That's why we celebrate you on this podcast. Every day. Now, we were on site, you can help tell by the noise in the background at IoT solutions World Congress, if you have any passion for digitally transforming your business, this is a must attend event. It gives you the ability to educate. It gives you the ability to collaborate with industry leaders. And it definitely gives you opportunities to see the innovation out there to be able to transform your business and create a business that is resilient to the future. So it's important that you do that. And this is a fantastic venue with great people to participate in. You'll have all that information out on industrial talk to see how you can get involved. That's that's one, too. We were talking to Mark O’Regan on this particular podcast. And he is the CTO EMEA Dell Technologies. We're talking about responsible computing. We're talking about how Dell and his team there are involved in responsible computing. He brings a plethora of wisdom and insights into what that means. And it was just an absolutely enjoyable conversation. So in here, here's Marco ring

02:56

are you having a good time? I'm having a great time. I love Barcelona.

03:01

Yeah, love coming here to meet like minded individuals, people and friends. You and Oh, yeah. See, this is what's so fun about it. What gets chirped about around here is is this is there's there's so many new use cases, right? Which means so many new technologies, which means there's this collaborative type of spirit because they're saying, Yeah, I got this piece of the pie. You got this piece? If we do it together, we do we do something else. I love that. Yeah, I think I think it's interesting when you when we talk about technology, and when we think about technology. And it's interesting to see the certain functions that fall into, for example, the emerging technology spec. So if you look at IoT, we're at the IoT conference, right? So if we look at IoT, and we look at the emergence of industry, 4.0, Germany, maybe one headed for nearly, nearly nearly 12 years now.

04:01

Kind of surface. But I think what's really interesting is you're right can be such new

04:07

and critical use cases that are being formed, or being discovered. And I think from a technology perspective, what's exciting is that when we look at emerging tech, when we look at things like ai, ai being that kind of thing, term for machine learning, deep learning, neural nets, things of that nature, you know, 70 years, 6067 or seven years, I think he's pouring back into the darkness. You know, reading and doing speech in 1956, I think is a deep and strength to my mind. And, you know, so it's been there for a long, long time when we look at age, which falls squarely into the IoT space. Edge has been there for a long, long time PLC. Yes, yes. Right. Yeah. But these are emerging technology spaces that are now starting to play

05:00

accumulates, and they're starting to percolate, because we observed the movement at the front and the back end of innovation. So when I think about the front end,

05:09

I'm thinking about how I consume something. So you know, if that's, you know, if that's in a factory, that's really, you know, how I am consuming information that's coming from an alarm or a set of alarm systems, or it's how I, you know, if it's a utility plant, I'm looking at constant actuators and tenant taking, you know, talacre telemetric data from this and then you know, dashboarding that, so I get a meaningful reading for somebody, you know, the back end of innovation. So, here's the point, the back end of innovations, the lesser seen,

05:39

Mr. Z is the area where you get all of the frameworks where you get, you know, all of the architectures and standards, the, you know, all of the complex and in some cases for some people, mundane things, but things that are essential for the Front End of Innovation to work. So that Front End of Innovation, that's where ideation happens. That's where we get all of the bright ideas and the use cases, but the back end of innovation is the technology stack that comes up to meet that expectation. And where we found ourselves over seven years with artificial intelligence, for example, and other functions of technology is that the back end of innovation has now come up to meet that front innovation. So here's, here's the thing. It just sort of dawned on me, we're here at this IoT solutions World Congress. It's sort of misleading, it's not it's really a technology because every time I'm talking to somebody, it's, it's rarely about the device anymore, right? It's like, oh, I got this device, and I stick it on this asset and this asset, then I get to pull data. It's far more than that. Yeah, it is far more than that. It's the device it constructs around the device process and the process seeds and the entire environment. Right. So we've got to see this through the lens of an ecosystem. It is with Dell. Yeah. And so at Dell Technologies, what we try to do, if we were thinking about any technology, scenario, or ecosystems, we've got to see it from an ecosystem point of view. So our technology strategy is rooted in what we call the strat six. So these are the strategic six technology. So you gotta go, you gotta go down that road. And now that you've

07:17

said, six, I got to know what the six are. Okay. Right. One? So in no particular order, no particular order.

07:26

One, so we've got data. All right. Yeah. So we've got lots and lots of data coming in, through we mentioned already the other lines through sensors, through phones, you know, across open banking platforms, ATMs, you know, intravenous mechanisms that are, you know, attached to humans taking human conditional readings from in, in healthcare, we have, you know, telemetric and metrology data coming off. And, you know, airplane engines telling us about the condition of the aircraft or condition of components that are propelling the aircraft we have, you know, all of this data telling us that the aircraft is flying at a certain height, altitude, and we can increase that altitude and increase efficiency as we do.

08:19

That same set of metrics are gonna tell us if we increase it to heart, Hi, we're going to get for, you know, ice crystals forming on certain areas of the plains where we may not want it. So it gives you that level of accuracy, and so on, and so forth. So the first thing is, we have data coming into an ecosystem coming in off different it's a tsunami of data, a tsunami of data that took different line gets exactly correct this piece of data to talk to us. Yeah, so there's a sense of normalization. So the first thing is, how do we observe the data coming into a factory coming into a hospital coming on to, you know, an energy grid coming into a smart city? How do we normalize that data, and then treat the data or the metadata as it flows across the high and low band networks and makes its way to a control center or a core or a data center? Or whatever it is that you want to call it? Where somebody is observing the data, or at least the information associated with the data? How do we then, you know, meaningfully connect on to certain platforms, private cloud platforms, public cloud platforms? And how do we do that with a level of trust, and so on, and so forth. So that whole idea of data time and data flow and how we protect the data, how we encrypt the data, how we actually resurface the data to do inference with it, potentially, with other new incoming data so we can actually

09:33

model the first it's day, that's only the first killer. All right, I'm winded.

09:42

So we go a little bit quicker.

09:45

Don't worry about it. So data management is the first piece that data management enters into an ecosystem at what we call the edge so that could be the thin edge or the far edge as we call it, or the near edge or an aggregation. See

10:00

so just FYI, you guys love the creation of words? Oh, it's incredible. It is. Yeah, somebody was saying, Hey, Scott, I'm trying to come up with a new,

10:12

something, some words that everybody in the industry will start using, and I can't think of them. And then that guy says you will go to Dell, they'll give you a whole bunch. And all the acronyms

10:22

go, so you got this edge. So here's the thing, that's where you find your devices. That's where you find the Yeah, the constructs that you spoke about earlier on Scott, right. So FTA, we have the devices and those devices are taking in the data, those devices have to be able to scale. If they're taking in data, we got to be able to normalize that data so that data can speak to each other. So if you're in a factory, you got ZigBee, Wi Fi, Modbus, kambos, all these different languages and different protocols, we normalize the data, and we land that onto a construct where we can do some sort of level of analytics. This is where we dropped a function of artificial intelligence down onto the edge device. So now we have three pillars, we have data and data management, we have the edge, we have AI, and remember, AI is only kind of the term for machine learning, deep learning it is it is it's like it's all of a sudden, like IOT is just everything. Right? Exactly. It's your miscellaneous file. So in the context of IoT, what we're interested in now is machine intelligence, right? So understanding what alarms are telling us understanding what processes are, how processes are running, and so on, and so forth. And we're moving that data again. So as we move the data, how do how much level of trust, what's the level of scoring, can we attribute to that data as it comes in? So then we're into a conversation around not just security, not just, you know, identity access management, or roles based access control, but we're now into a conversation around, you know, if I was to score this data coming into the ecosystem, based on what I know about its origin are based on what a machine through the machine intelligence pillar is telling me? Where would that score between zero and 10. So if it's a boob seven, fine on she flows, it's coming in through the ecosystem below seven, right, they want to do another level of interrogation. This is how the real concept of of security, which is that fourth pillar, so we've had data management and movement and flow of the data throughout an entire ecosystem, from the edge into the core. And out onto public cloud platforms, we have the edge constructs, which are compute devices, which interact with the devices that are sitting out PLCs, and alarms and everything else out in any given factory, we have the artificial intelligence functions, which sit across these devices in a distributed way, and do their certain level and layer of analytics. And then we have the movement of that data and the security and trust level of that. And then we have the digital fabric that is or will flow through over time. And that's really there's movement into 5g slash six g and what's coming in those spaces. So we have a digital fabric moving all of this data across it. What's the digital infrastructure that we put on top of this, that, essentially is cloud architecture? So we're moving cloud architecture away from the public cloud platforms? Not away from them, but we're extending from the public cloud platforms? Private Cloud and out now to edge cloud? Yeah, see, see. Go ahead. And they are the six pillars. You've got data management. Yeah. Hive edge. You have security. Ai, ai. Security? Yeah. 5g. Yeah.

13:31

And across those six pillars, we create our technology strategy. I go forward, there it is. Are we thinking technology?

13:39

I'm winded too. But I'm winded just because that was exceptional. Thank you. That was exceptional. I get every I wake up every day when it's because yeah, but it's crazy. You're so passionate about it. I love this stuff. No.

13:56

Do people sort of run away from you? If you start, hey, here comes becomes mark, he's gonna start talking, Hey, give him a Guinness now stat.

14:07

Yeah, they do. People do run away from me, just for technology reasons. But, you know, look, I mean, apart from the fun side of this, and there's lots and lots of fun, you got to enjoy doing what you do. And you got to, you know, you've got to buy into and get passionate about, you know, what you do and how you do it? Yes. Well, you know, I'm here this week to talk about responsible computing, and the launch of that consortium in conjunction with no Object Management Group and IBM. And this is, you know, when we think about that ecosystem level, which we need to do, right as, as an industry as a society, you know, these new digital services that we're creating and constructing, they need a level of governance. They don't need tight control, but they need a level of governance and they need frameworks that we just don't have just puppets and frameworks around the place, but we don't have any one central kind of framed body or console

15:00

Where do you see that as bringing all of the standards, all of the things that we're really, really interested in together, and it's, you bring up a good point, I think it has to be a consortium type of model, I think because this, this necessity to collaborate is imperative to to create those sort of general guide, guidances. Because Because here's the funny thing, there's this speed, like,

15:25

just in a couple of years, what you sort of went down, and these six points have changed so dramatically in just two years. Just two, yeah. And these are, you know, societal changing stuff and business changing stuff. And it's, it's amazing back to my original point, when AI was born, it was born through, you know, a collaboration between, I believe, the US government and the British government to get some very, very clever people together in a consortium to able to solve problems that we haven't been able to solve as a society. And the problem with this was exactly as you've just said, Here to speak. They didn't, they had the ideation, the ideation was always there. But the back end technology that I mentioned a little bit earlier on, it just wasn't there. And we didn't have the networks, we didn't have the scale, your architecture, we didn't have the energy efficiency that we need to be able to power some of our compute architectures to drive some of these models. And so they d invested. And over time, we would have seen hiatus and, you know, ebbing and flowing of interest in AI. But we're at a place right now, where we can actually build machine intelligence and do meaningful things because that back end technology has been so cool. And

16:41

I wish I was younger.

16:44

Well, it seems to be to me.

16:47

Thank you. All right, listeners, Scott Mackenzie young at heart, as validated by Mark,

16:53

rock, can people get a hold of my brand?

16:56

Red Dog mark is my red dot, Twitter yellow by

17:01

a red dot dog mark, Suzy, Twitter handle right there Red Dog mark up and called worse. You can also get me on LinkedIn. Excellent. All right, listeners, you're gonna have all the contact information from from Mark Out on industrial talk.com. So fear not, it's all going to be there. So don't come complaining to me that you can't get a hold of Mark, you are spectacular. That is fantastic. I'm a better person because of you. Well, I'll probably for my wife.

17:31

All right, listeners. Once again, we are broadcasting from IoT solutions World Congress, Barcelona, and meeting great people like Mark,

17:39

you're, you're stumbling around meeting great people are here. So put that on your bucket list. All right. Stay tuned, we're gonna have another great conversation shortly. So do not go away. We will be right back. You're listening to the industrial talk Podcast Network.

17:54

All right. Once again, thank you very much for joining an industrial talk. And definitely thank you for your support. There's a couple of things to add to your to do list why you need to connect with Mark Oh, O’Regan, his LinkedIn stat card is out there on industrial talk. Reach out, you'll say oh my gosh, look at his LinkedIn stat guard. It's it's chock full of wisdom and insights, that is an important connection for you to make. Two, you need to put on your bucket list the IoT solutions World Congress, January 31, to the second of February. And the reason for that is if you are into the digitally transformation journey, what I like all the other companies, you need to be able to educate, get the latest and greatest information from leaders who are blazing the trails, you need to collaborate, you need to talk to these leaders to make sure that this is the right thing for you. And of course, find the innovation that is available to create that business that is resilient. And you know, for the long term legacy, all of the good stuff that's associated with developing that business. That's the IoT solutions. World Congress, January 31. February 2, I've been there a number of times, and it never, ever disappoints, you get people like Marco Reagan and others that that just deliver the truth bombs. So anyway, make that a priority. All right, people be brave, daring greatly. I say that all the time. But hang out with people like Mark connect with people like Mark and you're going to change the world. Thank you very much for joining. And thank you very much for your support. We were going to have another absolutely another great interview from IoT solutions World Congress shortly so do not go away.

Find out more, again, you will not be disappointed, you're just going to be happy. All right, welcome back to industrial talk. And thank you very much for supporting this platform that celebrates industry professionals all around the world. And I'm pointing at you on the video. Now, you can tell by the noise in the background, we were on site at IoT solutions World Congress, Barcelona, Spain was the town and ad is a must attend event, you need to attend that event, all the contact, and all the information for that event will be out on industrial talk.com. Now, we had the opportunity to speak to Marc Peters, Distinguished Engineer with IBM about responsible computing. Now, you're saying yourself, Scott, Scott, I don't know what that means. Responsible computing.net They have a Consortium and they are defining what that is. And here's a definition ensuring that your IT organization is a responsible contributor to and an advocate for the planet sustainability development goals. Yes, noble, yes, important. And yes, it needs to be a part of that conversation. Now go out to responsible computing.net all of the information is out there, and and how you can get involved. You know, it is an important component. And Marc Peters, of course, you're going to have his contact information out on industrial talk. So here's Marc, enjoy the conversation on responsible computing.

02:46

Thanks for coming back.

02:50

Because he has to blaze out of here. And so I had to make sure that we get him on the podcast again, before he has to get on a plane and go back home. I guess we're going back home. Yes, I'm flying back home. He couldn't extend it another day.

03:03

You have to know that futures contract. And they have so many people visiting the IOC conference in Barcelona these days. And there is also a second contract second place. So it was rather challenging to find a hotel room for another night. So it was easier to say, Yeah, we got an extra bed in ours.

03:21

It's true that other conferences pretty big, too. I mean, yeah, it's pretty big. It's lively. And it's fun. All right.

03:31

We had a prior conversation with Marc,

03:35

Oregon. And we were talking about the consortium that has just originally been kicked off here a few hours ago called responsible computing. I think it's a good opportunity, Marc to expand a little bit upon that give us a little history behind why this is important. I get it. For the listeners help us understand a little bit about that. Yes. So maybe I start with a small story. So I used to be the CTO for Energy Environment utilities, for me for more than 10 years. And I started to be on stage for conferences and talking about different things that we're targeting energy and

04:16

maintenance scenarios, AI, machine learning and whatever new technology stuff. And then I said that there is more that needs to be talked about. And the more was around environment, because it became part of my role on one side, but also something that's relevant to my family. I'm married has three kids. So I also want to have that, that worlds that we are currently living in being ready for them to live in the future.

04:41

And looking at the newspaper from one of the academia. That was in 2019. I have seen a model that comes from the foundation for future generation. It's the Russell Russell Space Foundation and they came up with a model they call for P model. And peas are standing for people. You

05:00

Plant prosperity and participation. And I said said that is a brilliant model because it is addressing the feelings that individuals have. It's addressing the challenges that organizations are facing. And it's opening up through the force P sort of the participation, two way of interacting and engaging for individuals. And looking at the announcement of the OMG Consortium for responsive computing, these four P's are also at the heart of what we want to do and what we want to achieve. And what we have already been doing it the last three years, as part of the IBM initiatives that we have been doing, first of all,

05:45

it's, I find the necessity for an organization or a body like this consortium, even more needed today than ever before. And we spoke briefly about it. And I think that what's interesting is, is the necessity to be engaged to be a part of it to participate. So

06:08

have you done has for this consortium? You're not starting from scratch, right? Are you?

06:16

Have you sort of begun taking the the information and the insights provided by other consortium members and then begin to build this disorganization? Yes. So why we started, we put together a team of 100, IBM assistants were more volunteers. And they participated not because they were forced to buy cars, but because they thought there was a very good combination of technology, and individual interest that is going alongside that subject, and formalizing someone's framework, some of the ideas, but we clearly said at the beginning already, this is nothing that we can do by ourselves only, we want to validate our initial ideas with others. So that's where we started thinking around the council or consortium. And we reach out to different industries, like the financial services sector, telecommunications, industry, energy industry consulting industry. And with these participants, we were discussing a Is it crazy what we have in our mind? Or is it reflecting what you also experience a field. And you can imagine that, looking back two years, two years from now, in the past, most people were thinking about cloud and public cloud.

07:36

So if I, as a CTO was talking to customers talking about cloud and technology, they were just sitting back, and it's another guy talking about Florida, blah, blah, blah, right, right. Oh, yeah. Whereby when we talked about responsive computing, and the ideas and necessity, you got full attention of everyone listening in. And we're feeling really this intense

08:00

thinking that I started to do on how this would be applicable for the Ministry for the organization or for them individually. And that's also where we reached out to more and more organizations and asked, Hey, would you like to join the council? How would how would we need to formalize it? And one of the feedback was it, we would like to join, but we don't want this to be

08:23

an enterprise driven organization, we want it to be more mutual.

08:27

So we approached the OMG optic management group to see if they would have appetite and engaging and collaborating with us. And we found it a great partner that invested in you. That's something where we feel not only proud of doing it, but where we think that we can make a difference by even bringing our own network into

08:49

the did you with that, that ideal spot on don't get me wrong? Was there any sort of pushback, like companies saying, I get it, but we have it? I mean, any any pushback on on being a part of that organization? Like, hey, this is this is this is our, this is our stuff, that type of thing. So it's a it's a very interesting question.

09:17

I just need to spend some time to figure out how to best answer because I have an answer that I will not openly share here. No, because this is something that I can't I cannot I didn't mean to pop you with that question. It would just be something that I can imagine somebody saying, Wow, no, no. Let me do it more analyze. Large organizations have structures have plans and vacancy. So

09:45

most of them immediately, some set that by themselves to structure. The idea is something that they have been already been doing since years and they are more advanced and therefore would not like to engage

10:00

Because this type of discussion, or would not like to have the name associated with others in the same context. So that's one silo,

10:10

as you are working with organizations always have to follow a certain process to convince the stakeholders to get a message on WhatsApp.

10:20

And that need to be a sustainability message

10:23

could be also a business message messenger value message whereby they're looking at current discussions. So remember, that started two years ago, or two years more into this? We see more and more organizations say that the responsibility side is something we need to do. And the commercial aspects are only second priority. So we really see number 50. In the discussion.

10:53

So.

10:55

So the hook is the fact that I think that there's a lot of pressure from a responsibility perspective. And that's, that's environmental that responsibility is environmental on one side, but also equitability. So it's about people, it's about bias. It's about diversity. So the societal

11:14

aspects that come into it. And societal is not just how we talk to each other, how we apply data to it out with write code to it, how do we apply AI to it? What's the impact of a big data set of hyper scalars? If you build up in a small community, what's happened to the groundwater? So there is an interconnection of different aspects that most people are not aware of know that where we cease interconnection happened and the responses

11:44

and also the framework that we have defined. So what I do here is that there's societal motivators, for companies to

11:56

participate, to find answers to, to do it the right way.

12:02

And I would imagine there's some financial component to that, too. There is always a financial component. But I'm not here to discuss about that one. Let's take an example. You probably have heard about the war for talent.

12:16

So where do you get new talents for your business?

12:20

And how do you attract talents, you can attract talent by money? Yes, but that's looking at the current new generation coming in. That's not the only factor. You can attract them by fancy worker and balance. But with a pandemic situation, that's a work environment. So not so of all as it has been two years ago, or three years ago. So what is attracting young motivated people to join your organization. And that's something that is most close to their heart. So it's about societal aspects. It's about collaboration, it's about the future of the planet, it's about environment. So that's where you can come in, when you change your thinking and the way you address responsible computing in your,

13:07

your, your your firing on all cylinders, that that workforce component is a well is a hot topic for for many, to figure out what

13:19

what's the solution, and I think you're absolutely spot on.

13:24

From a consortium perspective.

13:29

I'm just trying to get sort of order of magnitude, what size like let's say we have 100 seats. And we go through the process of what this consortium how it sort of operates, the assets. So some of the consortium currently has two founding members, it's Dell and IBM. Yes. But it's just a coincidence that these are technology companies. So we are in the process of having other please join me because the value of consortium lies not within having a computer manufacturers or consulting organizations only work together. It comes much more from having manufacturers joining health organizations joining government budgets joining.

14:11

Because if you want to have an impact with responsibility, this is about all industries. So it's not just the tech industry that is concerned with technology. digitalization is happening everywhere. So everyone has a technology

14:25

scene. I like that. It's not it's not sort of

14:29

in a silo. This this goes across multiple disciplines, multiple industries, multiple whatever, because it is it is something that

14:42

needs collaboration through conversations and not just that there's a there's an action components that say it's one thing to have that conversation and yeah, you're right. Yeah, you're right. And everybody's saying, Yeah, you're right. But you've got a tangible deliverables to that are

14:59

available.

15:00

or, or will be available or in a vision to be available to industries to, to draw from, and then be able to also, you know, learn, yeah, all of that. So I only mentioned to family members, but we also have academia. So when you use

15:17

these VPCs, British computing society join two organizations also aligning to it. And by aligning, we mean that they are adhering to the manifesto for Responsible values and principles. And each and every individual can also adhere to this principle so that individuals can join a consortium, they can get aware of what's going on. And as part of creating a consortium, IBM is also donating part of what we've been doing in the past. So that's according to manifesto, it's maturity assessment model, to give it a kickstart into the consortium and to build on it together with members.

15:56

Do you have any real timeline? I mean, it's happening now? Yeah, you kicked it off at the IoT solutions World Congress here? What are some sort of milestone events that you might have laid out as a result of that?

16:10

So that we, ultimately up to the consortium members defined timeline. But the workgroups are planned to start next week already and on the sixth dimension of the framework. And then we hope for sure to have the IoT conference here, also as a Kickstarter for other organizations that are willing to join. Just for the sake of understanding, can you repeat what the six dimensions are? Oh, definitely. So it's a hexagon of hexagons. It's built up with responsible computing data center, responsibility, infrastructure, responsibility code, responsible computing, data usage, responsible computing systems, and responsible reporting. In fact, it's excellent, because all of these are interconnected. But they are not mandatory to deploy to us. So organizations can start with any of these. And we have also defined paths based towards one or several of these.

17:07

All right.

17:09

Let me ask you this. One last question.

17:14

Is there a an easy way? For somebody that says, hey, I really want to get going, I need help I need to be able, how do you just sort of make it simple and easy for somebody to get a hold of what's going on here? So I think the easiest way is to reach out to responses to have that Rizzolo material and then connect.

17:38

That couldn't get.com. So somebody else had a.com, click question.

17:45

All right. All right. His name is Marc Peters. And we were talking once again, about responsible computing, I highly recommend that you go out to responsible beauty.net. Right. Find out more if you gotta be engaged here. It's a must. So that's responsible computing dotnet. Again, Marc, you did a great job.

18:06

00:00

Industrial Talk is brought to you by Trend Micro now you know cybersecurity is important if you're on this digital transformation journey, Trend Micro networks has the solutions for you. And you're saying to yourself, Scott, they're going to be complex, they're going to be difficult. No Trend Micro's taken that into consideration. And they provide a suite of solutions that truly meet your cybersecurity needs go out to TX, one dash networks.com and find out more, you're not going to be disappointed. Also industry IoT Consortium. At industrial talk, we always talk about education, we always talk about collaboration, we are always talking about innovation. And if you're a business that has any desire to be resilient to the future, you need to be able to educate, collaborate, as well as innovate with other industry professionals. That's a must. Industry IoT consortium brings that all together, you need to be a part of this community, you need to be connected with these leaders that are all apart the industry IoT consortium, go out to ai consortium.org. Find out more. Again, you will not be disappointed. You're just going to be happy. All right, thank you very much for joining industrial talk. Once again, we are broadcasting on site IoT solutions World Congress in Barcelona. Again, put that on your bucket list for 2023 end of January a must attend an event. In this conversation we have a two gent conversation with Marc O'Regan and Marc Peters, the two Marcs are talking about one responsible computing what does that mean? And then two, how do you get involved? How do you get involved with responsible computing? That's what's on this industrial talk. Enjoy the conversation?

02:02

You guys having a good conference? It's interesting things to see. Great, Tony, thank you. Good. That's what I want. It's all that's exciting. Now for the listeners. Let's, let's start with you. Marc, we're gonna give us a little background on who you are.

02:20

Sure. So first and foremost, thanks a million for having us on Scott.

02:25

pleasure is all mine don't even begin.

02:28

So my name is Marc O'Regan, I, a CTO for Dell Technologies. I'm the CTO for Europe, Middle East and Africa. My background is distributed computing,

02:39

distributed computing in architecture.

02:43

That takes in things like performance computing, Edge architecture, things of that. I guess my responsibilities for Dell Technologies, observe emerging technologies. You know, make sure that future strategy if the organization is going where it needs to go. And

03:07

yeah, there's there's emerging technology out there. You're you're at a great conference for that. That's for doggone Sure, without a doubt. Now, for you, Marc. Number two, give us a little background on who you are.

03:19

Yeah, so multidose. I'm an IBM Distinguished Engineer. So with IBM for quite some time already. Different responsibilities are covering. So I have a day job for sure. But I'm here today, mainly because I am leading since more than two years initiatives that we have bought responsible computing. So I've been doing that as part of the IBM Academy of Technology, bringing together a broad range of different participants from IBM, but also linking up with outside IBM organizations to make sure that we are not just drinking old wine, but making sure that others are validating and engaging together with us in that interesting journey.

03:59

Okay, so let's let's Let's venture into responsible computing. Now. You need to help us define what that is what, what does that mean?

04:09

So as I said, first of all, computing is something that initiated two years ago, approximately Now, and it came out of information that we collected from ctoc hours across EMEA. And we were dressing them for questionnaires, understanding what the future of technology will be. While collecting the answers. We understood that it's not only about technology, but the CTOs and CIOs were expressing some anxieties and some concerns about what their role would be in a sustainable environment, the future, what they would need to take care of when they would have to be approached by the CTOs and CEOs around sustainability or carbon footprint. What about security? What about data usage and data concerns and data capabilities? What about the coding and develop within the organizations, and how to bring this all together in a systemic or holistic approach in environmental interlinking different facets of what we now call responsive computing.

05:12

So it goes beyond because when somebody says responsible computing, okay, you got an image in your mind, and you're now is, is there also sort of that that moral component to it where, you know, a lot of conversations wrapped around AI, neural net, taking my job away, it's just that also encompass that, or is that just outside of the scope

05:36

budget that definitely, so what we came up with is kind of a framework that we shade, and we call it a hexagons of hexagon, because there's six dimensions. And the six dimensions are responsible computing data center. So that's a physical infrastructure of a data center. Then it's about responsibility infrastructure. So these are the compute capabilities or storage capabilities that are sitting in the data center. The third dimension is responsibility code. So how do you develop how do you program what type of programming language do you use to make code more efficient. And the fourth area is responsible for doing data usage. And it used to be called data insights. But data insights from an IT perspective is more like analytics driven. automatic focus how brains towards a dimension, that's why we call it data usage. And we are addressing their regulatory capabilities and challenges. But also what dark data is, for example, producing in terms of power consumption, just sitting on a machine somewhere. The fifth, some engineers, responsible booting systems. So bringing this all together from a systems perspective, and also adding the ethical side of it or diversity side of the perspectives. And the last one is responsive computing impact. That's why we addressing the impacts of people and society. And when I say it's the last one, it's not just correct. As I said, it's actually going to affect seconds. So it's grouping together, there is an inter linkage and there is no defined that report yet reports are defined by maturity assessment models, bringing it more approachable to individuals, and letting organizations and individuals decide where to enter the specific facts.

07:14

So, Marc, Marc, Oregon, Dell, why is it important for Dell to be a part of this responsible computing Consortium?

07:25

Yeah, good question. I think, Scott, it's important for it's extraordinarily important for Dell to be part of this, it's important for organizations to be remembers, also, this is the conversation that's been going on for some time in industry. And it's a critical conversation, it's a conversation that's, by and large, then played down or largely award, and it can't be ignored any further. It's on the top of everybody's mind. Responsible computing, we're thinking about everything from, you know, the responsibility that we have, as an organization, as an organization for Dell, for example, to ethical computing, sustainable computing, everything from how we build our technology, the process that we go through partners and componentry elements that we bring into the build models and technology constructs, right through to the platform where the datasets are observability that data, data integrity, data, sovereignty, data placement, and the use of data usage, how we use data, for good or for bad. So it really is a conversation about responsibility, that responsibility to the technology responsibility to the data to the code arrived a few moments ago, responsibility to ourselves and to each other. And that's the consortium is in place to build that framework and the frame those six principles that Marc hopes to, into a framework that's understood. So a question that comes

08:59

to mind and and and I don't, I don't know, I mean, you, I guess, you guys will know, is every time I come to an event like this, the people like you and trailblazers that are really pushing the envelope from a, from an innovation perspective, there's a there's a philosophy that exists. Me, let's say, I'm just Scott Mackenzie manufacturer, in my behind the times, all I'm trying to do is trying to figure out how, where, where my role in my business is, within all of this technology, this, this growth in technology. So when we start talking about responsible computing, am I behind that? Or is there a way out that I can incrementally sort of approach this, this this fact if I if I want to do this? I've got to approach this. Is there an incremental way to be able to do that?

09:50

Yes, so that they pick up the question, Scott. So definitely, there's an incremental way and you can do it through the framework. You can do two pathways that we have defined So it's kind of cross cutting themes that are brought forward by any industry. So if you're a manufacturing industry, then there is perfectly a place for you to contribute even to responsibility to get to the consortia. Because we think we are convinced, in fact, this is not just a technology company consult here. But this is something that needs to be driven by cross industry organizations and members. So when we have started that or initiate that early thinking, in 2020, we were validating the thinking with outside parties. And they were coming from the financial services sector, from telco business and from energy and consulting services. So that's where we got initially feedback and comments and also from submissions already. And that's where the value of the consortium end of the framework really comes from.

10:45

Yeah, what I see is that it's, it is it's broad, if, if you're, if you're a human being living in this world, you're going to be exposed, you just have to be exposed. And if, if you're a business that has any desire to have some resiliency and long term success, again, it's a conversation that needs to happen. Do you agree with that? Yeah,

11:07

absolutely. And, and And to answer your first question, are you behind the times? I don't think so I think you're within the good quote, the great bulk of the times they are changing. And they are, if you look at technology, just simply from a technology perspective, you have shifts major shifts, tectonic shifts in technology, every 1520 years. It goes from, you know, centralized, to decentralized, and we're very much at that decentralized swing of the emergence of edge. Like artificial intelligence AI has been with us for 170 odd years. Yes, sir. That edge is with us for as long as no longer Okay, so these are emerging technology spaces that are emergent within our tones. And they are coming into the emerging technology frame. And CIOs, CTOs and CEOs have to make that decision? How do I insert these technologies into my, into my business into my organization into networks? Or whatever that might be? And how do I do so meaningfully? And with a level of trust and resilience, as mentioned earlier? And, and what is the framework around for better understanding and doing so, you know, as we look at things like AI, as new algorithms emerge, we're on this third wave of AI and the algorithms are changing. You know, Marc mentioned this a little bit already wrong. from a coding perspective, it's it's the responsibility to how you code your methodology, the software that you're using, the program that you're using, but also the you know, how you exploit the underlying technology, and then how you ultimately build ethical applications and how they're consumed. So AI, outside of just the general ethics and bias kind of frame, it's huge. It's a huge, huge area for taking AI and we're lacking it out. yet. We're landing it into a factory for a landing it into ICUs, in our hospitals, or rather from energy operator into smart cities, you know, how does that work? How do we approach this? What kind of architectural technology problems do we need to solve? And so on and so forth? So it's these things, I think that are going to start to emerge, you know, within one of those six pillars within the hexagon, or potentially even cross merging between one or more of those?

13:21

Okay, so you see, you guys, you guys sort of huddled around the watercooler and you have these conversations and somebody comes back to the watercooler and says, aha, I got a new one for you. And then you'd say, you know, you're right. And then for someone that says, Hey, I'd like to get involved, I'd like to figure out, I'd like to be a part of what's going on, because I believe in it, and I see it and I understand it. And even though I've just got a little glimpse of it, how does somebody get involved with the consortium.

13:50

So the easiest way is, first of all, to look at the responsive computing dotnet website makes it easy to understand what is already written there. What we have started developing together is what they call the manifesto for responsive computing. It's a set of values and principles. So everyone organizations and individuals are free to join through this manifesto, and adhere to the principles that was already getting involved. And some of them may evolve into a full membership of the consortium later on and start contributing not just from from the thinking, but also to define the measurements, the control points, and first drive its adoption process.

14:31

So, so it's not difficult. I mean, there's just awful opportunities out there galore. And it depends on where you want to be within that whole definition of how do I get involved. So I wouldn't call

14:43

it opportunities. I think there is a necessity to get engaged, make sure that the voice is heard, and that we are really going and moving forward because it's just nothing that one organization can get to as itself. This is really cross organization. additional work that then be will be very fruitful to what we are looking for. And that is prosperity, its health, it's about people. It's about planet. So all the passwords that you also see in the press today are coming together from a from a technology perspective into responses.

15:19

Yeah, you're talking around the necessity to collaborate, because not everybody has all the answers, right. And in in the case of a consortium, you're bringing in all of these different viewpoints, these different challenges, and you're able to access this full collaborative type of environment to be able to draw some right conclusions or our head in that direction. Is that correct? Yeah, that's

15:45

That's exactly it. And, and it is bringing in that new thing that you mentioned, Scott, right. It's what's this new thing? Like, how can we certainly go about doing that, but it's also about the old thing as well. When you think about things from an ecosystem perspective, from an environmental perspective, to do a deal, together, you have to take this as a problem in IoT, you have to take something maybe that was born into an ecosystem 40 or 45 years ago, maybe written in cobalt, it wants to talk to something that was written in Ruby, and rails or Python that's just been injected in 45 days ago, how do you get these two guys talking to each other, right. And it's an extraordinarily difficult thing to do. But I think the value and the power of the consortium is that, you know, we have, you know, partners and members sitting. So we've been through a lot of this, and who can be absolved for a lot of these types of things, and who can actually bring ideas and ideation into the different workshops, tell, for example, we would have built a power in some of the biggest, most efficient data centers and cloud platforms worldwide. And, you know, the techniques and approach that we used to do that, you know, started with Compute elements, and how you could actually take something that was one unit pi, and had two central processing units into maintaining that you might be bringing in eight, or even 12, central processing units, while maintaining to power supplies and lack of another myriad of different challenges that came into that. What do we you know, as we take the, you know, the lid off the server node, and we look across the plate or compute construct, what can come next, you know, we got to make room for different components in here, because we've obviously got to shrink components. So, you know, shrinking CPU die shrinking on DRAM modules, you know, taking FPGA cards that aren't used, and so on, and so forth. And then they keep for a better and more efficient airflow across the planner of the actual compute. And then understanding the efficiency levels of individual components that you choose to put into the constructs. And then you distribute that across, you know, an entire landing zone of a data center, or availability zones, a data center, that's at the compute level, then at the actual data center, or cloud level itself, it's the power usage efficiency, so the energy coming into the facility, you know, by the by the energy going out of that facility. So what is the compute consuming? And what do you do with the residual heat? In one instance, in the data centers, quite a large one, unlike that, we took that lead, and we used it to help purify water, drinking water for, you know, the greater Boston area of Dublin, the capitals of Ireland. So these are just small examples of techniques and things that may arise. Been a

18:38

work stream, but but but really, what you're saying is that, here it is. We don't even know what type of use cases that can come out of result of going in this in this direction. And then if you're in is that if you're going in that direction, you discover new use cases, such as a purification of water using the, whatever the heat associated with that is generated to do that. So it's what this

19:03

is, this is it, and I think, we don't know. But what we do know is that if you're a bank, you're going to bit want to get close to the data. And that data equals wealth, that wealth, your your business, right, that's your responsibility. It's your bank, you want to get your compute company, and your artificial intelligence model, for example, as opposed to the sensor or actuator or alarm system. And if you're a healthcare provider, or a hospital, you want to get back that capability right into the back of an ambulance, or in some cases, even onto or into a patient. There are different things. They're different use cases, but the pillars and principles tend to be the same.

19:46

And you're compressing the time. You're just compressing time to from from realization to action, or whatever it might be and then some All right. You know, we can talk about this all day. How do people get a hold of you? Marc,

20:01

oh, people can always reach out to me. So LinkedIn, for example,

20:06

I'm gonna have his direct link to Marc Peters, LinkedIn. So reach out to him on industrial talk, Marc two.
