn't work, right. Sometimes these can be used to do things like that, as well. So it supports that too, as well, because it's

16:34

what was this, somebody was saying something about

16:38

the, the generation of the past, would ensure the quality of the cycles and the voltage and everything that you want. But the demand today is so important, because we're dealing with such, our technology is sensitive, that doesn't do well, when it's like 59 and a half doesn't like that, because everything is designed. So you. So you're able to do that, be able to aggregate that and be able to

17:08

relatively easy.

17:10

I don't know if it's easy. And you know, it's something to keep in mind that you have to do this with not interrupting our customers core business. So if you have something like a battery, or micro grid, that's easy, because it's a device that just dispatches and the only thing you'd see is a green light versus a red light, so to speak. But other customers could drop load on only the hottest, hottest day, they'll, you know, maybe move their temperature up or prequal. Their their store.

17:39

And those customers aren't going to be working for a frequency program that happens many more times a day. But so I think, you know, it's first you have to really understand what each facility's kind of potential is. Sometimes you call it the wattage potential.

17:57

And, but then you have to figure out the, you know, the right software to kind of orchestrate that back to the grid. And then you still have to win these grid programs. Some are open programs where you can bid like an auction. Some are highly negotiated bilateral types of deals, man, that's a dynamic system. That's dynamic. That's a lot of decisions going on. Do you guys work closely with the utilities? Yeah, we have a business that really focuses on winning those utility deals, and even utilities themselves. Some are more open programs where you can bid in, and others are, we like to say are close, but you have to bid to win that program.

18:37

Like an RFP type of supplier, yeah, we, we work very closely with them. And what we find they often value is the insight we have into our customers and what they could do that that's where, because you can imagine if we're in Region, let's say on the Northeast, and then we have a similar set of customers on the, the Northwest, we understand how much load and how dependable and how accurate because from a utilities perspective, dependability is everything you might get there, sometimes that doesn't count for them, you got to get there all the times because it will go back to the first thing you're not happy if you walk into your oven light flickering.

19:18

And that's a lot of pressure on you guys, because because utilities, they've been around for a long time. They use a lot of that, that technology, the way they operate, their system has been around for a long time since the beginning of power. And they've they've just the system has evolved into what it is today. However, they can always go back to Okay, now this is not working, our customers being impacted. We're going to pull back and we're going to do whatever is necessary. So pressure on you guys. It's definitely some pressure. We got to get it right you know you're in the energy business you there's not a lot of room to get it wrong and there's there's there's big problems. If you do

20:00

But it's also a growing problem for utilities and grid operators alike in the sense that we talked a little bit about renewables earlier. And we have these low cost renewables that are clean and generally great getting deployed in mass right now. But you know, if there's a downside of this, that they're different than the traditional generation, they're intermittent. In other words, when the sun goes behind the cloud, solar panels produce less than electricity. So now you have this growing need of where they used to have this, what we would call firm production, now you have this intermittent production. And we could go back to that kind of highway example, we could build this redundant generation system to pick up or we could have demand react a little bit more to supply, which, which, obviously, we're big fans of here.

20:47

That's a, that's a digitization that's an innovative solution to that, because you're talking old school thinking, and I remember going to the system operator, or whatever they call it at that time, many years ago, where the guy would just sit there, it's still very manual, I see my demand going up, I could sit there and turn my generation, I can meet it. And then if there's a huge peak, then I just turn on a turban, a, you know, g turban and start popping and getting that demand or the getting that supply up to meet the demand. But here, I mean, it's it's, it's a lot of little things. That's, that's a dynamic system. And and I don't know, and correct me if I'm wrong, Mathew,

21:32

it has to be done through technology. I don't think the human the human side could manage it that way.

21:39

Yeah, it depends on how big and small your pixels are. Like when when our industry started, it was about summer peaks and eliminate summer and you'd have some very big loads. And it used to be done with phone calls, hey, call up XYZ company, tell them to drop their load and go through to the curtailment plant. And we still do a bit of that. But but for the most part, it's gravitating all the way to much more automated to the case where a fair amount of our portfolios now will machine to machine people don't get involved. But you're spot on Scott.

22:11

What are the what are the roadblocks? I mean, it's going to happen, let's put it is happening now. It's going to be more and more. There's a lot of other dynamic challenges existing within the utility space beyond what you guys are doing, but it's all very dynamic. What what are the roadblocks, what are we talking about here? Yeah, it's a fair point. And maybe I should preface everything saying is I don't ever envision us moving to a fully distributed system that there will be central station generation and there will always be a need for that. But Roblox for us is part regulatory. We have regulators for utilities, and yes, those so called DSO or ISOs, ISOs. Yeah, ISO independent system operators. Yep. They, they're there. Their job isn't to experiment with new technologies, right, which To be frank, they're Their job is to ensure reliability the grid and ensure that the right economics and the fair economics so that they're not really incentivized to push new rules out in front of the technology. So I kind of sometimes liken that to a capacitor, you have everything getting shoved in there built up, then it just unload. So we just had one unloading fork, which is a the

23:28

federal regulator transmission. Yeah, exactly. But they came out with only going for 2222. But it basically says that, so ISOs, and artios need to

23:41

need to reward or compensate distributed energy devices in the same way that the central jet is.

23:50

See, I'm going to push back a little bit, here's the deal. I'm an ISO, or I RT or whatever, my I get paid, or I'll get penalized. I'm okay, over here. If I deliver my power in the right way. If I don't, I get penalized. So I'm not. And yet yet there seems to be a disconnect between the incentives to try to incentivize businesses to more to that distributive, renewable, whatever might be over here. And yet, these over here are saying, nah, ha, no, I tried that one time I got penalized and everybody hates me because of that, and customers are coming at you. So there's a real disconnect that happens there. I think that's a fair point and you know it which he need to get it right to start with like, you can't be this is forget about your oven in my life. This is people's hospital, their oxygen, other things that are alive that you know, there's these things need to work and there's critical, critical loads out there that have to work no matter what more than five nine accuracy. But you know, it has been proven

25:00

to work overtime and but this is kind of the this is this kind of the issue. You know, we were talking about challenges when do when is it the right time for that capacitor to load? And how far did these technologies have to develop? And how far can you develop them without kind of mass deploying them and you know, I think where the rubber kind of meets the road here is another kind of important thing to consider is economics. And you know, people can pay up to kazoo for their electricity either is probably the, one of the quicker ways to create unhappiness is to

25:36

have basic necessities are increased the cost of basic necessities, which I think electricity is so I think it's here. And you know, the funny thing is, is all this one of the big reasons that you see DRS being deployed, we talked about it just really briefly, is resiliency. We've seen our grids fail us over the last year, California, Texas, and you would, what does that do that drives more people to go out and get types of backups, batteries? backup, Jen, just Oh, yeah, Jen said, micro grids. And that's

26:08

as those are deployed, you're just increasing the opportunity to be able to use those for for other reasons at a low cost, because now you're not trying to incentivize their deployment, you're purely tap into something that's already there. Okay, so let's put your future hat on real quick. Where do you see it going? What, what do you think is going to happen in the future? Yeah, that's, um, well, kenaz, let's quickly refresher where we came from. It was really a supply driven network is what we've been talking about. In other words, if I flip my light switch on here in New York, somewhere, regeneration clicking on to supply the electron. So oversimplified example, granted, but it is still a real, it's a real time commodity, both both open. And that that's where we come in from. And now we're going to as you're seeing these distributed assets being called on to supply things more and more, and that's been growing it and that's bringing us to what I would call a two way or bi directional grid.

27:08

And we're seeing that happening more and more. And I think that's kind of where the beginning stages of that right now. And as we do this, we, companies like us are investing in what we call optimization technologies to improve this greater and greater, but we're also getting more and more data, and you're also getting more and more decentralized devices out there. So where does this all wind up? I don't know. But sometimes I like to think it will be like the Internet, and gravitate to what I would call an omni directional network. So in the internet, we all consume information, we read emails, webpages, we all produce information. So more emails, for sure, send me an email, you should see more, you should see some of the emails I get, I wonder how people consume or produce such large information. But and then they also store information, whether in the cloud or locally, right? And then if I send it, if I send it, if I sent you an email, today's got it in my route through Kansas, and tomorrow, it might route through Milwaukee. But the network's always, always adjusting. So as we have more and more of these nodes and these distributed devices out there, and better and better logic, does our electric grid eventually become omni directional like that? And it's interesting. Yeah. So far away? Well, no, you're the SVP of strategy and business development. That means you, you have this conversation quite a bit. Yeah, that's cool. Get paid to dream sometimes. And that's the best part of my job. But I'm telling you right now, it is it's important. You know, you're constantly educating, you're constantly collaborating and innovating. That's, that's what makes this time really interesting. From my perspective. I don't know what switch clicked. But all of a sudden, everything is possible. Everybody's saying, why not? Well, I'm gonna do it. And then the technology is sort of there to be able to do it. And it's just an interesting time. And I wish I was younger, because I think that

29:04

I don't know the future's bright. From that perspective. I think so too. And in, you know, in fairness, the grid hasn't changed much since salmon soul and gave 100. And something years ago, God founded it. So we're, we're overdue for somebody innovation here. We've changed how we do everything else there. But it's a super exciting time. And mostly because I think we can make a difference with what we do make make people's lives better.

29:30

And hopefully more affordable.

29:32

ASCII, and you will, it'll happen or it stops cold in a sense. It doesn't continue to move forward. It doesn't. If you don't have the right things in place to make it and to facilitate this new innovation, then, yeah, it's it's tough to keep on you know, doing that. But I think you guys are there and you understand what the drivers are. And as a consumer, I just want flip on my lights. It's on doesn't fluctuate. I'm happy.

30:00

As a clam, that's the simple reality that I'm I live under. That's right. You know, one of my mentors once told me a good analogy are those with solar but he's,

30:11

he said, Mathew, people don't go solar to save money. And he said, you know, they'll, they'll go solar to be green, they'll go to be tech forward or go to,

30:20

they'll go for many other reasons for some resilient power on their house. However, you need to save the money. Because if you don't save the money, they'll be embarrassed when they tell their friends. And that's, that's so wisely. Not sooner. No, that's true. And but none of these solutions work if they're not economic. Yeah, you're you're spot on. Alright, how do people get ahold of you? They might have said, Gosh, darn it, that Mathew with one T is amazing. I want to get a hold of them.

30:48

Well, I guess the best way hit me up on LinkedIn. Or I tried my best to get in touch with folks or I'd read out my email here, but it's it's quite long. So you might do better on LinkedIn. But don't forget the one T. That's exactly right. Ma t h e. W SACH. S is his last name. sax is how you spell it. Yeah, reach out. Let me see. Apparently there are other Mathew sacks out there.

31:18

I'll be the one with C power with a comic. Like, put a little comment in there and see power. You're good. All right. Hey, you were wonderful. I'm telling you, man, futures in good hands with people like you and see. See power and others. I like it.

31:33

I had a good time, Scott. This is great. Yeah, cool stuff. All right, listeners, we're gonna wrap it up on the other side. So if you're not, we're going to be able to provide once again, how to get ahold of Mathew, the wonderful people at C bar. And, you know, thank you for joining. You're listening to the industrial talk Podcast Network.

31:58

All right, thank you very much. Mathew sacks. Thank you very much. Please know, it's only one T and Mathew and saxes, sh ch s, look at his stat cart reach out there on LinkedIn, you will not and I'm telling you, you will not be disappointed. Reminder, again, remind,

32:19

put this on your calendar may 11. Through the 12th Digital summit brought to you those by those incredible people at IoT solutions, World Congress, they're passionate about really

32:30

leveraging innovation and technology to solve problems. And everybody that's in that particular business summit, powerhouses, I'm just saying. And then the other one, of course, it's the manufacturing and technical show. Technology show, November 9 through the 11th 2021. Make a note. It's all out there, industrial talk.com. All right. Once again, hanging out with people who are bold, brave and daring greatly, and you're going to change the world, like all of these people that are at these conferences.
