This is going to be a quick conversation. We were broadcasting on site, DistributeTech, Dallas, Texas this year, and we had the opportunity to talk to John Glassmire, he is this senior advisor, grid edge solutions, Hitachi Energy. And everybody at that conference was talking about how do we transition into this sort of renewable world, keeping the grid stable, keeping it reliable? How do we do that? And John glass Meyer and team Hitachi energy, definitely have their fingers on the polls. This is a quick conversation. So get out your paper and pencil, write it on down because this will impact you. If you're in the business of manufacturing, oil and gas, anything in industry. John and team Hitachi Energy are right there enjoy the conversation.

02:02

Done, it's about time. So here's the first thing that I noticed. You're much taller than you are in virtual. Just definitely. So when I tell you, he's tall.

02:12

Yeah, I see this. It's always like you finally meet that person. It's like, that's not the way I cast out all it?

02:17

No, I thought he was just gonna just roll in about 5′ 8″. But that's great. All right, quickly, the listeners, tell them who you are. Give us some background.

02:30

So it's First off, it's a pleasure to be back. It's cool. Ya know, I love talking with you, Scott,

02:36

the passion that is right here on the site.

02:39

So what am i I'm, I'm passionate. My passion is about grid edge solutions. And that may not mean something to everyone. I'll tell you what it is. Its battery energy storage systems. Its micro grids. It is decentralization, in short, the future of energy.

02:55

Well, there you go, man. That was a nice boat up. Done. Now, you mentioned it briefly, because he's, he's a busy man. So you got to wrap this one up quickly. But we're gonna make it worthwhile. So you mentioned something that was pretty much can't spell. So what what the, what's the next gen talk to us about that stuff.

03:15

So the next gen, I assume you're talking about battery energy storage systems, big batteries that connect to our grid, and will be the future heart and brains of our grid. So today, battery energy storage systems, they're getting really big, but they cannot fundamentally operate a grid, you try to use most of the battery energy storage systems out there. Today, what they're doing is they're looking to the grid, and they're adding things on top of it. They're strengthening it that way. But the next generation, which is this grid forming inverter, it's in the power electronics, that's the interface between the battery

03:52

and the grid. See, that was it it was grid forming inverter

03:55

grid, forming inverters. And it's not just any old grid forming inverters. If you've done any work in off grid or remote areas, grid forming inverters may mean something a little bit different. That means you can take your house and you can run it on solar. What we're talking about is the next generation where you layer in some advanced control and automation. And the the class of systems is called virtual synchronous machines. And Hitachi energy has an implementation of the virtual synchronous machine called virtual generator mode. And it is what will allow I never like to say there's the one key but it's a key piece of letting our grid operate on 100% renewables because that is a technical challenge.

04:37

And because you're smarter than I am, when we start talking about synchronous, right, there's that physical component that exists on the grid. That is 60 cycle. There's a physical component to that. Are you saying that with

04:52

the idea that's called a virtual synchronous machine, the synchronous machines that we're talking about? These are the big spinning machines that are At the heart, the pulse of our grid,

05:01

it's the force. It's that physical force that creates stable

05:06

being a gas turbine, a steam turbine, a hydro turbine, it's these things that spin, and they connect up to this generator, and they're through strategic sampling of around it, they're coming out with three phases. 60 hertz, yep. And powering our grid. Those if you're going to take advantage of the cheap and increasingly affordable energy from renewable sources, like wind and solar, you need the supplementary services that come from something like a virtual synchronous machine, you will need the batteries to take over that key role, you typically keeping the backbone of the grid alive. See, this

05:39

is interesting because I wanted to I'm that old school guy. And I remember when somebody was bringing on a generator there, they physically said, Okay, here it is, I'm physically bringing it on. And I'm synchronizing it, and it just didn't it locks in. So you're not getting all of that all problems. That is a key that that's been missing.

06:00

It is a key that's been missing. And it's still a challenge, because there's no financial incentives currently to do this. You know, there's, there's a whole regulatory evolution that needs to happen. A bunch of the utilities aren't quite sure. You know, a lot of the utilities, I've talked to some of my utility friends, and they say we know big spinning things. We know when we like them. Yeah. What this is, is it is it spinning? I say, well, it is spinning it just virtually

06:24

Yes. See, that's that's a, that's a heck of a hill to climb, because you're, you're right, it's so the real reluctance or resistance is going to happen. Let's put

06:36

it that way it's going to happen. You can't you can't hit anything above? Well, I always like to say Hydros cheating. But you look at most, Greg, we've either exploited all the hydro resource we have, or we don't have access to it. When you get there. And you're saying, Well, how are we going to meet some of these goals that we have, we have grids that are going to go 100% renewable by 2050. If and some of them are saying we're gonna go 3040 50% In the next 10 years, you are going to get to 100% operation meaning for even short periods of time, well, well before that. And it is coming and is coming quicker than we imagined

07:13

it now you bring it up. Another whole point is there's this velocity. So this pandemic, we're doing all this stuff, technology didn't slow down it, it just kept on merrily going on. Now we collaborate we do all we can do but but I'm telling you right now, you're right, there's a speed. And if you think you can drag your feet, you can't you need that solution, it's going to have

07:36

to happen. And it's not just speed, it's acceleration, that's, that's even better. You're looking at this and you look at the way these renewable, they're called renewable portfolio standards that are driving some of this, you look at the way they're rolling out, they're sort of saying we're gonna do a little bit now and then we're gonna start ramping up. And by the end, we're just gonna be, you know, in, like vertical in terms of our implementation. And so we need to get ready for this.

07:59

And again, in being the guy that wants to just flip on the light, and I don't want drama at the end of that light switch. Yeah, it has to happen. Because if you want that renewable, if you're pushing renewables, you've got to be able to figure that out.

08:12

And that's, that's the cheapest source of energy. That's, that's what we're saying when real cheap, solar really cheap. And if you're gonna unlock that, you need to have the grid ready to accept it. And, and, you know, the message I'd have is that the technology is there. we've piloted it, we've even done it under commercial instances. But there are regulatory hurdles. We got to get on board

08:36

Come on. Die little voice.

08:39

I'm not gonna blame the utilities or utilities by that it's something we've all got to get get on board with and make happen because it's

08:48

it's got it's got to happen because without it still is still a difficult difficult challenge. Alright. You're cool. John glass Meyer.

09:01

You can email me or call. You got my email. Yep. John dot glass Meyer at Hitachi. energy.com. All right.

09:08

Thank you, John, saying thank you for spending time in your busy schedule. Mr. Big thinker.

09:14

Always a pleasure talk. Always, always always.

09:17

Alright, listeners, we're gonna wrap it up on the other side. Thank you very much for joining the industrial talk. We will be right back. You're listening to the industrial talk Podcast Network. All right. Again, thank you very much for joining industrial talk, as you can tell, John brings the passion. This is a real important conversation. We're doing a series called the state of utilities in the state of utilities means where do we stand? Where are we going? Where we have challenges with distributed energy. What do we do with the grid? How do we ensure reliability? How do we know that when I come home, and I flip the switch the lights will come on my computer builders will work just right. That's what they're doing. That's why distributor tech is an important conference for you to attend. This will impact you if you're in manufacturing oil and gas industry as a whole must attend. Because we're just, we're just getting started here. And we have to succeed at it. So that's why this is an important conversation. So reach out to John. I'm out as the stack card. He has get engaged. And he's the he's passionate about helping you succeed. So get in contact with John and add Team hatachi. Energy Now, you're saying to yourself, Scott, how do I get involved? Well, you just go out to industrial talk. You reach out to hey, I want to get involved. I think it just says, contact me. And you'll contact me. And you'll contact the team. And we are putting together a series of live podcasts. state of utility state of manufacturing, of course, a state of oil and gas, I say manufacturing, yeah. And utilities. All of them are real important in how we are digitally transforming. How do they impact us operationally, what is the state of these industries and that's where we're starting. So go out to industrial talk. And you're asking, Hey, Scott, I want to get engaged. I want to be a part of these live podcast. Yeah, do it. Reach out. All right, let's crack it up. Be bold, be brave, dare greatly hang out with people like John glass Meyer, and you're gonna change the world. Thank you very much for what you do, because this is a celebration of industry. So thank you. Have a great day. And we're gonna have another great conversation shortly. So stay tuned.

right once again, welcome to Industrial Talk the number one industrial related podcast in the universe. And I don't think I'm overselling that and we are broadcasting live from the 29th annual SMRP conference here in St. Louis, Missouri, wonderful venue, incredible. If you want to educate yourself, you come to this thing in the world of maintenance, reliability, asset management, and now we're throwing in technology in a big way. Big time. I want to thank Accruent and as well as Fluke Reliability. If I go up to their handy dandy website, I'm going to find a couple of things here is Fluke Reliability provides maintenance and reliability professionals, but data to do the job asset by asset, wherever they are, try to argue against that one, you cannot do not come to me and say I can argue that. And then of course Accruent. There. They're about real estate. They're about facilities are about asset management, of course, gaining insights to transform how your organization manages its physical resources. You need that they're great company. Both are great companies, great people, great solutions, no fuss, no muss, find out go to their website, you will not be disappointed. Alright, I'd say. We've got Eric Simone. ClearBlade is the company. You're the founder, right? I am. You're the bigwig.

01:52

Yeah. Yeah. You know, I like to pretend

01:56

he's smarter than me, which is pretty much everybody. And we're going to talk a little bit about modernizing in the infrastructure with intelligent assets, which is pretty doggone cool. But before we go down that road, because I'm going to geek out on that, give us a little background on who Eric is.

02:12

Sure. So, again, Founder CEO of ClearBlade, we've been at this since 2007. So we're not a young company, but we're not old. And prior to launching ClearBlade to focus on intelligent assets and edge computing software and, and IoT stuff, right, but I had a career at IBM, a couple of stints at IBM did some of the deal, Michael, I did not know I was I was a Michael was probably in grade school. When I started my career at IBM in the late 80s. I started off doing Air Traffic Control programming, no way. The DC area on mainframes. So it was a I was a young mainframe, were back in the late 80s. And then I spent a couple of years there, I did a stint at Johns Hopkins Hospital, I get to build patient intake systems as a 23 year old back in the day. And then I rejoined IBM in the Chicago area and sold was an engineer and sales engineer a client server software. So I saw the transition from mainframe to PC. And then in 94, I decided to leave the corporate world and move to the Bay Area and and do my first startup called compete, which we sold to a public company called efficient compete compete Incorporated. Yep. You had that compete. Competing corporate. That's great. Yeah. So it's, it's now proficient here in St. Louis. And that was a very, that's what moved me from the Bay Area to Texas. And and as of a week ago, I moved from Austin, Texas, back to my hometown of Libertyville, Illinois.

03:49

Good move. You wanted to do that? Yeah, I

03:51

did a number of reasons family, their sporting, sporting, and I wanted to put my kids into the same high school I graduated from, so they could get the true Breakfast Club experience. Many years later.

04:06

Yeah, that's pretty cool. Yeah, yeah. The first one. All right, let's do it. Let's venture into this. One of the themes that I like that you constantly and we're gonna we'll talk about it that you constantly sort of harp on in a nice way. Not a bad way. But it's, it's your obligation. You, as a coder, you as a programmer, you as a creator of systems, you're obligated to simplify. Yep, you're obligated for the end user to be able to achieve what they need to achieve without the fuss or muss because I would imagine you know that if it's hard, I'm not using it.

04:42

Totally true. I've seen it my whole career. So I used to be a programmer. Let's put like that. If you call me a programmer, my engineers here that don't laugh. But you know, I know enough to be dangerous. I know enough about what I've been through. Going from mainframe to PCs to the cloud. Bay Area craziness. And one thing that I've learned is we've got to make technology consumable by the masses. Yeah. And IoT specifically, has been, it's such a buzzword. And it's such a movement, it's real. And it's really difficult. And we have got to put software in the hands of the professionals on the plant floor. maintainers on the railway, right? In the buildings, that's not intimidating. It just has to be intuitive to use, and they shouldn't have to learn anything about coding or any of this technology example,

05:35

when, when I started this, you know, media thing, and I did it out as a result of trying to gain attention from my other company. I was concerned, I was nervous, because I just know, I'm entering into something that I really don't know. And then I was just surprised at how easy things were. And and, and I recognize and realize that there are just companies, they recognize nurses are saying, hey, for the masses, that's where the, that's where the value lies. And so and it is drag and drop, whatever, you know, you're not going to get yourself sideways. And

06:08

it shifted to in my mind just just a few years ago, actually, really 10 years ago, because as an engineer as a computer scientist, right? I sacrilege to say you don't need to code, right, right. To me, it's like, of course, you can't do this without coding. And I was a proponent back in the day of these visual drag and drop builders PowerBuilder, visual age was IBM's. And I built a whole business on that. And what I learned from leaving IBM and building that first business was, this stuff was great when I was demoing it around Chicago, right and selling it. But now that I have to use it at scale and these big projects, it doesn't work. Yeah, it really and this is why you don't see these tools again, right. And I actually see the industry making the same mistake for low code like, so no code is is a little bit different. It's not drag and drop and use these specialized tools. It's fill out a form and use, like, if you were to buy something on Amazon, you enter your credit card information, right. That's what no code means. It means I'm typing words to say things like, allow the farmer to say turn on fan when temperature in greenhouse 16 is above. Right, right, right. Yeah, turn up 75 degrees, or whatever. And they're just typing that in. Right? So it's natural language, usually language,

07:28

natural language. That's pretty tough. And cool. Now, you're going to touch upon a subject matter that I'm quite interested in, is because we have all this buzz out there about industry for Dido and digital journey and blah, blah. And and one of the areas is just infrastructure. Yep. That is, it's like, you know, that is a business that's been around forever. And it's just, you know, we've got assets that are 70 years old, what are you thinking? And I don't I don't have an answer of how you do that.

08:01

Very carefully. Yeah. Well, one of the reasons we focus on infrastructures, because that's what the the industry led us there. Right. So as we started selling our software, we were selling into industries like rail, yeah. Big iron, right? into building facilities, into aerospace into agriculture, right. And so when you start looking at the definition of infrastructure and critical infrastructure, it's things like energy, water, transportation, agriculture, right. So so when I looked at those boxes, like, okay, that's, that's broad enough for our software. I mean, there's a lot of criticism, sometimes you get for thinking broad and having that vision, you can't possibly attack all these industries at once. What if the software's not industry specific and customizable enough for any of these industries? And then you go work with the partners that know those industries, know those customers? That's, that's our go to market strategy. And that's what we do.

09:07

When you say that you're going to work with these partners who are partners, like what do you mean by partners?

09:12

So great question. People who know their customer, who know how to bring the best technology to bear both hardware and software, but are building bespoke solutions over years of development, their trusted advisors that know your manufacturing operation or know your rail operations, or know your aerospace operations. So when they know about our company ClearBlade, and they said, Look, we can combine ClearBlade software with the sort of sensors and gateways and it can stream data into your ERP system, your your enterprise, your enterprise systems, right, right. And then we can give them results in a matter of weeks or a couple months by configuring Software as opposed to building from the ground

10:02

Great stuff, don't get me wrong. Okay. So I'm just my, my, my head is swimming, because let's take, let's take utilities, let's take the infrastructure of utilities, there's a lot of a lot of things happen in there. And a lot of people are talking about it. And I think to your point, I think there's a gap and the gap is people that really know what the problem is. And really leaning on that there are just companies that are out there saying, Yeah, we're going to be doing this and we throw it out there. But do you really understand what's going on?

10:39

We don't, I'll tell you right now, I've got customers, that their, their full picture of what they want to do doesn't really get revealed to us until later. But what the partners know, they're, they're playing in their mission. So so we are, we are a vendor of software, right? You should, we shouldn't be in there directly selling anything, we should be working with a partner. And to to understand that bigger mission, right? If working with a utility specialist that understands what they need to do to modernize their existing infrastructure, and then applying the right software products, and hardware products to that solution. We've got great examples, we can tell you all of the reasons why our edge compute or IoT or AI is fantastic. But without that specialist in the middle, you're going to have we're going to struggle, because you've got to be able to identify what the business

11:39

and you know it, this is human right here, if you lose credibility, if you don't have that, that, that that subject matter expert, whatever, that individual that has the street cred that understands that business, and you come in and you you go round that individual, yeah, you're gonna screwed up and and then all of a sudden, whatever strategic initiative that they want to do, it's just thrown it's like, this is This is bull.

12:06

Yeah, you got it. And I'll tell you, our biggest challenge is, people that make their money, building things paid by the hour, not saying these companies are bad, but there's a lot of people out there building the same wheel over and over and over again. And they make a lot of money doing that. And there's internal fiefdoms in these companies where look, it's really cool to go build an IoT system, because that's your, you're an engineer, your software engineer, this is what you're paid to do. But it's not the most efficient way to go about doing but

12:39

that is been the point, especially with the infrastructure companies, right? They have these these, you know, patchwork type of legacy systems that it's like, yeah, I got that one, oh, I bought that one, they sold this, and they don't talk together, and then all of a sudden, you're trying to figure out what to do. And that's it. It's just, and that's just one organization over here that has a different set of

13:01

oh, it's, it's so so going back again, in time, which I love to do, you go to the late 80s, right. And one thing I learned is these enterprise systems, they don't go away. They, these are major investments from these companies, they evolve, right? And you better know how to work and play nice with those big systems, and be a valuable component. So play nice with others other software, other hardware, and be that flexible, flexible piece of software that can tie this stuff together. Yeah.

13:34

That's, that's where it's at. That's where it's at. And if you have any of that strategic to you, let's just put it this way, the infrastructure, the world of infrastructure has to do it, there has to be some way of strategically transitioning, it's not going to happen overnight. It's going to happen. Well, who knows, right? Just gonna have a lot of people.

13:53

And I'll tell you intelligent assets, right? That's a term that we use, that is focused on the operator, the maintainer, the business person. And that's a shift for us. Because we were selling to the technology, people look here, here, your picks and shovels, before the pandemic. And then what happened during the pandemic, is the customers that continued to buy, were buying in buying the value of intelligent assets by adding sensors into their operation, adding edge gateways in but using our intelligent asset system. So when we looked at the future, which looked pretty bleak a year, year, year plus ago, right, so let's go double down on that and make our intelligent assets system better and really focus on the end user, not the IT department and the developer. Now, of course, we can't cut those people out. But we already built for them. So once we built this application over top of it, to work with the people that run the run the machines right out in the field, then And they started using it, then it starts getting involved say, wait a minute, what are you using here? Oh, let's open it up and do more and then we give them that capability to so we just go in in a different manner. Now

15:10

see, and I like that because that is really where the rubber meets the road are the operators are the one that keep the assets running and doing whatever they have to do. And they do a great job.

15:17

Well doesn't happen. Software nerds, right. So we there's so much to build. We shouldn't be building it all. There's other high level things to do with AI and ML and other stuff. So upskill that stuff, right?

15:29

There's a lot out there it is. I don't know how you guys keep up with it. Even I get it's never boring. It's never boring. How do people get ahold of you?

15:39

Eric Simone at ClearBlade.com e si, m o ne. Okay, good.

15:45

Oh, you don't have a.in there. No dot between Eric and somoni.

15:50

You know, the dot gets scraped away anyway with the server. So it's actually meaningless. That's it. That's it. Technically it is. No matter. Just so you know. You can put as many dots as you want in there.

16:06

Make a note of that listeners. The dot doesn't matter. The dot doesn't matter. Was that on a bumper sticker, the doc doesn't matter. I love it. Wonderful. Thank you very much for being on Industrial Talk. By the way. You did a great job at the roundtable. dealio SMF. Be

16:21

glad to get moderators.

16:24

Oh fest right here. All right, listeners, don't worry, we're gonna wrap it up on the other side. After the break, we're gonna just make sure that you get get the right information about Eric. And if you need to get a hold of them kind of get on you. We're not going to be disappointed. I'm just telling you right now, you're not going to be a disappointing

16:38

answer as many dots as you want in there. Yeah. Because the server doesn't

16:41

care or whatever. It doesn't care. Dot person. All right. Stay tuned. We'll be right back.

16:47

Welcome to the industrial talk podcast with Scott MacKenzie. Scott is a passionate industry professional dedicated to transferring cutting edge industry focused innovations and trends while highlighting the men and women who keep the world moving. So put on your hard hat, grab your work boots, and let's go Alright, welcome to industrial talk where we celebrate you, the industrial professionals, the industrial heroes, the individuals in the companies that get it done, you are bold, you are brave, you dare greatly. You solve problems. You're changing the world. And as such, you're changing people's lives. That's why we celebrate you on this particular podcast. All right, in the hot seat, we have a gentleman by the name of Roger boo. Now Roger boo was broadcasting or interviewed all the way from Barcelona, because we were highlighting IoT solutions World Congress, the incredible then brought to you by Farah, Barcelona, and the industrial internet Consortium, and he was broadcasting from their World Congress that featured it was what Mobile World Congress, how about that? Let's get cracking. Yeah, we can do this, you know, we talked about in this particular conversation, because we're going to get into it real quick. We talked about the necessity to collaborate, but not just collaborate within your sphere, right? But collaborate externally, different businesses, different industries, to collaborate to solve problems, IoT solutions, World Congress, this particular event, is a great location. And I'm telling you right now, you're going to have it out there on industrial talk, comm all the information that you need. And you need to get engaged with these individuals, because they're all about the future. They're all about highlighting the innovation that is taking place within industry. It is a marvelous, their, their organization, and the people who are a part of that organization are passionate about innovation. So Roger was broadcasting, as you look out on the video was broadcasting specifically from the Mobile World Congress. And it was great to hear the voices in the activity in the background trying to get back to normal. And for me personally, it's an absolute honor to be associated with the IoT solutions World Congress, Farah, Barcelona, the industrial internet Consortium, they put on a fantastic, fantastic show. So here is Roger, and he is talking specifically about the strategic vision of what they're doing at fair Barcelona and IoT solutions. World Congress. Enjoy. Roger, welcome to the industrial talk podcast absolute honor that. All right, listeners, this is pretty cool. This is real time. This is live. This is happening at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, right this very moment. It is the 28th. It goes on till July 1, and we get the opportunity to have a conversation with Roger boob. And he is he's a big one. He's He's an IoT event director with Farah, Barcelona. How are you doing? Roger, thank you very much for joining us.

03:14

It's good. It's a pleasure to be here. Thank you very much for having me. Yeah, we're here in the Mobile World Congress. And it's been a great experience to be in banking business again.

03:27

Come on, you know, that's great deal. That's got to be feeling good. Because you guys were sort of, in that whole pandemic environment, you guys sort of had to shut down sort of figure out what to do. Where are you going? What's happening? And it's great. Absolutely. Great to see you at this event. And and sort of getting back to normal. Kudos to the fair of team. I love it. All right. Yeah. It's fun. Yeah, go ahead. I'm sorry, excuse me. Sorry, we're, he's in Spain, I'm in Louisiana, we're going to have a little bit of delay, so don't worry about it, listeners. So for the listeners out there, give us a little background on who Roger is.

04:12

Oh, I've been working in the events industry for the last 12 years. I am the founding director of the IoT solutions for commerce. We do this event in partnership with the different internet Consortium. And we've been growing these events since then, creating an environment for innovation and for innovation applied to each of the industries. And so it's a very creative, very international environment. And we have leading people on the industry ball so it's it's great to do that. I'm also in charge of the tech events in in Fira and the startup events. So yeah, been been busy and very happy to do

05:01

I'm telling you, it's a good busy. I like it. I like the fact that you are focused and team Farah, Barcelona, as well as the industrial internet Consortium, are focused on trying to get things back to normal. And I'm telling you right now, the conversations I've had Roger about innovation, especially over this period of this pandemic, period, have been just absolutely incredible. Because what you guys are doing is just leading that way is is true, blazing that trail of innovation. And that is really needed to create a business of resiliency. How long has IoT solutions World Congress been in? sort of been doing this?

05:44

Yeah, well, IoT solutions? Well, Congress started in 2015. So if you remember in our first revision, but then people talked about m to m. And there were some IoT events, just talking about the big possibility of things getting connected and the million of million of things connected. But we had a different position, because we wanted that to be real. So things get connected to solve some different problems. So we focused on how these connected things will solve industrial problems in different industries, like energy, like fuel ideas, like manufacturing, minutes, etc. And this is our starting point, when out, then there were no commercial model yet or business cases, because there was just innovation and experimentation on the IoT. And now our second division, we are very had some testbed and will have also commercial products that could be sold for companies. And since then, we've been growing. And now we have the next change the next important change for the future, because we've been working very hard in strategic plan for the growth for the next five years. And we are changing a little bit our strategic focus. So instead of focusing on content, and solutions for each of the vertical industries, for manufacturing, for healthcare, for energy, utilities, etc, we are focusing on solutions and content for each of the profiles. Because after studying our attendees, we found that what they really wanted is to have a dialogue between end user, as an industry and user, with their competitors, can also with other industries involved on the future, so that in the future, they see that innovation will not come just as a steal, as it used to be so I don't know, for instance, the energy. industry will innovate and innovation was competing against your competitor innovate something different that made you more productive and new competitor. In the future, what they see is that innovation will come from connecting different industries, for instance, automotive industry, the future of an automotive industry is not making the better agenda, their competitor, but connecting with entertainment platform, with road building, company, and with those companies that are building the autonomous car. So as the driver will not be driving, there's some platform that has to entertain him. And as the car will drive automatically, there are some road builders that are putting some sensors and edge computing in the road zero. So the important thing here is connect garage industry, all these people that are involved in the change of all the industries. And this is the new role for the IoT service. connector.

09:09

Yeah, see, and I think that that is an absolutely brilliant approach to this innovation. And, and what I always see is, is the necessity to collaborate. If you think that you're going to just sort of sit there in a silo and think that I'm going to come up with a solution alone, you're missing it, you're missing a completely it is a truly collaborative model bent on true solutions. True problem solving. What I like is how you're connecting different industries. I think that's brilliant. In any Here's the reason why. It's brilliant because I look at problems maybe a different way then maybe you do like in the case of energy right? There are so wait, there's so many ways of being able to bring us together in a collaborative but different industry. I think it's I think it's brilliant. Now, Roger, where do you see it going? Now you've changed your strategic approach. Where do you see you going with IoT solutions World Congress?

10:22

Yeah, we see that our focus keep the same. So we have to be the place where nobody, people need to design the future of each of the industries. But I see that there's a lot of growth to come. Because as we are as, after the pandemic, all the industries have skilled that detail is the way and that all the industries will be connecting faster than we expected. They need a place where to meet with colleagues and to meet with other people in the industry, where there's about dialogue between these end users about use cases, business cases, some things that have worked into that haven't work, and to learn, to experiment and to, to find new solutions for the new business models. So this is a place that we want them to me, we are working hard to bring high valuable content for these people. And we were expecting to have big growth for the next five years.

11:28

Well, it is a topic it is a focus on many, many businesses minds, if I if I had a nickel every time I spoke to somebody in manufacturing that is looking at how do we digitize? How do we venture into this digital transformation? One of the keys that I have to ask you is that what differentiates your organization and what you and IoT solutions World Congress and internet industrial internet Consortium, you have testbeds, this is not what I would say pie in the sky, you see it in action? Can you explain a little bit about why that is so important?

12:09

Yeah, this is blue. And it's very important and very important since the beginning. Because we want that, for us, it's important that people can touch the solution can understand the solution and can find a real application of this motion. So it's not just talking about an IoT platform that's very abstract, and can be used for everything. But talking about, I don't know how we have had different solutions for agriculture, for aquaculture. For binary, we had also for petrol refinery pro board that went into the tubes and clean them. And we've had different solutions in the investment area. And I've helped people from the industry to understand and to have a clear vision on how this can be applied in a real solution. And it's also most of the attendees also tell us that it's very interesting for them, for innovators, to have solutions, to be able to see solutions not only from your industry, but from other industries, because you can see different approach or different solutions that can also be applied to your industry.

13:21

Again, brilliant, I think that especially today, I think in in light of the pandemic, the necessity to collaborate and collaborate with innovative things, thinkers that are involved with IoT solutions World Congress is I mean, you get a better picture, you get a better picture of what's taking place. The question I have, and when I've been very fortunate to broadcast from IoT solutions World Congress is the speed of innovation, right? There's a there's a, there's a velocity that exists with innovation. How does somebody like me just learn to grow? Where am I at? I mean, it's, it's it's so fast. Roger, how do I how do I manage that? How does this information also get out to the masses that would benefit from this innovation?

14:13

Yeah, this is very interesting, Scott, because as you said, it's, it's so fast. And it's, it's also from collaboration, no one can knows about everything we want can be the best of everything. And I think it needs a lot of dialogue between different people that has different knowledge. And with all that, you can really innovate because, for instance, what what's happening in the next IoT solutions world, that we're introducing new disruptive technologies that are going to change the industries like digital twin, or like quantum computing, and this is going so fast and so fast, but it's important to have people that have the technical knowledge, and people sort of have the strategy in your hand in that they share knowledge. This dialogue between the it the OT strategies, these are important they are because all of them are important part of the solution.

15:17

Again, in light of the necessity to collaborate, even within organizations that have identified themselves as little silos it ot whatever, even that is a, that that is an old model that has to be sort of, at least transitioned out so that everybody's working together, because the solutions that IoT solutions World Congress, and its members are coming up with require that that necessity to strategically look at what the value of these these innovations bring to the business. And, and bottom line it does, Roger. I mean, you guys are right at that cutting edge. How does? I mean, with all the stuff that's been going on? If I go to where would I go to get great information on what you guys are doing? What industrial internet consortium is doing? How do I how do I get involved?

16:16

Well, first day, you've got obviously that web pages of the industrial internet consortium and the IoT solutions World Congress. But you can also ask to be part of the community. And so we'll send you regularly information we send to the community with valuable content. And obviously, there's no places that you have to be that's once a year, the event. So we are we keeping we try to keep in contact with the community during call year. But the important place to be is once a year to meet with people of the industry users, with their colleagues with other innovative people and to, to dialogue with and collaborate with others to find this.

17:06

I'll tell you right now, listeners, I've been very fortunate to be at the IoT solutions World Congress in Barcelona. And it is energized, it is full of individuals that are truly dreaming and making things happen. And they're putting it into action. You walk around the event. And you're looking at the testbed you're looking at the the companies that are representative, small, mid large, it doesn't really matter they have a solution that they are are proud of, and it is being represented and you can have right there a conversation, you can have a conversation of saying I have a problem looks like you have a solution. It is a beautiful event. I kudos to you guys. I mean, it is really an excellent event. And I've been very fortunate to interview a lot of your kryptonite status sponsor people. It's, it's, it's an exciting time. And I for me, personally, I'm so glad that you guys are pushing forward and still making it happen, because this is a topic that has to be discussed. Now. How do they get ahold of you? Roger, then, and for the listeners out there. Roger boo, but it's spelled b o u and I'll have all this contact information out on industrial talk.com. How do they get ahold of you? Roger?

00:04

Welcome to the industrial talk podcast with Scott MacKenzie. Scott is a passionate industry professional dedicated to transferring cutting edge industry focused innovations and trends while highlighting the men and women who keep the world moving. So put on your hard hat, grab your work boots, and let's go. Alright, welcome to the industrial talk podcast where we celebrate industry heroes such as yourself, you are bold, you're brave, you dare greatly. You're changing the world and you're changing lives. That's why we celebrate you on this particular podcast. Now, this is going to be a series now. And of course, I'm super geeky about all this stuff. This is utility stuff. This is power stuff. This is energy stuff. This is brave new world stuff. And this is stuff that is pushing the edge of innovation. We're going to be talking to a gentleman by the name of john a glass Meyer, and he is with Hitachi ABB power grid. And we're gonna get we're going to start this series and we're going to be talking about what it looks like this brave new future and you know, I turn on my lights and it happens. He's got a great story to tell, let's get cracking. Yep. Okay, you know, I love this stuff. Old lineman as myself. I remembered that, you know, it was pretty simple back then when you'd have these big old dog on generators put right at the edge, typically, Bywater whatever, pushing power and and it was pretty straightforward. And and now we're venturing into a brave new world for power generation, utility, grid management, and how do you pull all that stuff together and make it a product that we who we take for granted. So I walk into a room flip on a light switch? Boop, it happens. And john, with Hitachi ABB power grid, and and others are asking those questions because it is very cool. Before we get into the interview, I want to make sure that you have these two events on your calendar. The first one is IoT solutions World Congress, this is October 5, through the seventh, I am hopefully broadcasting from that location at the at that time, spectacular event brought to you by the industrial internet Consortium, and Farah, Barcelona, both organizations put on a great event, let's get our life back in order. The next one is the manufacturing and technology show this is November 9, through the 11th, it's up in the beautiful town of Cleveland, put that on your bucket list, because it is a great location. And they're gonna bring about some great, you know, information about manufacturing technology. And once again, let's get our life back in order because this is a special time. Alright, let's get on with john. Now, again, john brings up I don't know, a semi load of experience within power grid. And of course, when we start talking about attaching additional grip, when we're starting to talk about what is taking place within a lot of the the management of fossil fuels versus energy and, and vice versa, and what do we do? And how do we do it? How do we and and the market saying, hey, I want more of this? What do we do? How do we respond? How do we ensure that the quality of our power is there, because we've got all this technology and, and yet, be able to implement renewables re implement the innovation that is taking place out there. You know, john and his team at Hitachi ABB are doing it. Now we're going to be doing a little quick cast because this is heavy stuff. And we want to make sure that we can consume it. So these are about 10 minutes or less, give or take a few now we're going to be talking on this particular conversation about the grid edge. So enjoy. JOHN, welcome to the industrial talk podcast. I'm looking forward to this conversation because listeners, I'm a big geek when it comes to anything utility anything generation. And, and john brings, well, all of that. How are you doing, john?

04:26

Great. Thanks, Scott for having me here. I'm I'm I can't say that as excited as you but I'm pretty darn excited. Wow,

04:34

man, you're gonna bring me down now. All of a sudden, I bring you down. No, yeah, I was just sorry. No, you didn't give me a break. All right. For the listeners out there. Give us a little background a little 411 on who john is.

04:45

So I am a senior advisor in grid edge solutions with Hitachi ABB power grids. And you may be wondering what on earth grid edge solutions is I believe we're going to talk about that today. So I won't I won't spend too much time but don't. Don't blow it. But the I also so I worked for Hitachi power grids as well as I'm professor, affiliate faculty at the University of Washington in distributed renewable power systems.

05:11

Is that at University of Washington so what is it? university? Yeah, the Huskies, Huskies fantastic football stadium. Oh, it's it's a beautiful football stadium. Fantastic. And you know, I've heard about boats coming up on it. It's like, hey,

05:29

what will happen is the boats will go out, they'll get lunch on out in Ballard and then they'll boat over through the, through the channel and parked right out there for the games.

05:38

All right, these are quick casts, we're going to be talking a lot about just on topics one topic at a time. So we're not going to be impacting your day. If you're listening. That's what we're going to be talking about. Let's, let's broach the subject of grid edge. What is that? grid edge.

05:57

So you may be familiar with the term edge computing. It's it's the power utility equivalent of that. So the idea is, if you look over the 120 30, plus years of power utility that have brought electricity will all over the North America, this is a little bit of a rethinking of that it's rather than that centralized power plant idea grid edge, flips it on its head and talks about bringing power in from the edge. So it's enabling not just the power out there, but all the smarts and all this intelligence related to that. So that would include things buzzwords that you might hear related to this are micro grids, battery, energy storage systems, distributed energy resource resources, or DVRs. There's a whole bunch of things, solar photovoltaics, they're big in this space, too, if you know that getting your power from the sun.

06:51

For me, we take it for granted that on I flip the switch boom, powers, good lights, good. I've got I've got equipment here. It doesn't like fluctuations in any of the cycles or anything it wants. Clean, consistent power. How is grid edge helping me achieve that? Or, you know, achieving my renewable whatever targets? versus how's that helping me?

07:16

Yep. So that's a that's a great point. You know, we're, you know, Hitachi power grids are just more broadly, within the power industry, reliability has been the cornerstone of that you, you say, you flip the light, it comes on. That is awesome. And that is something that we highly, highly values, we talk about reliability, resiliency. So that's if you had this idea of the light, you flip the light on, it comes on. But what if there are some big dramatic event that hits you say there's a superstorm or hurricane earthquake, with these sorts of grid edge technologies, where you're getting your power is close to you. So there's an expectation that you'll be able to have not only reliability, but also resiliency, you're also figuring out and bringing in some of the automation and controls affiliated with this type of stuff. So that if you want to get your power from lots of renewables get, say, all of your energy from renewables, it provides the power electronics, the controls, the automation, all that stuff you need, you don't have to worry about it.

08:18

You're saying you're saying that if I want to get my lights today, from wind? Well, for lack of a better term right there, right? You're saying the the the automation or the the technology out there? tells me that I am getting in from wind?

08:36

Well, issue it right. Yes, that's right. If you do it, right, you have designed it from the get go with reliability in mind. And you can do that you can run your power system 100% on renewables, if you want, we often look at that. And you may not want that, we like to question Where do you get your power, we definitely, if you want to do that, we can enable you to do that. If you want to focus completely on reliability, if you want to focus on low cost, if you want to do some compromise, or some way to maximize across all those different considerations of reliability, cost, renewable, you know, environment type thing, you can do that with grid edge solutions, they really allow you to do that.

09:21

See? Now that's interesting. What was the tipping point like all of a sudden, you know, traditional utility business model, right? Big generation, pushing it through wires, bringing on data substations, and it's just not right to the house. But it was just big, big stuff. What was that tipping point where if somebody says, Hey, you know, I can have micro grid, I can I can do this. I can do that. But as we continue to do this and that it requires greater sophistication from a digital point of view. Right? digitalization, what was that tipping? What was that tipping point?

09:57

So you know, actually, I think it's essentially I don't know I haven't really thought about it in those terms of a tipping point, I've thought of it more like a locomotive getting up to speed, there's just been sort of momentum building around this. There are there have certainly been some big moments, some watershed type moments, things like the price of solar panels, solar photovoltaic panels coming down consistently. I mean, you know, you think about that 1010 years ago, the price of solar panels were about, oh, somewhere in the neighborhood of five to 10 times what they are today, you look at battery, and the batteries that go into some of these, you know, big you'll hear it called in, in the, in the common media, the batteries in the utility network, you know, if you're getting the technical service or battery energy storage systems, those the price of the batteries that go inside those, those have come down, like five years ago, they were maybe $3,000 a kilowatt hour. They're they're also down by about an order of magnitude. So you can get the batteries that go in for, you know, normally around a 10th of that today. So there's been these massive swings that of course, you'd be remiss not to talk about the computer revolution that's that's been our Yeah, see,

11:13

that's that's hold that industry for Dotto, that whole innovation that all that that one day, we couldn't do it today we can it's all cloud, it's, it's this it's that we're going, you know, data analytics, we're just popping and snapping and all that stuff. To your point, Tesla has come out with a car, electric car. And I think the price point on it is 19 grand. It's it's, it's the economics, that is from my perspective, driving this, if the economics continue to push down and makes it more viable, utilities as a whole, have no excuse, they've got to figure something out. And that's where that's where Hitachi power grid comes into play. Because you, your organization, make sure that my lights don't flicker.

12:07

Yeah, it's, it's, it's all well and good to have an electric vehicle but you, you talk about wanting your lights to come on, I guarantee you, if you've got a vehicle that's powered by it, you definitely want that power there when you need it. And with these grid edge technologies, you can have that assurance, you can have the assurance of the utility, with an additional security layer right there. You can have some backup at your house, at your business, in your community, all these different layers of where you get your power from, and where you get your reliability from. Those can all be brought together under this portfolio of solutions.

12:42

And the bottom line, it's happening. It's happening, you either either play or you just move aside because it's like your train analogy. It's happening. You're trying to get down that and it's only going to go faster. It's only it's only going to be it's just going to happen, you better be a part of that whole game.

13:00

You got to be a part of it. And you know that you'd be remiss not to talk about just, you know, it's not just the cost of these things. It's also people are demanding it. People want their energy to come from renewable sources. Many people are worried about climate change. There's all these considerations that are you know, you hear it in the remaking the backbone into the renewable backbone, the backbone of the grid, renewable backbone or this full decarbonisation of society, electrify everything, all these things fit under that we want to use renewables to power more of our lives and make sure that we can get our modern energy services to things that power our lives from those sources in a reliable clean, low cost way.

13:44

Alright, we got to wrap it up. Sir john glass Meyer, did I get that my Yes, sir. Oh, Ron, again, glass. All right, hot. Hitachi power grids is the organization john, how do they get ahold of you?

14:00

You can email me, I assume you'll pop it up on the site. And probably reach out. I've also I'm also on LinkedIn, you name it. I'm here to listen.

14:10

Alright, dead sexy conversation. We're gonna, we're going to continue to sort of sort of a sort of he's quick Cass type of things that wrap around this whole utility energy power grid. The reason for that is because we it's the only way we're going to be able to consume this because it's pretty damn sophisticated. All right, we're gonna wrap it up on the other side. You're gonna have all the contact information for john, and anything else. Thank you very much for joining the industrial talk podcast. We will be right back. You're listening to the industrial talk Podcast Network.

14:48

Alright, that's number one. Number one, and as you can see that this is interesting from my perspective, and hopefully from your perspective as you are in industry, because this will impact you how we address power how we address energy, how we address the grid, how do we create a stable environment such as that, telling you, it's an exciting time. And I don't know what the future holds. But people like john and company, though, they know what's going on. And that's pretty exciting. All right. Again, we have an event October 5 through the seventh IoT solutions World Congress, brought to you by those incredible folks at industrial internet Consortium, as well as Farah Barcelona. Both organizations put on a fabulous event. So you know, put that on your bucket of Barcelona's great place. And also Let's go, let's, let's do what November 9 through the 11th. This is in Cleveland, Ohio. This is the manufacturing and technology show. Both great opportunities. All right. Be bold, be brave, daring greatly. Change the world. Thank you for joining the industrial talk podcast.
