That's that I can remember, and and we are celebrating the program called METAL, which is metallurgical engineering trade apprenticeship and learning. It's a mouthful, so just go by METAL. It's an acronym. So anyway, that's fine. In the hot seat, Kayla. I'm not even going to attempt her last name, but it's a cool last name, and she is with Erie Bronze, and she was with us yesterday. And she's a part of the program. She's got mad skills. Let's get cracking. Yeah. Yesterday was cool.
It was.
But you take it for granted because you work for Erie Bronze.
I do. I get to see it every day. Every day.
It's like it's just. How long you been with them?
Little over three years.
Still.
So, in the game, I'm still very much a baby.
Yeah, you are.
Still very much a baby. A lot of the guys have been there. Gosh.
Forever.
Decades.
Well, was yeah, and it's it's it's generational.
Yeah,
like yeah, my dad, my grandpa worked here, and then then my dad worked here, and then my son's working here. That's that's pretty cool.
Yeah, no, no one in my family.
No way, really.
No, first.
That's that's okay.
Now my I have two young boys.
Uh huh.
I took them through safely. No, there was no
sure.
Unfortunately, wasn't as cool for them because there was no METAL being poured. But they have said someday when I grow up, this is what I want to do.

I mean, it's you're
eerie. It it is cooler, and you have you have one of those mugs, and it was so funny because we were pouring that, and I yeah I didn't know what was being pulled.
I'm not I'm not done with it, so it doesn't look its best. I need to finish shining
it. See, see again. It was it was we were at a point where we were just pouring aluminum. It was just you know, stirring the pot, putting in the ladle, sticking it in the form, then going the next one, and and I got to tell you, I got I have videos now. Oh, I have videos just because it's it's that exciting.
I have so many. I bet
you do.
So many.
So how? Okay, Sam. I'm not going to jump, and then we'll go to the how. We need a little background on who Kayla is. Give us a background.
Kayla is someone who I haven't had a lot of jobs because I like to stay where I'm at.
Sure, sure.
But I tend to jump industries.
Yeah. So
I went from food industry, whether that was service like serving or yeah, went from part-time delivery driver to a GM at Jimmy John's within a year.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Switched careers, went to car industry.
Yeah,
started internet sales. Ended up being, you know, a sales associate.
Yeah,
that was great. Great money. If I was like a single person, it would have been perfect. I just didn't have time for yeah. And so I was. I was doing what everyone does when they're looking for a job. Yeah.
Yeah.
LinkedIn said, or yeah, no, indeed. Hey, with your background, you might be a good fit for this position, and it was inside sales and procurement specialist for Erie Bronze.
Yes,
was reading through the qualifications, and I didn't know anything. I had no idea, even necessarily, what they did until I got there. Yeah, I did my research. I looked online and did that, but one thing I knew was I'm a quick learner. I like to learn. I am fascinated by how things are built. Like growing up, I would always watch those. How is it made? How is it made? It's just one right after another. I still do, and then it's like three hours later, and like I don't know how I got here.
Yeah, yeah.
But I didn't. I applied, interview, and went from there. The rest is
history.
Yeah, and then
three years later.
Three years later, still with Erie Bronze.
Do you see a career path? Do you see opportunity there? Just a career path, just because, I mean, you're making stuff. You're doing things.
Yes. So, I don't know if you interviewed Bradley.
I did right there. He was the first one out of the gate.
So they they hired me to fill his role.
Yeah.
With some other things, but largely to cover for when he retired from there. So full of so much knowledge, which was absolutely awesome because I can still give him a call, email, whatever, with any question. Yeah, he is
an open book,
so he's a genius when it comes to this stuff. But as for manufacture, he said the first day of this boot camp was, "You don't choose manufacturing; manufacturing chooses you.
Yeah,
and that's exactly what happened. I don't think I'll ever leave the manufacturing industry. Now, maybe my
roles-well, yeah, absolutely-changing
evolve and go for. But there's, I learn something new every single day.
It never stops.
Never.
Are you a part of the program right now, or are you? Why are you here with METAL? Have you already taken it before, and you're just doing it again? This
is no. This is my first time, so I am a part of the American Foundry Society (AFS) Yeah, I've taken like they have classes that you can take through them, like online. I've taken aluminum METALlurgy, aluminum METAL casting, but it wasn't hands-on. I'm I'm a hands-on kind of kind of gal.
Yeah,
I need to do it.
Yeah, to
know it.
That's come on. You know as well as I do. That's pretty typical of of very mechanical individuals. They they yeah. There's the the necessity to to do the book stuff. Got it. Have to happen. I just I get it. I understand all that. But when you start to combine it with with that action and and real life stuff like we did yesterday, and it just cements
it. Yeah, pieces it all together.
It does.
But that's why. So I took the Dr. Paul Lynch.
Yeah,
and Brad both told me about this. They were like, "You need to take it. Of course, I was like, "Well, how much? Yeah, like right off the bat. How much does that get? And they're like, "It's free. And I go, "Oh, okay, absolutely. Get out of my way. I'm there. So I was fortunate enough to be able to take the time off work
to
do this because even with all the courses that I've taken and what I do at Erie Bronze. I'm not necessarily like the front lines. Like I'm not melting or pouring. I'm not even
no
in like engineering. I'm everything else after the fact. I source all the material, so I do all the purchasing and
we're going to talk a little bit about that. But go ahead, continue. So
this class was able to give me the opportunity to fill that gap. So I do the beginning, get all the material, and make sure they have what they need, and then after it's made, I handle like the logistics and.
Yeah,
paperwork side. So this was able to give me that.
Yeah, you got that middle section. Speaking of, this is always an interesting part of manufacturing that I, I, that I believe is truly dynamic. Okay, you got the manufacturing side. You're you're building that product. Got it. You've got the process, and you saw it yesterday at Erie Bronze. Is that okay? There's a process. You do it all the time. It's it's it's just necessary. But what is always that whole cost component that that wild that wild side is the sourcing of these products and figuring out how to bring them in, procuring it at the right price or whatever. Just it's it's just how did you get up to speed with that dynamic? I mean, it's it's a dynamic business.
I have been very fortunate to have people like Brad,
yeah.
He was doing it for years, so he just does it
in his sleep,
without even thinking. Yeah, which sometimes did make it hard because then I would be like, "But why?
Yeah,
and I mean, he. It's just, I don't. It's hard to take 10 steps back sometime to explain, but I mean I've fully took over. Been doing that part. I do the weekly alloy pricing, and so every single week, based off of LME and Comex, I know where we should be quoting our customers, but also have an idea if I need to source the material where they'll be around.
Yeah, and
then I mean it's never to the exact like penny, but if they're way out, it gives me ammo to be him and get to
here. You have various sources. Like it's like okay, I've got A, B, C, D, whatever, and and I trust them. Whatever the whatever the criteria is, do you ever consider looking at other sources of supply to satisfy that need. So
there are times where we need ingot, whatever alloy, that specific ingot, especially when it comes to like defense or military.
Yeah. Oh, yeah. Can I imagine? Because
the more you remelt, the more it can like pick up other trace elements from previous, or it's just
interesting.
Not the same. So somewhere you have to use ingot.
Yeah,
that that's it. There's two ingot makers in the U.S.
No, see, that's that's amazing. I didn't know that.
So if you go to a foundry and you see ingot, you can guarantee you will see one or both.
tical thing. If you only have:Two. Thankfully, I mean, who I've talked with, wonderful guys.
When you go to the ingots, you're saying, "Hey, I need an ingot. I got a special project. It's whatever the reason. I got to get an ingot. Can you have that conversation with the with the the manufacturing of the ingots that it has to be a specific alloy with this recipe, you know, this and this and this, and they'll do it.
Yes.
Do what's sort of like the lead time on that? If you, if I mean,
if it's a popular one, like the bronze that we poured yesterday for the medallions.
Yes.
The aluminum bronze. It's a pretty popular one, so they might already have that made, and it's just there. It's
on inventory.
Yeah, so they can likely ship within one to two days. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Get it in three to five.
Right.
If it's something they have to melt, that could be maybe like an extra week.
That's it.
Their furnaces are huge, huge.
See that? That would be a cool tour.
They both of them have said if I'm ever. In the area, they will absolutely give a tour.
Yeah,
one's Chicago. Yeah, other I want to say Cincinnati.
Yeah, that makes sense. This whole area,
Bedford, Ohio, wherever that may be.
So you're you're dealing this. This is sort of interesting. You're you're in the the procurement side, and the reason I'm focused on that because that's where there's a lot of pricing volatility or pressure because you eventually have to somebody comes to you and say hey Erie Bronze I want this whatever that is and and I need this is sort of the specs this is sort of what it is and you need to go in there and you need to be able to quote it in such a way that makes sense right that that you don't lose out, and because there's just so much, there's so much. That's why this is so important.
Yeah.
Do you do you do you just do you get concerned about that risk, or do you have enough information to know exactly what the these these this feedstock and the costs and when and where and how and all of the components?
My biggest concern is cost. Yeah. right now. It's
volatile.
he cost of tin would was like:Yeah.
So by the time you buy it, because there's always an adder, because you know that person needs to. I mean, it would be over 20-$7 a pound. So when you have it being that high, and a lot of buyers, so like a customer for us, like they need the material. They don't necessarily. They likely don't know what's happening.
No.
What the raw materials? No. I didn't.
Yeah.
Until I had to, because it's an out of sight, out of mind. But you do. You have to have some time uncomfortable conversations with that buyer and explain. I mean, this time last year, tin was $13 a pound.
Yeah,
it's doubled.
Yeah,
doubled. That is a huge driver, especially. I do oversee the aluminum process, which you and I kind of talked about yesterday.
Yeah,
the specific alloy that we do the most is 850 aluminum. It's strong. It's got good machinability. It's a lot used for like bearings,
right, right, and like
housings and stuff like that. That is, gosh, almost $6 a pound. Yeah, right now when it was half of that, because of the tin.
You're dealing in the world of energy too, right? You've got the material. The material that material has to come from some place. That has to be mined. That has to be that has to be brought from some place, and then it's all energy related. It's it's just energy, energy, energy, and the compounding associated with that energies, and and and then you deal with that energy, right? You got to melt this stuff. You got to get it in. It comes on in. You got to melt it. It's energy, and that price has gone through the roof. That's that's that's and it's dynamic, and it's and it changes all the time.
It's disgusting.
And and of course, I and I and I get the the customers in a point where they they but they've got to be educated. It it doesn't magically just show up and and get melted. There's there are a lot of a lot of touches. Unfortunately, because we do. I mean, we obviously get the ingot, but we have to have raw material too in case we have to, you know.
Yeah.
Spice spice up, add some, you know, stuff to whatever.
Right.
So I mean, we do. I mean, I have to buy copper, aluminum. titanium, tin, silicon. So here, here,
here's a funny story. So copper. This was when when I was a lineman in California, and we were what we were doing. We were we were reconducting, or we were bringing down old lines because a new line was coming in. So we had to we have to pull that stuff out of the air. So it it's fluorite copper. So the cable is copper, good copper, right? And and at that time copper had a good price. I don't I don't remember what it was, but at the time it was it was pretty premium. Well, here we are pulling it out of the air, and then we we. We stick it on what we call the cat head and roll it up, bind it, stick it on the ground, go to the next one, roll it up. It just becomes real manual. But there it is, copper all rolled up, heavy right there, right. So we're working all day, and now we're ready to pick up all the the spools, and we're coming back, and we see this car. This car's just loaded down on the back, scraping the back, and it's trying to get out of the dirt, right? And and of course we pull up and go, hey, which what do you got there? And they just pulled up and grabbed as many spool as they could possibly get

finders. Yeah, we pulled it. We pulled it out. We we we grabbed it. But when when things like that happen, when people people intuitively know that there's the prices, and then you get some really weird behavior. But that's that's exactly right. Copper's expensive. Yeah,
and you need it with. with some of those raw materials, we'll so we'll buy it as like the scrap form. Like we buy copper wire that's been briquetted.
Yeah,
and that's the copper we use, or we'll use the cables and wires that have been chopped up.
Yep, yep.
And we'll do that. None of that stuff is, you know, domestic. None of it.
No, no way.
So like, I'll buy the. Well, I
didn't know that.
So I was talking to one of my scrap contacts that we do work with, and I mean they're international, great people. Same with ingot makers. Yeah, there's two.
Right.
Foundries use the same two because that's what it is. Scrappers for the refineries, so like all the stuff they buy, have to go somewhere for it to be processed. Similar situation. There's like three.
So for for clarification, so I'm a scrapper, and I grab all this scrap. I mean, they're everywhere. There's scrap, and you're going to have to figure out how to process and get it out and get to the the material that is necessary. You're not just going to throw it in a landfill. You need to scrap it. So I'm a scrapper, but I still have to send it to some place for the final, you know, whatever product,
and there's like three, give or take. I not 100 but obviously I don't deal with the refinery aspect. Sure, sure, but there
is very
very minimal. All, but you're dealing
internationally too, right?
It's all international.
It's all international. Even the refineries are international. Yes, they're not local. When I say stateside,
for some reason I want to say Germany.
Yeah,
is a big one.
Huh?
Um, maybe Portugal.
Oh, see. See, that's that's a permanent. It doesn't matter. I know. I do know one is
likely German.
Yeah,
but yeah, there's similar situation with the ingot. I mean, there's only so many places. Wow. So at the end of the day, all of these scrappers are likely sending their stuff to be processed at the same refineries.
See, all I can think about is cost. You know, that's it. I'm scrapping. I'm pulling in. I'm grabbing all this. You know, recycled material. I'm doing my separation. Here's copper. Here's aluminum. Here's whatever that is. I you know I'm going to do everything. Now I've got to put it on something, ship it to it. Cost, cost, cost, cost, cost. They got to do their thing. Cost, cost, cost, cost, cost, and then you got to bring it. They ship it back,
or do they? Or does it get stuck overseas and we lose?
Really?
Not. I don't think all of it makes it back.
See,
especially when you got China over there.
That's amazing. That's amazing.
China's using our products at the end of the day, at least when it comes to materials.
So we're sending not
all of it, but I mean, yeah. For that refinery, I mean, I don't understand how all of that works. But from my understanding, I mean, like these scrappers are like, hey, we want this to be processed out. We want that back. That refinery. Might be able to sell that byproduct remaining. It would be much cheaper. I mean, see,
I didn't know that. I didn't know that. And and I would imagine as a scrapper, boy, do I are we digging deep in this one. As a scrapper, I'm sitting there and I want the most for my. I'm trying. Yeah. I I've got price pressures. I've got a desire to to improve my margins. So I'm going to constantly be in hypersensitive on what's taking place and what that is. But because I have only three around the world or whatever it is, I'm still somewhat captive in my ability to be able to negotiate a price that makes sense, and then the refiner can cut some, make another deal, bring it. That's it.
Yeah,
I'm. I'm overwhelmed though.
Oh, see,
you have to deal with that. Not me. You have to.
I have gone down a lot of rabbit holes.
Yes,
and I would. I mean, if I am wrong with some of the refinery, I hope someone maybe will be like, "Hey, maybe you're on track or some, because usually when it leaves, we get paid, you know, and we sell our scrap. It is what it is, but I don't. Yeah, from what I have picked up, when it gets to a refinery, I don't think all of it will come back. So, like, like some of like say I send like a I sell I don't a mix mix bronze,
yeah,
whatever to Scrapper. Scrapper buys that, sends it to refinery, says, "Hey, I want the copper out of that.
Yes,
refinery will do refinery things,
magic.
Send the copper back, but then what happens
to the other elements?
Yeah.
See,
I don't. I've I've gone down so many rabbit holes.
Yeah, I can only imagine. I can only imagine. All right, one last question because I want to make sure that we get that. Where do you want to go? What you're in this position? You're dealing in the nuts and bolts. You're in the trenches. You're doing what is amazing work. What's that career path look like for you?
I want to obviously take it further. I don't know exactly which branch I want to take? Yeah,
yeah.
But with, I mean, you said the Erie bronze isn't very big, so with that, I mean, quite a few people wear very many hats.
Yeah, and the advantage to
that is, I learn a little bit of everything, but then I can kind of figure out what I like and what maybe I just don't want to do again.
Yeah,
still figuring that out. But one of the things, and I mean, but there's only one other girl in this camp with me.
Yes. Yeah.
And she's so young. I think
she's a pup,
so yeah. Yeah, she's like. I think she might be a junior, upcoming junior, maybe young thing, and it's. I'm trying to. I think I've told her maybe five times. Like we need more women.
You do.
We need more women in here, even if it's just. I mean, everyone does what they do, but I feel, and actually, one of the workers from Keystone Foundry when we were there, yeah,
he stopped Stella and I and said, you know, just want to say this is great. Like this is the I don't know how many groups have gone through there, but you guys, there's been less than a handful.
Yeah. No, it's
of women. Yeah. I just want to say it's very great that to see you guys.
Yeah.

And there's just something with women's like natural, not everyone, attention to detail, organization. Yeah, more places need that.

The gentleman that I was talking to at that Keystone goes, no, you're absolutely right. All of our women, like our whole quality team is women,
yeah,
because of their organization, their attention to detail. He goes, there needs to be more,
yeah. See, in this world of of trying to find people, because every conversation I have invariably goes down the road of saying. Hey, what's the biggest problem? I'm trying to find people, right? There's a market out there. There's opportunity out there, but I can't find trained individuals. I can't find skilled individuals. Blah blah blah. The same same stuff. It's programs like METAL and others that are, I believe, they're obligated to be able to inspire that next generation, and that includes women. And if you if you're trying, if you're having a hard time finding a bunch of people, you're going to have to include women in that equation to be able to sort of bring them on by. No, am I saying that a woman's going to have to pick up a fricking ingan? No, they're not going to do that. But
we can't.
It's it's it's just has to happen.
