And we're going to be striking after this. So once we end this conversation, we're going to be booting you out and until I got right, man, we got Dave with a drink works for me. So how long have you been let's let's talk a little bit about background. Give us a little background and give the listeners let's level set on who Jason is. Give us a one one.

Okay, so I am the Technical Director of the OMG standards development organization. And it is a partner to IIC and other community and the OMG incorporated ecosystem. And I oversee the standards body that helps codify expert opinion expert consensus from around the world and bring it to industry so that folks can actually build on top of a foundation that is well formed has a solid basis and lets them innovate in their way without having to reinvent all the wheels.

It's it's a hell of a service, quite frankly, because I couldn't keep up with it quite I would be one of those into visuals just sort of curled up in the corner just shaking. Like, I know, I'm supposed to do this, but I don't know where to start what to do, and what's good, bad and ugly and all of that stuff for just for clarification. Sure. We've got OMG we've got these consortiums. Yep. We've got these rulemaking bodies with, give us sort of paint that picture of what that looks like. Because you know what, I've been talking to you guys forever, and I still stumble. It's like, oh, my gosh, this guy's an OMG gun

yet, right? We have either the best or the worst accidental acronym ever. Really.

We could think about when I was a pup, it's like, Hey, this is object the object oriented? No, no. OMG Oh, my God, right?

That's exactly. We've gotten more comments about that at conferences for folks walking through going, what is that, but it's the Object Management Group. It was formed in 1989. And as the standards body around software engineering and data sharing, so make sure that you know, folks in industry, if they're sharing data they have everybody understands what they're sending, what they're receiving, how to interpret, et cetera, et cetera. So it's, it's a small amount of success, I would say, you know, little things like CORBA UML, system, l. BPM and business process modeling notation, we have a ton of different things that kind of have come out of the OMG. And about a decade ago, folks kind of realized that we know how to form communities, we know how to build communities, and how to bring experts together to let them have a space to collaborate and argue a lot. But come to a consensus on what constitutes best practice and industry and how to codify it so that we'll be able to take advantage of it. And that was where we started to see the rise of a Australe IoT consortium IIC was the name changed a couple of years ago. Excellent. So but anyway, yeah, the AIC was our first sort of sister community. And now we have 10 or 11. We've got another one coming on board, but we've grown so what we have as a community of communities, so we have the standards body group, we have IIC, we have the digital twin consortium, we have area which is the augmented reality enterprise Association, we have Sisk, which is it goes back to information quality, BPM plus health, which is all around using BPM Business Process Modeling systems and understanding how systems work and applying it to healthcare to try and and improve patient outcomes. So it's a lot of different things in a lot of different areas. Everything every industry, you can imagine, has a representative of some sort here at OMG. And

how do you keep up with it? I mean, it's the velocity of what's taking place out there. And, and the the need for rules, you just, you just rattled off, like augmented reality. Right? Still, like, we just started.

There's just so much going on. Yeah, absolutely. And it's, we have a really good mix of different communities that are established solid, they've been here for, you know, a decade or more. And we have the communities that are just starting up and really bringing a lot of energy to them. So, you know, to the, to the entire ecosystem and sort of getting new ideas and new technologies, that innovation wave moving through the communities in general. So yeah, I see is one of them. I mean, it was built around IoT, it was built around what the industry needed for a lot of the communication needs. The dynamic and the ad hoc communication needs from what maybe, you know, sort of smaller or less expensive hardware to provide a little bit of flexibility. But yeah, it's it's just a, it's a mixed bag of everything.

But boy, talk about a tiger by the tail. There's passionate, right? There has to be there's just super passionate about each one of these organizations. These consortiums, shall we say, are very passionate about what they do. How do you determine what to focus on? It's, it's like this, yeah, but you know, not all of that. But we should just do this. And then we can begin to do it, whatever, well, everything's

member driven. So it's not, we don't have staff sitting here going, we think we should do this. We don't we lose, sometimes we'll go here, that'd be a really good idea, guys. But for the most part, it's the members come to us with the ideas that they have, or the problems that they have is really where the the whole situation starts, we've got this problem, we're not entirely sure 100% of how to address it, we'd like to get a larger consensus, larger body of experts and on the, you know, the discussion. And that's really what we host here is, especially this week, at the we have a horse quarter, fourth quarter, that's right fourth quarter meeting, where we've got OMG and IIC, and DTC all co located in the hotel this week to allow all the communities a chance to intermix and really learn from each other and invest in each other as well. So it's a really good opportunity, but it is a lot. So the members come to us four times a year we have these meetings, and it is a ton of work a ton of organization, but it's all it's all from the members. I mean, it's I can't I can't stress that enough. It is its member driven. They decide what the topic spaces are, they decide what the problem spaces are, they formed the task forces to address them, they do all the work on a volunteer basis. It is phenomenal how much work and effort they put into this.

Maybe Maybe I'm just sort of that guy that's going well, now what we got all this paperwork, and we got all these people talking about these points and all that stuff. And then I got to figure out how to sort of wrangle that all in and yes, you're a tie is this and this is good. And we all had this debate and all that I just, it's it's phenomenal. About what you guys do. I mean, I just like it's a tsunami tsunami of just wow, that's good information. That's true that it really is just like a constantly doing

it really is. And we have we have absolutely some of the the same experts, the same technical experts from industry that come to us with the the ideas, the solutions, the you know, the conversations, they also run the meetings of all the different task forces, so members step up and they become a chair of a particular task force. And some of the been been doing this for 1015 20 years. And they're doing it because they absolutely love it, they have that passion. To it to just, this is how we move the ball forward for everybody. And that's really what has to happen is that you have to be able to not just provide a solution, not just get it out into industry, but also make sure that it is accessible. And that is usable by pretty much everyone. So it's like we give away our standards for free. That's the accessibility part. Anybody can go to our website and download any of our standards, you don't have to pay for them. You don't have to be a member, just go to the website. And if you you're like I would really like to take a look at the details of some specification. It's yours. Go take a look, dive in, figure out what you know what you want to do with it. If you want to implement it, if you look at it and go, I think this could be better. Anybody can file an issue against our specifications globally. And we take every single one of those. And by we I mean the members, of course, take every single one of those, discuss it, decide what to do about it and produce the next version of the specification incorporating all that global input. So it's really a it's a conversation that not only happens here among the members, but it goes out into industry into the public pulls the information and analyzes it digests it goes back out into industry comes back and you go through another analysis phase and we just have this constant refresh cycle.

I will I will say that it's one of the things that really makes this work at all. First of all, it's It's the passion of the members, as you mentioned, it's the energy of everybody. It's the intellect. But it's also our procedure. So we have our procedures policies are PNP. Yeah, we the PNP. That's when the heavenly choir opens up and sings when you say that word. But the PNP is essentially our it's our roadmap. It governs every process that we have here. And it was authored by and continues to be maintained by members. So if they decided that something in a process just isn't working, they can change it.

But again, I'm gonna have to ask it, it's like you're not, I'm not going to say, hey, hey, I think we need to change it. I'm going to do it right now. Just don't Don't mind me, right? I'm not gonna do that. No, no, that's where the process kicks in. It's absolutely, yeah, let's do it, you know, and then right and, and then hone the value of whatever that changes or whatever that new standard is

added. So give an example. I actually chair the, in addition to being technical director for the whole enchilada. I also chair the the process subcommittee of the Architecture Board, which is a review board. But the EB PSC is actually devoted to editing the PNP. So if anybody says, Hey, I saw a problem, so we actually use that as part of our process to author the process document that drives the process. It's all very meta. So

the conversations are always like, Nope, it needs to improve. I hear you, you need to improve. I was thinking about this one needs to be improved. This one needs to be changed. Everything is around that. Oh, yeah. I don't know how you even have you roll it out.

This is I've been to the IoT solutions World Congress cut, that's just a conference. Like, hey, check that tech stuff. And I'm just I am so excited about seeing this because no one else.

It's, I will say that in the younger days of the of the organization, I hear tales, it was a bit like the Wild West, could you had, you know, luminaries in the field? yelling at each other in rooms? Like, oh, yes, it's not how it was, you know, it was it was apparently something to behold. But it's for the most part, you know, people people rein it in, but sometimes the passion gets out, it gets interesting. But they always go ahead and come back to being professionals

see, but but that's what it'll take. Absolutely. Because there's this just generally speaking, you know, being out there looking at all the innovation that's taking place, all the changes that are happening, all this stuff is is just frothy with excitement, and all of this good stuff. But it's just there's got to be some sort of way of being able to wrangle that. And, and I you guys, I'm just telling

you right now, I gotta say that I was a member for eight years, authored a couple of specs, I was on the architecture board before I came on to staff. And it is positively one of the neatest environments that I've ever been in. I started in academia, I went to industry, and then ended up here. And this is like the perfect blend of those two. It has the you have the academic bent of folks who are just frighteningly brilliant. And they really want to make this just as perfect as it can be. But at the same time, they come from industry, and they realize that there's a pragmatic end that they must meet. So they balance each other beautifully. You end up with the incredibly deep academic intellectual discussions. I mean, angels dancing on my head of a pin has nothing on some of the discussions were out here. And then they turn around and go, that's great. But we've got a deadline. We have companies waiting on this, let's figure it out. And so they buckle down and they make the decisions that they have that that they have consensus. And it's it's truly a wonderful, wonderful Stroman. It's just a it's a it's a constant training.

It's so needed, I think, I think, quite frankly, the masses don't know that this happens. It's like, Hey, I'm a manufacturer, and I'm just trying to, you know, manufacture my widget in the best way. But I hear this whole thing needs to happen. What do I go? What do I do, right? That that message needs to get out? Because this is so important.

It's fundamental, I'm getting really, I mean, it's like anybody who goes to a grocery store or target or any retail store, right? Our retail Task Force is actually the group that defined unified point of sale, which is the standard that lets the cash register, talk to the printer, talk to the scanner, talk to all of that unified POS is the standard that that governs all of that. That was from here. We're like the real like the stealth organization, the most successful the standards organization no one's ever heard of, right. It's just it's it's kind of bizarre. But yeah, the work that's done here literally affects people on a global basis, across every industry you can think of, in one way or another and Yeah, yeah, it's it's a it's a ton

of fun. I'm just telling I did we even cover? standards? We just sort of ripped on everything else except for what? Okay, or here's one for you. Yeah. What's this elemental reason? I got another card. Yeah, here. Another card right there.

But the so element of reasoning is actually from my own academic background, right. And I started off in academic research, got my doctorate at UNC Chapel Hill, and in software engineering and abstraction analysis and design patterns, and just, you know, sort of how you comprehend about systems. And I ended up here, and it's just, it's, yeah, it's just, it's a lot of fun. I love this community.

Well, okay. I'm also a mechanical engineer, right, by my definition, right? Difficult mechanical engineer who transform into a machine learning specialist. So I did my PhD on machine learning, right? Um, that's kind of interesting, because it allows me to see both sides of the story, right. But the physical thing is, I understand that right? Because I was there in the shop floor. Right. But then to try to understand how the computer we're modeling, right, that's the other side of story. And this is what we're bringing here. Right? So I'm currently working in the company which is Research Center and our office space in the Basque Country. Beautiful, beautiful place.

It is it is kind of interesting because the region is so vivid, so much industry, so much research, right is very, very interesting. And, well, 20 years ago, they found it, some of election and the TV broadcasting, television broadcasting quality, they funded research center to do all things related to this conversation and computer science. Back in the day, you will never call it machine learning or artificial intelligence, somehow. Now we're doing it now. We call it the right way. Right. And this 20 years, we've been supporting the industry from the research perspective, right, helping them to understand the problems trying to solve their problems to some sort, given some technology, here and there. Working with companies like Agoura to develop technologies with them as well. And it's been it's been it's been quite a road, right. Quite quite quite a row.

Yep. And, and you've created that sort of environment that, that platform that whatever you want to tap that bed over here, Javier, give us a little background on what that is?

Yes, I'm actually I will start with wilderness monastery that is interesting. Our name Angra angora is a buzzword for uncle. So we are, we are trying to bring all these technologies that we have around all these things, artificial intelligence, connectivity, edge computing, we are trying to, like bring it down to the real edge genetics, from our, let's say, from our ad ADM, from the company to our parent companies, they are mainly industry. So all of us are working in really huge industrial environments. So we understand and we are able and because we are, let's say our background is more mechanical or more the people inside the team or let's say traditional engineering, disciplines, that you can find in, in, in an industrial environment, we are able to understand and to bring those technologies to let's say all these those technologies that are on academic papers, or I don't know, in ideal situations, we are trying to bring them down, change them as decided in order to provide to the end user what they need. They don't need a machine of the IoT machine or industrial industry that further though machine they need a machine that has a high availability, or they have high quality or, or other needs. So we use we use use all these tools together in order to solve those specific,

specific Yeah, I would imagine I need a machine that doesn't create a headache for me if I'm a manufacturer, and I want it simple. And I want to be able to say, okay, if I'm pretty simple in my needs, I've got a problem. I want a solution. And I want inside so I can make sure that that problem is managed properly. Carlos. So how does that how does that fit in with what you guys are doing?

Well, actually, that's quite interesting, right? Because when we started doing this, we were looking at, okay, what is the digital? Right? Yeah, what is the definition of a digital picture? And how can we can build something so anybody can understand something very simple, because you can use digital twins for many things, right? Complex, right? So we came up with the story, right? storyline, that storyline that this does, it doesn't necessarily has to be something that you will find this is not a product that we're selling, right? It's something that will showcase our capabilities. Our collective is something that is showcasing things that we have done to these many years doing research and to be shown in in a very, let's say, manageable way, very controlled way, but that can deliver this and this is this is what we are bringing here to the world to Congress rice is basically a pick and place no where a robot will pick one element from conveyor belt and he will show it to the camera. But up to that point that is a real thing. That is something that you may find in many, many industry facilities, right? But when we have extended that, which is with the augmented reality approach where you just wear your Oculus glasses, you are somewhere in the world, right? And you are remotely controlling the robot, right, you're doing the visual inspection, right? Then you can rotate, you can move around your ears, you can actually get closer to it, and then you will value, right. So we deliver all everything, all the technologies, all the physics that have to be in a model, all the communication that needs to happen from the from the PLC is etc, etc, to the virtual model. And also, he put in that technology that they were has for energy consumption. So we are giving the information about the energy consumption at every single point in time of the cell. So the person somewhere in the world doing the verification, the remote verification process can actually know how effective is how green is his, his operation, right? Which is very important for the carbon footprint, right? Yeah. And this This is, a lot of technologies are out there, right? Like, for instance, when we were doing the communication, right, you can wire right. But of course, we want it to have it in a wireless approach, right? Because theoretically speaking, the person doing the verification is going to be somewhere in the world. Right. So we were testing some 5g technologies in our center, and say, why not? This just use 5g? Why?

Because Absolutely, why? Why not? Why? Why complicate things? Right? Yeah. Why say? Yeah, we can do 5g, and we can hardwire and we can just just put the connectivity and just say 5g, that's it, we're done.

It was a little bit late. So when we call the first like, Okay, we want to we want to put the 5g Amateur transmitter out there, and we want to do 5g There. Right? And they were like, Sorry, do you need permission from the government to do that? Then we said, Okay, we will get it. And we got it. Because we are partnering with, with some companies in the qualification work that they have bands. So Massimo will give us their, their their band for three days. Here, we are using their bands here, right now. It's in these these things are amazing, because all these companies are helping us right to deliver the message, right? And showcasing that these technologies are here, right? And it's not difficult for you to apply those technologies, if you know how to do where to do on which buttons to be pressed. Right? And it's about the trip, it's about the road, it's about how to do it.

Do you think that, you know, we all understand the bad side of COVID, we all understand. But I think the good side of COVID accelerated a lot of the conversation here, it's like, hey, we need it. We need to have that business to be able to be resilient or whatever, I can't get out there because of whatever reasons, but I need to still look at that. And I and I, like I said, the good side is the fact that it accelerated on us. And those conversations, were less human and hot, and more. We need it. What do we do? We're ready to go. Even if it's going to be painful.

let's say nothing our growth we have an integration of different technologies that are making this possible. And we are trying to mimic real applications actually is just an I like to say like that is it says more model of a larger deployment doesn't have at least in some in some levels in in a real airport. In a baggage inspection system, where we are able to well in this in this in this model, we are able to mimic all their conveyor belts and part of the say interesting and and really easy to to find it for example, in industrial environments, conveyor belts are everywhere in an industrial plant. So we have a small and a small version of it. And from it, we are trying to extract all the interesting things that we have all the technologies that between decom tech and ankura Manage really good. So, we are we are seeing from from that scenario, we are extracting data that is able just to do some analysis related with energy consumption, with maintenance, but we also have other types of datas. We have a robot that is doing some manipulation of it. Were able to have fun Measurement about quality. And it's, of course, quality is related to the, to the inspection, as you are able to manipulate manipulation of that system of that of that element, you're able to, to inspect, and you're able to do some, let's say, reject the PC, if it is, if it's not, okay. And in, let's say, a really simple, okay knock a system that you might find in an industry. But of course, with this integration on a high level, other digital, where you are able to just integrate all this information, all this data is coming from your system. And the human in the loop is able to take decisions related to all those different environments, the human is able to introduce in that in that in that in that world, in the digital twin unable to see the piece that you are manipulating the decide on this quality, but also you are able in the same place, you are able to decide on the energy consumption or in the maintenance of your of your system. Let's say that that's my my my point of view from the let's say, industrial park, but maybe Carlos is able to give us a little bit more insights on that on that system.

The question I have, and we're going to venture into that, but the question I have to and along with all the other bad things with pandemic, I think that there was also a an accelerated need to collaborate. And that these technologies, these insights is this ability to be able to create innovative solutions. Because of that, then all of a sudden, you know, Javier and Carlos are talking together, and they're saying, Hey, we can, and there's that collaborative approach to solve a bigger problem or whatever it might be. That to me is that there's this compounding effect that exists with this technology, as well as this, this recognition to be collaborative, right? Of course, you don't have all the answers. Yeah, that's natural. That's it? That's right. Yeah. So how do you deal with that? And I have to ask, how did you guys come to know each other? If that is the way that it's like, you know, you're over here doing your thing? You're over here doing this thing? What how did you guys come to?

Well, my background in in a nutshell, I used to be for many years now, in the past the university professor, I was a specialist of complex systems math, computer science. Hello,

used to be a processor. So you know, and, and so and then I developed, you know, Technology, my lab and I decided to bring it from academia to the real world. And that was what we call today's 360 degree simulation.

Cosmo Tech, you rattled off something that's an acronym, an acronym for something, what does it mean?

Sure. Oh, Cosmo means complex systems modeling. Say,

there it is. It's pretty good. Yeah. And you got the URL Cosmo Tech, because nobody had that. That's, that's a good one. So with that, give us a little sort of a definition of digital twin. And then let's get into the simulation component. If that's good, give us a what is a digital twin?

Sure. But digital digital twin is a digital replica of a system. Originally, it was a digital replica of physical objects. But now we are doing digital twins of systems of organizations. And by the way, that's why we use the word 360 degrees to say that we take, you know, and we present the systems, and we connect to the data in real time. And oh,

so, you know, everybody uses digital twin, I have a digital twin of my building, I have a digital twin of my substation, and so on and so forth. But what you're doing is you're sort of holistically looking at the whole, you know, whatever the business itself, it says,

exactly, we don't only look at the at the physical system, the physical parts, but also to all the interactions, the processes, the people who work with the system, what they do, and how they interact with the system.

So take us through what that looks like. I'm a company. I've got the I'm, I'm interested in digital twin, or I'm, I'm using a digital twin. Take us through that process.

Well assume that you have a supply chain to manage. And you know that there is a lot of uncertainty. And now more and more complexity in your supply chain. And you want to make that's

that's an understatement. And in fact, this pandemic, everybody's a supply chain expert.

Oh, that's right. And you have the problem is what you have to do with the supply chain, you have to reconcile things that seem to be completely impossible to reconcile. So you want to increase the profit, you want to be resilient, at the same time you want to reduce cost and reduce the co2 emissions. That's your problem, right? And all that changes all the time. So what do you need for being able to manage this and make the best possible decisions? You need to have three things? The first thing is what happened in the past? What can I learn from data from the past? The second thing is what is currently happening, you're looking at data from the present. But the most important thing you need is to have access to data from the future, what is going to happen? If I do this? What if what is going to happen if I do that, and what we do with digital twin, we create the replica, we link it to you know the data, and we have the ability and that's the simulation plant to simulate it to see what is going to happen in the future so that you can test 100,000 futures to find the one you want and the resulting one.

Do you want that future? Look, you have to load the data, some data, you have to load some historical data in some way to paint a possible picture in the future. And then do you? Does the simulation allow you to learn or what help us?

That's a very that's a very good question. Because we can use data from the past and we do. But what is very important in what we do is that what we put in the digital twin is the knowledge of the different experts. We don't only rely on data from the past, but we are in a system industry or system. You have experts who know very well what is happening on your live production line. What is happening with the robots, what is happening with logistics, what is happening with when people come to work, are they in three eight shifts or do the work? So this knowledge, we put the knowledge and we make the links with the knowledge and because we have all these? Once we have that we just have to connect to the state the current state of the system, and what do we do? We simulate So based on the knowledge, we can add knowledge that we have learned from data from the past, right? But there is the knowledge that comes from the brain of people. And it's

so deep. So this is cool. This is cool. And as you run multiple simulations, you're putting in different different type of data, different type of parameters, whatever it might be. And then you're is there. Is there a time frame of into the future? Like, can can the future be a year? Can the future be two years? What is sort of that ideal sort of future state?

There is no ideal we go from 15 minutes to 40 years, depending on the use case. 15 minutes? Yeah, we're doing definitely are sure. We Yeah, for example, assume that you have just a line, a production line. And you you're connected to the data, and you know that you, you're going to make a decision. And you have to go as fast as possible to make this decision. Because you see, for example, that a machine, the product productivity of a machine is dropping. So what is going to be the impact of this drop on your production, right? So you very rapidly simulate, just to know what's going to happen. And once you know that, what you do, you say, here is what I can do here is the different view of the different options. And now I'm going to simulate all these options to make the best possible decision. We do that timescale. And we do that up to 40 years, when we manage very, very big assets and equipments, for example, for maintenance and renewal.

Yeah, because the life expectancy of some assets are like, like, when I was in a tank farm, right? Those tank farms last like 40 5060, or whatever, whatever the life expenses, you got to run.

Yeah, exactly. And for example, that's what we do. Mr. Big electric networks. Yes. Electric net? Yes. That's a great example. Yeah. And we are, for example, we have full digital twin of all the high voltage, I mean, transmission, electric utility of France, the whole country, 1 million assets, 4 million interactions. And we have all the teams with where they are their skills, their cost. And every year, the company of T spends 800 million for maintenance. And when you go down that road, yeah, you're absolutely right. And now they're running simulations all the time to find the best decision, because there are a lot of cascading effects. If you delay an investment, this is going to you're going to have more outages on this, then you're going to run the teams there. But the team will not be available to do something else. And maybe you can have a cascading effect. So yeah, do you do you

got a couple of questions? Do you simulate the need for the workforce to be educated? Like there's a challenge today that there is a future skill requirement? And if I don't do it here, I'm not gonna get it there. Sure. And by

the way, we are doing that very, very concrete example. The same the same problem than the one I described on the electric grid. Yeah, we you have that in factories, because you have robots, you have fleets of robots, and they're obsolescence. So they, they lost, and they they age, and at the moment, they don't work anymore. So you have to decide to replace them by new ones. But then I have to train the people to be able to manage these years, when am I going to train the people when I trade them, they are not productive. So it has an impact. So you have to optimize all the things. And that's what we do with the simulation digital twin, so different times, but then

again, at 360, that's where you have to a lot of people are sort of siloed in their digital twin approach or look, do you also in that utility analogy, upload historical maintenance records. And so you'll know that this transformer had the oil changed out and whatever it is, or it's X amount of years old, and that type

of an exec. So we have that for each equipment, depending on the utility, some have all the data, some other loans, if they have we can from that learn from this data to create a model of each equipment when they don't. We have general equations that are known from this business, and that we can use and then we do that for 1 million asset. And we put all that together, and then we can run these simulations and create value from it.

So the question I have is, it's like a, again, it's a tsunami of of simulated data. Now how do I, how do I sit there and sort of swim through that. And, and be efficient at that. And now, my, you know, assessment,

two answers to that. One, the first one is when you create and when you deploy the simulation digital twin, you start by the problem you want to solve. And that is going to tell you what you're going to look at in the simulation. So we provide a huge amount of data to have from the future. That's data from the future. And that's not only one future, it can be hundreds of future depending on what you do and the way you manage it. And this, the first way is you start by knowing what are the KPIs I'm interested in? And these are the one with the platform we're going to show you that's the first answer. But the second answer I would say, is, probably is very, very interesting. Because all these data are what we call synthetic data, there are data generated by the by the twin, right by the simulation. And you know that one, what you can do with this data, you can you can use AI algorithms to be trained with these data, right. And then you can learn from the data you produce about the system, you have. And you can use these tools to find the best course of action when it's too complex. So that we have, I would say AI at the beginning, when you say for example, to get the data for a given asset, and being to learn when this asset with AI or you know, neural networks can upstream us that you put that in the model, you put the knowledge of experts, then you run simulations, and you use AI to learn from the results of the simulation.

I am a big fan of simulations. I can't put my arm around the level of complexity that you're talking about. I mean, that's if you're looking at just utilities alone. I mean, that's just as it's mind boggling.

And by the way, remember the it's complex systems modeling very, and the very important thing is complexity is you, you always want to get rid of complexity, because you say, Oh, if I touch here, it's going to have an impact there. But now assume that you want to have an impact there. And that you have the possibility to know that you just have to touch here, by cascading effect to obtain at very cheap cost, the impact you want. That's the future. See? And that's the President

You have to know that futures contract. And they have so many people visiting the IOC conference in Barcelona these days. And there is also a second contract second place. So it was rather challenging to find a hotel room for another night. So it was easier to say, Yeah, we got an extra bed in ours.

It's true that other conferences pretty big, too. I mean, yeah, it's pretty big. It's lively. And it's fun. All right.

We had a prior conversation with Marc,

Oregon. And we were talking about the consortium that has just originally been kicked off here a few hours ago called responsible computing. I think it's a good opportunity, Marc to expand a little bit upon that give us a little history behind why this is important. I get it. For the listeners help us understand a little bit about that. Yes. So maybe I start with a small story. So I used to be the CTO for Energy Environment utilities, for me for more than 10 years. And I started to be on stage for conferences and talking about different things that we're targeting energy and

maintenance scenarios, AI, machine learning and whatever new technology stuff. And then I said that there is more that needs to be talked about. And the more was around environment, because it became part of my role on one side, but also something that's relevant to my family. I'm married has three kids. So I also want to have that, that worlds that we are currently living in being ready for them to live in the future.

And looking at the newspaper from one of the academia. That was in 2019. I have seen a model that comes from the foundation for future generation. It's the Russell Russell Space Foundation and they came up with a model they call for P model. And peas are standing for people. You

Plant prosperity and participation. And I said said that is a brilliant model because it is addressing the feelings that individuals have. It's addressing the challenges that organizations are facing. And it's opening up through the force P sort of the participation, two way of interacting and engaging for individuals. And looking at the announcement of the OMG Consortium for responsive computing, these four P's are also at the heart of what we want to do and what we want to achieve. And what we have already been doing it the last three years, as part of the IBM initiatives that we have been doing, first of all,

it's, I find the necessity for an organization or a body like this consortium, even more needed today than ever before. And we spoke briefly about it. And I think that what's interesting is, is the necessity to be engaged to be a part of it to participate. So

have you done has for this consortium? You're not starting from scratch, right? Are you?

Have you sort of begun taking the the information and the insights provided by other consortium members and then begin to build this disorganization? Yes. So why we started, we put together a team of 100, IBM assistants were more volunteers. And they participated not because they were forced to buy cars, but because they thought there was a very good combination of technology, and individual interest that is going alongside that subject, and formalizing someone's framework, some of the ideas, but we clearly said at the beginning already, this is nothing that we can do by ourselves only, we want to validate our initial ideas with others. So that's where we started thinking around the council or consortium. And we reach out to different industries, like the financial services sector, telecommunications, industry, energy industry consulting industry. And with these participants, we were discussing a Is it crazy what we have in our mind? Or is it reflecting what you also experience a field. And you can imagine that, looking back two years, two years from now, in the past, most people were thinking about cloud and public cloud.

So if I, as a CTO was talking to customers talking about cloud and technology, they were just sitting back, and it's another guy talking about Florida, blah, blah, blah, right, right. Oh, yeah. Whereby when we talked about responsive computing, and the ideas and necessity, you got full attention of everyone listening in. And we're feeling really this intense

thinking that I started to do on how this would be applicable for the Ministry for the organization or for them individually. And that's also where we reached out to more and more organizations and asked, Hey, would you like to join the council? How would how would we need to formalize it? And one of the feedback was it, we would like to join, but we don't want this to be

an enterprise driven organization, we want it to be more mutual.

So we approached the OMG optic management group to see if they would have appetite and engaging and collaborating with us. And we found it a great partner that invested in you. That's something where we feel not only proud of doing it, but where we think that we can make a difference by even bringing our own network into

the did you with that, that ideal spot on don't get me wrong? Was there any sort of pushback, like companies saying, I get it, but we have it? I mean, any any pushback on on being a part of that organization? Like, hey, this is this is this is our, this is our stuff, that type of thing. So it's a it's a very interesting question.

I just need to spend some time to figure out how to best answer because I have an answer that I will not openly share here. No, because this is something that I can't I cannot I didn't mean to pop you with that question. It would just be something that I can imagine somebody saying, Wow, no, no. Let me do it more analyze. Large organizations have structures have plans and vacancy. So

most of them immediately, some set that by themselves to structure. The idea is something that they have been already been doing since years and they are more advanced and therefore would not like to engage

Because this type of discussion, or would not like to have the name associated with others in the same context. So that's one silo,

as you are working with organizations always have to follow a certain process to convince the stakeholders to get a message on WhatsApp.

And that need to be a sustainability message

could be also a business message messenger value message whereby they're looking at current discussions. So remember, that started two years ago, or two years more into this? We see more and more organizations say that the responsibility side is something we need to do. And the commercial aspects are only second priority. So we really see number 50. In the discussion.

So the hook is the fact that I think that there's a lot of pressure from a responsibility perspective. And that's, that's environmental that responsibility is environmental on one side, but also equitability. So it's about people, it's about bias. It's about diversity. So the societal

aspects that come into it. And societal is not just how we talk to each other, how we apply data to it out with write code to it, how do we apply AI to it? What's the impact of a big data set of hyper scalars? If you build up in a small community, what's happened to the groundwater? So there is an interconnection of different aspects that most people are not aware of know that where we cease interconnection happened and the responses

and also the framework that we have defined. So what I do here is that there's societal motivators, for companies to

participate, to find answers to, to do it the right way.

And I would imagine there's some financial component to that, too. There is always a financial component. But I'm not here to discuss about that one. Let's take an example. You probably have heard about the war for talent.

So where do you get new talents for your business?

And how do you attract talents, you can attract talent by money? Yes, but that's looking at the current new generation coming in. That's not the only factor. You can attract them by fancy worker and balance. But with a pandemic situation, that's a work environment. So not so of all as it has been two years ago, or three years ago. So what is attracting young motivated people to join your organization. And that's something that is most close to their heart. So it's about societal aspects. It's about collaboration, it's about the future of the planet, it's about environment. So that's where you can come in, when you change your thinking and the way you address responsible computing in your,

your, your your firing on all cylinders, that that workforce component is a well is a hot topic for for many, to figure out what

what's the solution, and I think you're absolutely spot on.

From a consortium perspective.

I'm just trying to get sort of order of magnitude, what size like let's say we have 100 seats. And we go through the process of what this consortium how it sort of operates, the assets. So some of the consortium currently has two founding members, it's Dell and IBM. Yes. But it's just a coincidence that these are technology companies. So we are in the process of having other please join me because the value of consortium lies not within having a computer manufacturers or consulting organizations only work together. It comes much more from having manufacturers joining health organizations joining government budgets joining.

Because if you want to have an impact with responsibility, this is about all industries. So it's not just the tech industry that is concerned with technology. digitalization is happening everywhere. So everyone has a technology

scene. I like that. It's not it's not sort of

in a silo. This this goes across multiple disciplines, multiple industries, multiple whatever, because it is it is something that

needs collaboration through conversations and not just that there's a there's an action components that say it's one thing to have that conversation and yeah, you're right. Yeah, you're right. And everybody's saying, Yeah, you're right. But you've got a tangible deliverables to that are

or, or will be available or in a vision to be available to industries to, to draw from, and then be able to also, you know, learn, yeah, all of that. So I only mentioned to family members, but we also have academia. So when you use

these VPCs, British computing society join two organizations also aligning to it. And by aligning, we mean that they are adhering to the manifesto for Responsible values and principles. And each and every individual can also adhere to this principle so that individuals can join a consortium, they can get aware of what's going on. And as part of creating a consortium, IBM is also donating part of what we've been doing in the past. So that's according to manifesto, it's maturity assessment model, to give it a kickstart into the consortium and to build on it together with members.

Do you have any real timeline? I mean, it's happening now? Yeah, you kicked it off at the IoT solutions World Congress here? What are some sort of milestone events that you might have laid out as a result of that?

So that we, ultimately up to the consortium members defined timeline. But the workgroups are planned to start next week already and on the sixth dimension of the framework. And then we hope for sure to have the IoT conference here, also as a Kickstarter for other organizations that are willing to join. Just for the sake of understanding, can you repeat what the six dimensions are? Oh, definitely. So it's a hexagon of hexagons. It's built up with responsible computing data center, responsibility, infrastructure, responsibility code, responsible computing, data usage, responsible computing systems, and responsible reporting. In fact, it's excellent, because all of these are interconnected. But they are not mandatory to deploy to us. So organizations can start with any of these. And we have also defined paths based towards one or several of these.

It's good. It's a pleasure to be here. Thank you very much for having me. Yeah, we're here in the Mobile World Congress. And it's been a great experience to be in banking business again.

Come on, you know, that's great deal. That's got to be feeling good. Because you guys were sort of, in that whole pandemic environment, you guys sort of had to shut down sort of figure out what to do. Where are you going? What's happening? And it's great. Absolutely. Great to see you at this event. And and sort of getting back to normal. Kudos to the fair of team. I love it. All right. Yeah. It's fun. Yeah, go ahead. I'm sorry, excuse me. Sorry, we're, he's in Spain, I'm in Louisiana, we're going to have a little bit of delay, so don't worry about it, listeners. So for the listeners out there, give us a little background on who Roger is.

Oh, I've been working in the events industry for the last 12 years. I am the founding director of the IoT solutions for commerce. We do this event in partnership with the different internet Consortium. And we've been growing these events since then, creating an environment for innovation and for innovation applied to each of the industries. And so it's a very creative, very international environment. And we have leading people on the industry ball so it's it's great to do that. I'm also in charge of the tech events in in Fira and the startup events. So yeah, been been busy and very happy to do

I'm telling you, it's a good busy. I like it. I like the fact that you are focused and team Farah, Barcelona, as well as the industrial internet Consortium, are focused on trying to get things back to normal. And I'm telling you right now, the conversations I've had Roger about innovation, especially over this period of this pandemic, period, have been just absolutely incredible. Because what you guys are doing is just leading that way is is true, blazing that trail of innovation. And that is really needed to create a business of resiliency. How long has IoT solutions World Congress been in? sort of been doing this?

Yeah, well, IoT solutions? Well, Congress started in 2015. So if you remember in our first revision, but then people talked about m to m. And there were some IoT events, just talking about the big possibility of things getting connected and the million of million of things connected. But we had a different position, because we wanted that to be real. So things get connected to solve some different problems. So we focused on how these connected things will solve industrial problems in different industries, like energy, like fuel ideas, like manufacturing, minutes, etc. And this is our starting point, when out, then there were no commercial model yet or business cases, because there was just innovation and experimentation on the IoT. And now our second division, we are very had some testbed and will have also commercial products that could be sold for companies. And since then, we've been growing. And now we have the next change the next important change for the future, because we've been working very hard in strategic plan for the growth for the next five years. And we are changing a little bit our strategic focus. So instead of focusing on content, and solutions for each of the vertical industries, for manufacturing, for healthcare, for energy, utilities, etc, we are focusing on solutions and content for each of the profiles. Because after studying our attendees, we found that what they really wanted is to have a dialogue between end user, as an industry and user, with their competitors, can also with other industries involved on the future, so that in the future, they see that innovation will not come just as a steal, as it used to be so I don't know, for instance, the energy. industry will innovate and innovation was competing against your competitor innovate something different that made you more productive and new competitor. In the future, what they see is that innovation will come from connecting different industries, for instance, automotive industry, the future of an automotive industry is not making the better agenda, their competitor, but connecting with entertainment platform, with road building, company, and with those companies that are building the autonomous car. So as the driver will not be driving, there's some platform that has to entertain him. And as the car will drive automatically, there are some road builders that are putting some sensors and edge computing in the road zero. So the important thing here is connect garage industry, all these people that are involved in the change of all the industries. And this is the new role for the IoT service. connector.

Yeah, see, and I think that that is an absolutely brilliant approach to this innovation. And, and what I always see is, is the necessity to collaborate. If you think that you're going to just sort of sit there in a silo and think that I'm going to come up with a solution alone, you're missing it, you're missing a completely it is a truly collaborative model bent on true solutions. True problem solving. What I like is how you're connecting different industries. I think that's brilliant. In any Here's the reason why. It's brilliant because I look at problems maybe a different way then maybe you do like in the case of energy right? There are so wait, there's so many ways of being able to bring us together in a collaborative but different industry. I think it's I think it's brilliant. Now, Roger, where do you see it going? Now you've changed your strategic approach. Where do you see you going with IoT solutions World Congress?

Yeah, we see that our focus keep the same. So we have to be the place where nobody, people need to design the future of each of the industries. But I see that there's a lot of growth to come. Because as we are as, after the pandemic, all the industries have skilled that detail is the way and that all the industries will be connecting faster than we expected. They need a place where to meet with colleagues and to meet with other people in the industry, where there's about dialogue between these end users about use cases, business cases, some things that have worked into that haven't work, and to learn, to experiment and to, to find new solutions for the new business models. So this is a place that we want them to me, we are working hard to bring high valuable content for these people. And we were expecting to have big growth for the next five years.

Well, it is a topic it is a focus on many, many businesses minds, if I if I had a nickel every time I spoke to somebody in manufacturing that is looking at how do we digitize? How do we venture into this digital transformation? One of the keys that I have to ask you is that what differentiates your organization and what you and IoT solutions World Congress and internet industrial internet Consortium, you have testbeds, this is not what I would say pie in the sky, you see it in action? Can you explain a little bit about why that is so important?

Yeah, this is blue. And it's very important and very important since the beginning. Because we want that, for us, it's important that people can touch the solution can understand the solution and can find a real application of this motion. So it's not just talking about an IoT platform that's very abstract, and can be used for everything. But talking about, I don't know how we have had different solutions for agriculture, for aquaculture. For binary, we had also for petrol refinery pro board that went into the tubes and clean them. And we've had different solutions in the investment area. And I've helped people from the industry to understand and to have a clear vision on how this can be applied in a real solution. And it's also most of the attendees also tell us that it's very interesting for them, for innovators, to have solutions, to be able to see solutions not only from your industry, but from other industries, because you can see different approach or different solutions that can also be applied to your industry.

Again, brilliant, I think that especially today, I think in in light of the pandemic, the necessity to collaborate and collaborate with innovative things, thinkers that are involved with IoT solutions World Congress is I mean, you get a better picture, you get a better picture of what's taking place. The question I have, and when I've been very fortunate to broadcast from IoT solutions World Congress is the speed of innovation, right? There's a there's a, there's a velocity that exists with innovation. How does somebody like me just learn to grow? Where am I at? I mean, it's, it's it's so fast. Roger, how do I how do I manage that? How does this information also get out to the masses that would benefit from this innovation?

Yeah, this is very interesting, Scott, because as you said, it's, it's so fast. And it's, it's also from collaboration, no one can knows about everything we want can be the best of everything. And I think it needs a lot of dialogue between different people that has different knowledge. And with all that, you can really innovate because, for instance, what what's happening in the next IoT solutions world, that we're introducing new disruptive technologies that are going to change the industries like digital twin, or like quantum computing, and this is going so fast and so fast, but it's important to have people that have the technical knowledge, and people sort of have the strategy in your hand in that they share knowledge. This dialogue between the it the OT strategies, these are important they are because all of them are important part of the solution.

Again, in light of the necessity to collaborate, even within organizations that have identified themselves as little silos it ot whatever, even that is a, that that is an old model that has to be sort of, at least transitioned out so that everybody's working together, because the solutions that IoT solutions World Congress, and its members are coming up with require that that necessity to strategically look at what the value of these these innovations bring to the business. And, and bottom line it does, Roger. I mean, you guys are right at that cutting edge. How does? I mean, with all the stuff that's been going on? If I go to where would I go to get great information on what you guys are doing? What industrial internet consortium is doing? How do I how do I get involved?

Well, first day, you've got obviously that web pages of the industrial internet consortium and the IoT solutions World Congress. But you can also ask to be part of the community. And so we'll send you regularly information we send to the community with valuable content. And obviously, there's no places that you have to be that's once a year, the event. So we are we keeping we try to keep in contact with the community during call year. But the important place to be is once a year to meet with people of the industry users, with their colleagues with other innovative people and to, to dialogue with and collaborate with others to find this.
